New Minimum Wage for Seafarers

The world’s seafarers are set to see their monthly minimum wages rise incrementally over the course of the next three years.The change is the result of a a resolution agreed by a subcommittee of the the International Labor Organization's (ILO) Joint Maritime Commission (JMC).The meeting agreed to raise the ILO minimum basic wage for an able seafarer to US$658 as of January 1, 2023. Jensen Designs Tugs for Moran Towing

Seattle-based naval architecture and marine engineering firm Jensen Maritime Consultants (JMC) has been awarded the contract to design ship assist and escort tugboats for Moran Towing, a tug-and-barge operator on the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts.The new boats will be the latest in a series of seven Jensen-designed tugboats for Moran over the past decade, said a press release from JMC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Crowley Maritime Corporation.New features on the tugboats include upgrades to meet the latest ABS regulations and U.S. Coast Guard subchapter M regulations, as well as meeting U.S. EPA Tier IV requirements. ILO Minimum Wage for Seafarers to Stay at $614

The recommended International Labour Organization (ILO) Minimum Wage for Able Seafarers will remain at its current level of US$ 614 basic pay per month until at least 2018. This follows an ILO Joint Maritime Commission (JMC) meeting held in Geneva last week, comprising representatives of maritime employers co-ordinated by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and seafarers’ unions co-ordinated by the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF). ICS, in its role as an official ILO social partner, says that it firmly continues to support the global minimum wage, a concept unique to the international shipping industry. Former ‘Google Barge’ Sold

After concluding two 3,500HP tug sales on December 30, Marcon International Inc. has started 2015 with three ocean barge sales, and hopes to report on several additional sales before the end of this month. Five 4,500-6,000HP tugs, one 5,150BHP AHTS and two 3,200 – 5,500dwt ocean barges continue to be fixed on previously arranged long-term charters. The most recent transaction is the purchase by private U.S. West Coast Buyers of the former “Google barge JMC 262” (ex-BAL0001, CIB 721) from Cashman Equipment Corp.

JMC to Design Fireboats for L.A. Fire Dept.

Jensen Maritime Consultants of Seattle, Washington, has been awarded the contract to design a small fireboat for the Los Angeles Fire Department. Three of these new boats are to replace three existing fiberglass boats that were built in the 60's, and are to be used to enhance the Department's capability for fighting ship and shore-side fires. Each vessel is to be not more than 40-ft. in length, obtain cruising speeds in excess of 25 knots, and have a pumping capacity approaching 2,000 GPM. The boats are to be powered by twin diesel engines, with a third engine powering the fire pump. A three man crew will operate each vessel during typical missions. For larger conflagrations, these boats will operate in tandem with the Department's larger vessels.

Seattle Selects Jensen Maritime to Design Fireboat

JMC will be awarded the contract to develop a complete design and specification for Seattle’s new fireboat. In the 115 years since the “Great Seattle Fire”, the City of Seattle has had just four fireboats built to protect its busy waterfront. The first vessel, SNOQUALMIE, was built in 1891. The DUWAMISH followed in 1909, then the ALKI in 1927, and finally the CHIEF SEATTLE in 1985. The ALKI and CHIEF SEATTLE are still in service, providing fire protection and marine community support functions in Elliott Bay and Lake Union.

Jensen Maritime to Design Seattle Fireboat

In the 115 years since the "Great Seattle Fire", the City of Seattle has had just four fireboats built to protect its busy waterfront. The first vessel, Snoqualmie, was built in 1891. The Duwamish followed in 1909, then the Alki in 1927, and finally the Chief Seattle in 1985. The Alki and Chief Seattle are still in service, providing fire protection and marine community support functions in Elliott Bay and Lake Union. On November 4, 2003, Seattle voters approved construction of a new fireboat to replace the ALKI as part of the nine-year Fire Facilities and Emergency Response Levy. This new vessel will become the City's primary salt water response vessel. Following a preliminary design competition between three Seattle based and one Vancouver, B.C.

New Fireboats for Seattle

In 2004, Jensen Maritime Consultants (JMC) partnered with the City of Seattle’s Fire Department to develop two vessels that will significantly upgrade the City’s marine fire fighting ability, as well as provide a mobile marine command vessel for operations in all manner of catastrophes, including bio-terrorist incidents. Seattle is a city that is almost surrounded by water – built between Elliot Bay, Lake Washington and Lake Union, it has innumerable rivers cutting through it, with more than 190 miles of navigable coastline. However, any vessels going from the salt water side of Puget Sound to the fresh water side of Lake Washington must travel through the Chittenden Locks.

Mackay Marine to Outfit RB-M Project

Marinette Marine Corporation (MMC) and Kvichak Marine Industries (KMI) have recently been awarded a $600m contract for the production of up to 250 Response Boat Medium (RB-M) boats for the United States Coast Guard. It has been over three years since the Marinette-Kvichak spec boat underwent testing at the USCG base in Norfolk, VA. Mackay Marine, Inc will be outfitting the 45 ft. RB-M vessels with a state of the art marine electronics package. The main suite of electronics will consist of Furuno’s Navnet Vx2 radar/plotter/sounder system with Ethernet capability so the crew will truly have an integrated electronics package. The autopilot system will be comprised of the Simrad AP25 autopilot, and be fully integrated into their marine electronics platform.

Wärtsilä Acquires JMC Marine

Wärtsilä has signed a letter of intent to acquire a Danish propulsion system service company JMC Marine A/S. The company, which employs 28 people, specializes on propulsion system maintenance based on laser measuring technology and has a $3.5 Million turnover. "This acquisition will further strengthen Wärtsilä's total service offerings. Our aim is to provide as broad a spectrum as possible of tailored solutions and expertise know-how covering every aspect of operation and maintenance. The know-how developed by JMC Marine speeds up and improves customer service", says Tage Blomberg, Group vice president and Head of the Service division. The acquired business will be named Ciserv Denmark and it will concentrate on service for propulsion systems and engine repair.

ILO Body Updates Minimum Wage for Seafarers

A Sub-Committee of the Joint Maritime Commission (JMC) of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) today agreed to extend the validity of the current ILO minimum monthly wage for seafarers of US$465 to 31 December 2004. That figure became applicable on 1 January 2003. It also agreed to increase this minimum wage to US$500 effective 1 January 2005. The mechanism for setting the minimum wage for able seafarers is provided for by the ILO Seafarers' Wages, Hours of Work and the Manning of Ships Recommendation, 1996 (No. 187). The ILO minimum wage takes into consideration a formula which reflects changes in consumer prices and exchange rates against the US dollar in 49 maritime countries and areas. F/V Pinnacle Delivered by Tri-Star Marine

Jensen Maritime Consultants, Inc. (JMC), recently completed the design for new 140 x 38 ft. F/V Pinnacle. The Seattle naval architecture firm designed the new vessel for Walt Casto of Snohomish, Wash. Tri-Star Marine, Seattle, delivered the vessel to the owner in February 1999. In late 1997, Walt Casto met with HMC to discuss the prospects of building a new vessel. The original Pinnacle, built at Homeport Marine Services, Moss Point, Miss. in 1991, was to be sold to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game as a fisheries patrol vessel. Casto wanted to replace the existing vessel with a JMC design of similar capacity and length. A previous 114 ft. JMC design was used as a basis and significantly expanded and modified to fit the design parameters.

Wärtsilä Finalizes JMC Marine Acquisition

Wärtsilä´s acquisition of the Danish propulsion system service company JMC Marine A/S has been finalized. JMC Marine is specialized on propulsion system maintenance based on laser measuring technology. The turnover of the company is $3.61 M with 28 employees. The acquired company will be named Ciserv Denmark and it will concentrate on service for propulsion systems and engine repair. The acquisition consists of the laser measuring and alignment business. It also includes vibration measuring, analysis and services of monitoring systems and engine repair. The company will be consolidated in Wärtsilä with immediate effect.
