Russia’s state-owned nuclear company Rosatom said its floating nuclear power plant has been connected to the grid and has commenced electricity production for the first time in a remote region of Russia.The floating power unit (FPU) Akademik Lomonosov has been connected to the grid, generating electricity for the first time in the isolated Chaun-Bilibino network in Pevek, Chukotka, Russia’s Far East. This happened after the Russian regulator Rostekhnadzor issued an operations permit, as well as permission to connect to the northern electricity grid maintained by Chukotenergo JSC.Rosatom’s Director General Alexey Likhachev said: “After its connection to the grid, Akademik Lomonosov becomes the world’s first nuclear power plant based on SMR-class technology to generate electricity.

German-based power generator MAN Energy Solutions is joining a partnership aimed at expanding hydrogen storage systems based on the Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) technology.MAN has signed on to a cooperative agreement with Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies and Frames Group B.V. Together they will design and build large-scale hydrogen storage systems.Developed by Hydrogenious the LOHC technology uses heat transfer oil as a carrier for hydrogen, thus allowing it to be stored under ambient conditions. This contract includes regeneration of the current Rolls-Royce submarine reactor core manufacturing facility in Derby. The Group will introduce the latest technology and manufacturing techniques to deliver increased efficiencies committed by the MoD and industry as part of the Strategic Defence and Security Review. Rolls-Royce won a second service contract from the Ministry of Defense to ensure the safety and power performance of Royal Navy nuclear submarines, in a deal worth more than $500 million. Under this contract, the company will continue to operate and maintain the Vulcan Naval Reactor Test Establishment site at Dounreay, Scotland, on behalf of the Ministry of Defense, to service and support Royal Navy programs over the next 13 years. This facility tests the operation and performance of the nuclear power plants used to support the UK submarine flotilla. On November 14, Rolls-Royce announced it had won a contract to provide a total powerplant support package, worth about $150 million over the next three years.
