Marine Towing of Tampa Acquires Seabulk Towing Assets from Bisso

Marine Towing of Tampa announced it is expanding its ship assist services to Florida's east coast following a deal with E.N. Gladding-Hearn Delivers Refitted Launch to Tampa Bay Pilots

The Tampa Bay pilot association has taken delivery of Tampa, a newly refitted Chesapeake Class pilot boat built by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding in 2003, when the Somerset, Mass. shipyard introduced the class of mid-size, high-speed launches. Long-serving Pilot Boat Returns to Gladding-Hearn for Repowering

The Tampa Bay pilot association has returned its first Chesapeake Class pilot boat to Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding. Tampa was built in 2003 when the shipyard introduced the class of mid-size, high-speed launches. In 2015, the Tampa pilots took delivery of the shipyard’s first Chesapeake Class MKII, which incorporates the performance benefits of Volvo Penta’s IPS 2 pod system. With more than 50,000 operating hours, the 53’ all-aluminum pilot boat will be repowered and undergo repairs after a thorough inspection by the shipyard’s quality control department.

Hallucinating Man Medevaced from US Navy Ship

Box Ship Rescues Sailors in Storm Sally

Sensor Systems Improve Marine Navigation Near US Naval Bases

Maritime navigational safety near two U.S. Navy installations in Kings Bay, Ga., and Portsmouth, N.H. has been improved thanks to new Physical Oceanographic Real-Time Systems, also known as PORTS, installed by NOAA and the U.S. Navy. They are the first new PORTS in two years, and the 34th and 35th in the nationwide network.The system near Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, the East Coast home to America’s Ohio-class submarines, is an integrated series of sensors which will provide critical real-time information on oceanographic and meteorological conditions.

PPP Investment in Port Tampa Bay

Port Tampa Bay approved a public-private partnership (PPP) agreement with four other entities to divvy up who will pay for a $60 million widening and extension of the Big Bend Channel. The strategic partners include the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Tampa Electric Co. and Mosaic Co., a global fertilizer company which is one of port's largest tenants along with Tampa Electric. The port's board of commissioners unanimously approved the participation agreement at a monthly meeting on Tuesday. The Big Bend Channel connects to the Tampa Harbor main channel and will be deepened from 34 feet to 43 feet and widened from 200 feet to 250 feet to accommodate larger ships.

Cross-Bay Ferry Again Posts Record Ridership

In St. Petersburg and Tampa, Florida, the fledglng trial of the Cross-Bay Ferry carried nearly 8,000 passengers during March and generated significant growth in ridership for both weekday and weekend service between Tampa and St. Petersburg. During March, the Cross-Bay Ferry sold a record 7,990 tickets, which was a 31-percent increase over February, which was also a record month. The 6-month pilot project has now carried 31,362 people as of March 31. Weekend ridership in March increased 17 percent over February, and weekday ridership increased 57 percent. The final run of the ferry pilot project will be on Sunday, April 30. The project began last November as a real-life test of the feasibility and desire of the community for regular water transit.

Cross-Bay Ferry Reports Ridership Gains

The Cross-Bay Ferry carried a record 6,000-plus paying passengers in February, and experienced significant ridership growth in February for both weekday and weekend service between Tampa and St. Petersburg. During February, Cross Bay Ferry sold 6,070 tickets, a 57-percent rise from January, and a record for the 6-month test. The ferry has now carried nearly 23,000 people since the pilot project began. Weekday (Mon.-Thurs.) ticket sales grew 80-percent to 2,237, and weekend (Fri./Sat./Sun.) ticket sales grew 46-percent to 3,833.
