Rolls-Royce Acquires VT Controls

Rolls-Royce has acquired marine electrical systems company VT Controls Ltd for £11 million, continuing its growth strategy in the marine market. VT Controls Ltd, acquired from the VT Group, will be incorporated into the Rolls-Royce Marine Electrical Systems business set up earlier this year. The acquisition is an important addition to the new business's capability, as it ramps up to support marine projects involving major electrical systems. Based in Portsmouth, VT Controls Ltd has provided power or automation systems on all front line UK naval platforms in the last decade and is involved in current naval programmes both in the UK and abroad. The company has an impressive pedigree that stretches as far back as the early 1970s when it supplied controls for Brazil's Mk 10 frigates.

Rolls-Royce Gas Turbine Get Certification

The Rolls-Royce MT30 marine gas turbine has completed a major development milestone, receiving certification from a leading verification agency. The gas turbine has received DNV (Det Norske Veritas) design approval, certifying the engine at 36MW to DNV's rules for classification of High Speed, Light Craft and Naval Surface Vessels. ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) certification test running, which will satisfy all United States Navy requirements, has also been started and will be completed in mid-2004. The MT30 has been selected to power the Integrated Power System (IPS) Engineering Development Model (EDM) for the US Navy's DD(X) multimission destroyer programme. This order marks the company's entry into the US Navy large gas turbine market.

Lockheed Selects Rolls-Royce to Power LCS

Rolls-Royce has been selected by Lockheed Martin to provide MT30 gas turbine engines and waterjets for up to two ships of the Littoral Combat Ship program (LCS), the next generation of US Navy warship. LCS is being designed and built to improve the US Navy's operational capability in the littorals, or coastal waters. Rolls-Royce's selection as the engine and waterjet provider for the Lockheed Martin ships leaves it well positioned for the program. The Lockheed Martin ship design incorporates two Rolls-Royce MT30 marine gas turbines driving four Rolls-Royce high-speed waterjets. The first vessel is due to be launched in December 2006 by Lockheed Martin. General Dynamics will also construct up to two ships for the same class.

Rolls-Royce Wins Submarine Support Contract

Rolls-Royce won a second service contract from the Ministry of Defense to ensure the safety and power performance of Royal Navy nuclear submarines, in a deal worth more than $500 million. Under this contract, the company will continue to operate and maintain the Vulcan Naval Reactor Test Establishment site at Dounreay, Scotland, on behalf of the Ministry of Defense, to service and support Royal Navy programs over the next 13 years. This facility tests the operation and performance of the nuclear power plants used to support the UK submarine flotilla. On November 14, Rolls-Royce announced it had won a contract to provide a total powerplant support package, worth about $150 million over the next three years.

Rolls-Royce Wins $28.2M Contract

Rolls-Royce has won a contract worth approximately $28.2 million to provide propeller shaftlines and other equipment for the first six Royal Navy Type 45 destroyers. Technology derived from commercial marine applications helped Rolls-Royce win the naval marine contract. The company was selected, under competitive tender, by the BAE SYSTEMS Type 45 Prime Contract Office to provide a system of two propeller shaftlines per ship with steering gear and stabilisers. Rolls-Royce’s Trent 30 Turbine Is Latest Innovation

The new Rolls-Royce Marine Trent 30 gas turbine is designed to bring technologically driven Trent aero engine innovation to the cruise industry. Available for service in either mechanical or electrical genset applications for both commercial and naval markets, the Trent 30 will be available for delivery in 2004. Boasting a power rating of 36 MW and cost effective, the turbine is ideal for cruise liners, fast ferries and LNG vessels. The Trent 30 offers propulsion system designers optimum flexibility as it can replace the need for two turbines, thus saving on space and reducing operating and ownership costs. Measuring 8.9 x 3.5 x 4.3 m, it is lightweight and compact, its total package including enclosure and auxiliaries, weighing less than 26,000 kg.

Rolls-Royce Wins $150M Marine Contracts

Rolls-Royce has won ship design and equipment supply contracts for offshore service and cable-laying vessels, worth approximately $150 million over the last three months, including its biggest-ever commercial marine order. Dr. Saul Lanyado, President -- Marine, Rolls-Royce, said: "This is a significant step for Rolls-Royce. Development of the marine business is key to the future strategy of the group. These orders demonstrate a growing demand for specialist offshore vessels. The largest single order ever won by the commercial marine business of Rolls-Royce is from Aker Brattvaag, supplying ship designs and equipment for seven offshore service vessels, worth 33 million pounds.

The responsibility of melding, developing and profitably leading one of the world's most prolific high-technology marine companies is, to say the least, a daunting task. Assuming the post with no marine industry experience would seemingly make the job all the more difficult. But Dr. Saul Lanyado enters his position as the new president of the Rolls-Royce Marine division armed with years of engineering and business success and savvy. Maritime Reporter recently sat with Dr. Lanyado in his Buckingham Gate, London office to discuss the company's current endeavors and future developments. At the outset of a discussion regarding Rolls-Royce's marine business, it is immediately evident the direction in which one of the world's new leading players in marine propulsion is heading.

Rolls-Royce MT30 Achieves US Navy Milestone

The Rolls-Royce MT30 has achieved a major development milestone -- receiving American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) certification, a US Navy requirement for operation. The 36MW marine gas turbine is already well positioned for two US Navy programs, having been selected for the Lockheed Martin Flight 0 Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) and the DD(X) multi-mission destroyer Engineering Demonstrator Model (EDM). The MT30 is also included in the baseline design for the two proposed Royal Navy aircraft carriers and is being actively considered for the French PA2 Aircraft Carrier and the Franco-Italian FREMM frigate program. Rolls Royce Factory to Serve Equipment to Yards

Rolls Royce has opened a new factory in Shanghai, China, to serve the world’s largest commercial shipbuilding market. Together with an existing facility in Korea, the factory forms a new production hub for north-east Asia enabling the company to supply shipyards with marine equipment at the point of manufacture – and open up new markets in the process. The Asian shipbuilding market is currently worth £19 billion annually and accounts for around 80 percent of all global construction. In 2004 new orders and deliveries reached record levels. Marine President Saul Lanyado, who officially opened the site yesterday, said: “This is a very exciting development for us and it opens up real opportunities to expand our business in Asia.

Izar And Rolls-Royce Plan High Speed Cargo Vessel

Spanish shipbuilder and designer IZAR and Rolls-Royce announced plans for a new European High Speed Cargo Vessel which is intended to be a cost-effective short-sea shipping alternative to road transport in Europe. The monohull EHSCV is powered by two Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbines and Rolls-Royce Kamewa waterjets. The baseline design enables 124 trailers to be carried at a service speed of 37 knots and is intended to be economically competitive with road transport on routes above 300 nautical miles. The design meets the needs of ship owners wishing to develop fleet plans in line with the European Union's Marco Polo program, which is designed to give financial support to projects which improve the environmental performance of Europe's freight transport system.

Rolls-Royce to Power Demonstrator for DD(X)

Japanese TSL a Reality

Long discussed as the embodiment of next-generation marine technology, the Japanese "Techno-Superliner" (TSL) is now a reality. The 14,500 grt TSL will be built from aluminum and measure 460 x 98 ft. (140 x 29.8 m). To be built by Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding's Tamano works for delivery in 2005, the TSL will be propelled to a service speed of 38 knots via a pair of Rolls-Royce Kamewa VLW J235 waterjets, which will absorb 27 MW of power. The ship will carry 700 passengers and cargo along the 1,000 km route between Tokyo and Ogasawara Islands, with its speed helping to cut the journey time from 26 to 16 hours. "This contract is another example of our technological excellence providing our customers with a competitive edge," said Saul Lanyado, Rolls-Royce president - marine.

Rolls-Royce to Supply Podded Propulsion, Deck Machinery for QM2

Rolls-Royce has won two new contracts to supply podded propulsion systems and deck machinery for Queen Mary 2, the new luxury cruise liner to be built for Cunard Line at Alstom Chantiers de l'Atlantique in France. It has also won contracts to supply podded propulsors to three other cruise ships. The total value of these contracts is approximately $21.2 million. Dr. Saul Lanyado, president - Marine for Rolls-Royce, said: "These contracts bring the total value of equipment orders we have won in Commercial Marine so far this year to more than $241.1 million. They are also another illustration of the wide range of products we are able to offer to the cruise and ferry industry. Rolls-Royce will supply four Mermaid podded propulsion systems for Queen Mary 2, the largest ocean liner ever built.

Acquisition Expands Rolls-Royce's Marine Capability

Rolls-Royce plc, has further expanded its capabilities with the acquisition of German company INTERING GmbH for an undisclosed sum. Rolls-Royce is now the only company able to offer tank stabilizers, through he INTERING purchase, and fin stabilizers, separately or as a combined package. Hamburg-based INTERING was formed in 1969 and employs 30 people. Its products are in service with more than 600 ships and its sales last year were $4.1 million.
