Maritime Education: A Transfer of Experience

Aigua Sea School Expands Simulator Capacity

Sea School Unveils New NAUTIS Bridge Simulator

Sea School Mobile, part of Ocean and Coastwise Educational Services Inc. family,  located in Bayou La Batre, Ala. has just acquired a NAUTIS  Full Mission Bridge Simulator and Instructor Station to enhance the training curriculum for its maritime students. The NAUTIS simulator is being installed by VSTEP and its U.S partner, Annapolis Simulation. Sea School’s new DNV Class B certified NAUTIS Full-Mission Bridge Simulator features a 180° external view angle, which exceeds the minimum 120° exterior view angle required for DNV Class B simulators.

The Aigua Sea School in Mallorca purchased multiple NAUTIS Desktop Trainers to provide advanced simulator training for its students. The NAUTIS Desktop Trainers were delivered and installed by VSTEP at the Aigua headquarters in Palma. A Regulatory Seascape

Regulation shapes the workboat industry perhaps more than any other single factor. This regulatory seascape includes a myriad of onerous and ever-changing rules. A ‘SITREP’ on those choppy waters is therefore in order. Last December, the Coast Guard closed the public comment period following its Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) requiring nearly all towing vessels to obtain Certificates of Inspection under Subchapter M of CFR 46. The Coast Guard’s Towing Vessel National Center of Expertise (NCE) estimates that there are 5,800 U.S.

Wells Joins OMSA as VP

The Offshore Marine Service Association (OMSA) is pleased to announce the hiring of Richard Wells as Vice President. Mr. Wells brings to OMSA a wealth of experience in maritime safety, mariner licensing and training and regulatory compliance. Most recently, Wells served as supervisor of the U.S. Coast Guard’s in   He was responsible for rebuilding the center after it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, and then ensuring a smooth transition when the Coast Guard’s licensing function was reorganized. Prior to that, he was a senior instructor at the Sea School in Mobile, AL, where he was instrumental in helping mariners meet new Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) training requirements.

Duramax Marine, a world leader in water-lubricated rubber bearings, recently broke ground on a new facility that will streamline the company's current manufacturing operations. The facility, with approximately 65,000 sq. ft. of factory and office space will consolidate production and administration into one centralized location in Troy Township, Ohio, approximately 40 miles south east of Cleveland. The expected grand opening will be the first quarter of 2001. Watson Coatings Inc. said that Gordon Watson, founder and CEO, retired on Nov. 2, 2000. Sea School Lifeboatman Course Includes Hands-On Practical
