Bollinger Gretna, L.L.C., Harvey, La., a Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. company, and K-Sea Transportation Corp. of New York have signed a contract for the construction of four double hull, ocean service, OPA ‘90 oil barges. The barges will have capacities of 80,000 to 100,000 barrels. Terms were not disclosed. The barges will be built primarily for oil service on the Northeast U. S. coast. They will be coupled with existing K-Sea tugs using a connection system designed and delivered by Acomarin Engineering. The system will provide increased operating efficiency and will enhance the safety and reliability of the units. The new barges will feature double block cargo segregation, segregated ballast, cargo monitoring and vapor recovery systems as well as advanced electrical and hydraulic systems.

Bollinger Shipyards, Inc., Lockport, La., delivered Seacor Eagle, the first of two 145.5 x 36 x 9.8-ft. supply/utility vessels for Seacor Marine, Inc., Houston, Tex. Seacor Hawk, a nearly identical sister ship, is scheduled for delivery in mid November 2001. "Seacor Eagle is typical of the flexibility and versatility of our 145 ft. supply/utility boat to meet the needs of a variety of operators of large, medium and small fleets," said Walter Berry, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Bollinger. Bollinger Shipyards, Inc., Lockport, La., has delivered DBL101, the first of four Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA’90) double hull, ocean service, oil tank barges to K-Sea Transportation Corp. While the DBL 101 was in the final stages of construction, Bollinger also retrofitted the K-Sea tug TASMAN SEA with a JAK coupler system, creating an ATB unit. Bollinger and K-Sea announced a newbuilding contract in March 2001, for the series of 4 barges with capacities of 80,000 to 100,000 barrels (BBL). Bollinger Marine Fabricators (BMF), Amelia, La., fabricated modules for the new 400-ft. by 74-ft. by 25-ft., 100,000 BBL barge and shipped them to Bollinger Gretna (Harvey, La.) for final assembly and installation of piping and other systems.

Bollinger Shipyards, Inc., Lockport, La., with the Riverway Co., Eden Prairie, Minn., christened the M/V Bootsie B., a 188-ft. (57.3 m), 8,000 hp towboat. Bootsie B. is the first such vessel for the Riverway Co., in 25 years. It was christened by Ms. Mary Sutton Becker, granddaughter of Mrs. Mary Sutton "Bootsie" Baskerville, whose family established Riverway's predecessor company, the Upper Mississippi Towing Corp. in 1937. "This is our first new construction project for Riverway," said Walter Berry, executive vice president and COO of Bollinger said. Bollinger Northshore Engineering designed the vessel, and Corning Townsend, with C.T. Marine, provided naval architectural services for proper water flow through the kort nozzle and across the rudders.

Bollinger’s repair and conversion shipyard at Port Fourchon, La., on the Gulf of Mexico, can now accommodate rigs, ships and boats with drafts to 27 ft., now that dredging is complete from the sea buoys in the Gulf to Bollinger’s Fourchon 350-ft. slip, which has also been deepened. “The deepened waterway and slip permit us to offer services to larger jack-up and matted rigs as well as bigger ships and boats. We also have additional shore power providing electrical power for vessels’ hotel loads as well as additional cherry pickers and forklifts that can lift from 20 to 55 tons," said Walter Berry, executive VP and COO. Bollinger Shipyards, Inc., has promoted and/or assigned new responsibilities to the following members of its management team in order to meet the demands of increased business, new products, expanded services and new technologies according to Donald T. "Boysie" Bollinger, chairman and CEO of the Lockport, La., headquartered shipbuilding and repair company. Mike Ellis has been promoted to executive vice president and chief operating officer of the company. "Mike's leadership ability and strategic vision has afforded him the opportunity to take on additional responsibilities within our organization", said Boysie Bollinger. Ellis joined Bollinger in 1998 as chief financial officer and will now be responsible for the overall operations of the company.
