MARAD Designates Four New Marine Highway Projects

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) today announced the immediate designation of four new Marine Highway Projects as part of the America’s Marine Highway Program (AMHP). Projects in North Carolina, Alaska, and Puerto Rico will receive these designations. They can now apply for record levels of funding through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to help address supply chain challenges.A Marine Highway Project is a planned service, or expansion of an existing service, on a designated Marine Highway Route.

Hurricane Dorian Update

At 800 AM EDT (1200 UTC), the center of Hurricane Dorian was located near latitude 29.5 North, longitude 79.6 West.Dorian is moving toward the north-northwest near 8 mph (13 km/h), and a northwest or north-northwest motion is expected through this morning. A turn toward the north is forecast by this evening, followed by a turn toward the north-northeast on Thursday morning.On this track, the core of Hurricane Dorian will move dangerously close to the Florida east coast and the Georgia coast through tonight.

Sick Crew Member Airlifted Off Crowley Tankship

The Coast Guard informs it has medevaced a 54-year-old crewmember from the Crowley Maritime's US-flagged motor tanker 'Pennsylvania' approximately 20 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C. The master of the 576-foot Pennsylvania notified Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watchstanders that a crewmember was suffering from chest pain and needed medical attention. Sector watchstanders launched a crew aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., to assist.

Cruise Passenger Medevaced off N.C. Coast

The U.S. Coast Guard medevaced a 35-year-old man Tuesday from a cruise ship approximately 180 miles east of Nags Head, N.C. The captain of the 965-foot cruise ship Norwegian Gem notified watchstanders at the Fifth District Command Center at 2:21 p.m. stating a passenger was in medical distress. Coast Guard watchstanders launched crews aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and an HC-130 Hercules from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., to assist. The helicopter crew arrived on scene at approximately 5 p.m., hoisted the passenger and took him back to the air station.

1864 - LT William Cushing, USN, sinks Confederate ram Albemarle with a spar torpedo attached to the bow of his launch. 1922 - Navy League of U.S. sponsors first annual celebration of Navy Day to focus public attention on the importance of the U.S. Navy. That date was selected because it was Theodore Roosevelt's birthday. 1943 - First women Marines report for duty on West Coast, Camp Pendleton. 1944 - Fast Carrier Task Forces attack Japanese shipping and installations in Visayas and northern Luzon. 1967 - Operation Coronado VIII begins in Rung Sat Zone. Spirit of Nantucket Cruise Ship Re-Floated

The 207-foot cruise ship Spirit of Nantucket which went aground in the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) in Virginia Beach, Va., has been re-floated and is being escorted by the Coast Guard and the Virginia Beach Police Department to the Colonna's Shipyard in Norfolk, Va. The Army Corps of Engineers located a submerged object approximately eight-feet below surface. The object is marked and will be removed. The Coast Guard is enforcing safety zone between the Great Bridge Albemarle Sound Light 25 (LLNR 37330) and the Great Bridge Albemarle Sound Light 27 (LLNR 37335). This area of the ICW is closed to all commercial vessel traffic. The area is also closed to recreational boats that have a draft of more than six-feet. There is no additional pollution associated with the grounding of the vessel.

Sea Tow Services International Continues U.S. Expansion

Sea Tow Services International, Inc. has expanded the company’s franchise program into seven new regions, one of which extends Sea Tow’s footprint into the state of Michigan. Three of the areas are also in lake regions, which remain important geographical targets for Sea Tow. The new Sea Tow Services coverage areas include Lake Erie (OH), Eastern Lake Michigan (MI), Lake George (NY), Trenton/Severn (Ontario), Solomons (MD) and Lake Gaston and Albemarle Sound (both in NC). “This is the second major expansion announcement for Sea Tow this year,” explains Captain Tim Wilson, National Corporate Representative for Sea Tow Services International.
