Navies operate on a spectrum between deterrence and defense, to include offensive operation, support of foreign policy, and power projection to civil affair and humanitarian assistance and disaster response. Many have constabulary responsibilities, and it could be argued that, with the exception of the largest navies, most are more like a coast guard than a military force in their normal responsibilities.Every Navy is different. Bulk Carrier Rescues Fishermen off Peru

The commercial bulk carrier Global Vega rescued seven fishermen in distress on May 21 off the coast of Peru. While Global Vega was sailing from the port of Acajutla, El Salvador, to the port of Callao, Peru, the vessel came upon a fishing boat having engine trouble. Food and fresh water were provided to the fishermen and their boat was moored to Global Vega. Afterward, the fishermen and their boat were safely delivered to the Peruvian Coast Guard. Global Vega is a bulk carrier operated by NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of NYK Line. Captain: Arturo F.

Markets:Eyes and Ears on the Water

Since the 9/11 attack there has obviously been increased emphasis on getting more eyes, ears and in some cases firepower on America's ports and inland waterways. Homeland security has become a top priority for the U.S. Coast Guard and numerous other Federal, state and local agencies. Patrol boats offer a relatively low cost solution to increasing security on America's waterways and in and around ports. These vessels range from RIB's with outboard motors to aluminum-hulled craft with high horsepower diesel engines enabling them to quickly reach and maintain high speeds often required for interdiction. Fortunately America was building capable patrol boats before 9/11. The mission of these vessels prior to 9/11 was mostly drug interdiction, search and rescue and/or border security.

SeaArk Granted Six Vessel Contract

Aluminum work and patrol boat builder, SeaArk Marine, was granted a contract by the U.S. Navy to construct six 40 ft. (12.1 m) Dauntless Class Patrol Boats. The boats are being bought by the Department of Defense - backing the PERU Riverine Program. The six vessels will be operated in Peru along the Amazon River, as well as other river systems, while the Peruvian Coast Guard will utilize the vessels for patrol and drug interdiction. With delivery scheduled to occur from June through November 2000, each SeaArk will include twin diesel inboard engines, comprehensive electronics package, berthing for four and weapons mounts.

SeaArk Marine Awarded Contract

SeaArk Marine, aluminum work and patrol boat builder, was recently awarded a contract to built six 40 ft. Dauntless Class patrol boats by the U.S. Navy. The SeaArks are being purchased by the Department of Defense, in support of the PERU Riverine Program. The contract will be administered by the Naval Sea System Command. The vessels will be in operation in Peru on the Amazon River and other river systems. The Peruvian Coast Guard will use the boats for patrol and drug interdiction. Each SeaArk will be outfitted with twin diesel inboard engines, extensive electronics package, berthing for four, galley, head with shower and weapons mounts. Delivery is scheduled to begin in June 2000, with the last boat to be delivered in November 2000.
