Anything but new, the Victaulic method of pipe-joining has been around for a long time. Armed with myriad type approvals from most IACS groups, Victaulic’s output will no doubt (and soon) form a part of your marine equipment for a long time to come. The conservative and staid domestic waterfront, especially where it intersects boatbuilding and repair, recently set sail for increased efficiencies, driven in part by emerging technologies, but also through improved management and new assembly techniques. Bollinger Shipyards Announces New Leadership

Lockport, La.-based Bollinger Shipyards announced that Ben Bordelon will assume the duties of chairman, president and chief executive officer of the company. Ben Bordelon, along with the Chouest family from Galliano, La., has acquired all assets and stock of Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. Bordelon has served in many capacities during his career at Bollinger, and has been a member of the board of directors since 2002. Bollinger to Build 6 More FRCs for the USCG

Bollinger Shipyards, Inc., Lockport, Louisiana, announced the award of six additional USCG Sentinel Class Fast Response Cutters (FRCs). The U. S. Coast Guard (USCG) awarded a $255 million contract option to Bollinger Shipyards of Lockport, La., July 23, 2014 for the production of six more Sentinel-Class FRCs, bringing the total number of FRCs under contract with Bollinger to 30, with a current contract value of $1.4 billion. The FRCs acquired under this contract option are scheduled to be delivered in 2017 and will be homeported at various bases throughout the U.S.

Bollinger Delivers 10th FRC to the USCG

Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. has delivered the Raymond Evans, the 10th Fast Response Cutter (FRC) to the United States Coast Guard (USCG). The announcement was made by Bollinger President, Chris Bollinger: “We are extremely proud to announce the delivery of the Raymond Evans, the latest FRC built by Bollinger, to the 7th Coast Guard District in Key West, Fla. The Raymond Evans, as well as the previous nine FRC deliveries, were proudly delivered on time and on budget. The 154 foot patrol craft Raymond Evans is the tenth vessel in the Coast Guard's Sentinel-class FRC program.

The OPC Sweepstakes: Three for the Money

In February, the U.S. Coast Guard chose three finalists to design its new Offshore Patrol Cutters, with awards to Bollinger Shipyards in Lockport, La., Eastern Shipbuilding Group in Panama City, Fla. and General Dynamics’ Bath Iron Works in Maine. Each company was awarded a Phase I design contract valued at between $21 million and $22 million. At the end of the 18-month Preliminary and Contract Design Phase I, the Coast Guard will choose one company’s team for a Phase II Detailed Design and Construction contract for the lead OPC.

Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. has delivered the Kathleen Moore, the ninth Fast Response Cutter (FRC) to the United States Coast Guard. Bollinger President, Chris Bollinger announced the successful delivery of the USCGC Kathleen Moore to the 7th Coast Guard District in Key West, Fla., stating, “We are very pleased with the latest delivery of this high quality Fast Response Cutter built by the Bollinger team. Once again, this is another successful FRC delivery that is on schedule and on budget.

On Patrol with the U.S. Coast Guard

Building programs continue, spanning the full range of missions, despite budget concerns. Amidst all the talk of Beltway budget cutbacks and sequestration, the U.S. Coast Guard is quietly investing approximately $30 billion in major acquisition projects to modernize its physical assets. The process of recapitalizing these older and difficult-to-maintain assets has never been an easy task, and the Coast Guard has seen its share of bumps along the way. For example, the initially messy Deepwater debacle initially kicked off what has evolved into today’s more successful recapitalization process, now run by the Coast Guard’s Acquisition Directorate, which stood up in July 2007.

Bollinger Advances in $10 Billion OPC Program

Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. was notified yesterday by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) that Bollinger is one of three companies selected for award of Phase I for the Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC) program. Chris Bollinger, President of Bollinger Shipyards provided remarks today after receiving this notification. U.S. Court Case against Bollinger Dismissed

The United States filed a complaint against Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. in July 2011 based on allegations that "Bollinger knowingly misled the Coast Guard to enter into a contract for the lengthening of Coast Guard cutters by falsifying data relating to the structural strength of the converted vessels." Bollinger Shipyards has delivered the 'Margaret Norvell', the fifth Fast Response Cutter (FRC) to the United States Coast Guard. The 154 foot patrol craft 'Margaret Norvell' is the fifth vessel in the Coast Guard's Sentinel-class FRC program. To build the FRC, Bollinger Shipyards used a proven, in-service parent craft design based on the Damen Stan Patrol Boat 4708. It has a flank speed of 28 knots, state of the art command, control, communications and computer technology, and a stern launch system for the vessels 26 foot cutter boat.

Guarded Optimism for 2013 from U.S. Gulf Boatbuilders

Caveats and some doubts remain. Marine companies along the Gulf of Mexico will be busy in 2013 producing offshore vessels to meet expected growth in the region’s deepwater drilling sector over the next several years. Vessel repairs will be active too. Worker training will be stepped up to address a skilled labor shortage. And nearly three years after BP’s spill off coastal Louisiana, safety will remain a priority. But with the nation teetering on a fiscal cliff – which may spur tax increases and government spending cuts – demand for official and military vessels could be affected…

Crowley & Jensen Maritime Win IWS 2012 Boat Awards

The companies were honored with two significant awards at the recent International Workboat Show (IWS) in New Orleans. Together Crowley Maritime Corp. and subsidiary Jensen Maritime , the company’s Seattle-based naval architecture and marine engineering firm, were honored with two of the top 10 Significant Boat awards during the seventh-annual International Workboat Show 2012. The first award was for the design of two Crowley-owned ocean class tugboats , the Ocean Wind and Ocean Wave. The second was for Jensen-designed Murden, a hopper dredge vessel developed for the U.S.

Bollinger Means Business

Chris Bollinger sets the table for an exciting 2013 & beyond. Maritime Reporter caught up with Chris Bollinger on a recent trip to the Gulf Coast for the October 26, 2012, christening of Bollinger’s latest newbuild; the first two of four tugboats in Crowley Maritime’s ocean class series, Ocean Wave and Ocean Wind.
