We are indeed ramping up our presence in the Americas. From a distribution perspective, Hurtigruten is developing stronger, deeper and more strategic partnerships to drive our expedition cruise products.

Hull and propeller performance degradation can cause a 15-20% loss in vessel efficiency, with a corresponding increase in fuel consumption and GHG emissions. Diligent hull condition monitoring and maintenance can negate these penalties and represents an effective, low-cost energy saving measure available to ship owners for immediate implementation. In responding to the market need to cut fuel costs, MACSEA is ramping up its Hull Medic hull condition monitoring service using its published methodology and automated, cloud-based data analytics process. The company is offering its hull condition monitoring analytical services for as low as $495 per month per ship for ten ships or more. Analysis can be done from data already collected or MACSEA can provide an automated data acquisition system.

Alaris Companies last month announced it is working with the U.S. Coast Guard to help it decrease energy use and emissions via its fleet energy management program. Maritime Reporter recently visited with Alaris CEO, Bobbi Wolff, and Executive VP of Engineering, Michael Gaffney, to discuss the company, its system and the global trend to minimize maritime’s carbon footprint. Alaris recently won a contract to help the U.S. Coast Guard decrease energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Can you give us an overview of the vessels studied and the findings?

The Secretary of the Navy recently presented the Energy Conservation (ENCON) award winners for FY2002 in ceremonies conducted at the Navy Memorial in Washington, DC. USS Essex (LHD 2) was among these prestigious award winners. These Navy and Marine Corps activities were singled out for executing comprehensive conservation programs based on senior-level command involvement, well-staffed and trained energy teams, aggressive awareness campaigns, investigation and execution of innovative energy conservation measures, and consistent reduction in energy consumption. The award winners represent Navy activities, ships and Marine Corps bases. USS Essex won the top performance award in the large ship category.

Energy conservation awards were also announced for Navy shore activities and Marine Corps bases. During FY 2003, Commander, Pacific Fleet (COMPAC) and Commander, Atlantic Fleet (COMLANT) ships, even during this high level operational era, avoided the consumption of many thousands of kilowatt-hours of electricity. Using energy education, the Fleet was able to reallocate over 1,160,000 barrels of fuel, to high OPTEMPO ships.

Using Incentivized ENCON Energy Awareness, the fleet was able to reallocate over 1,160,000 barrels of fuel, to high OPTEMPO ships. In ship operating terms, this is equivalent to 22 “ship years” of underway steaming using energy conservation initiatives provided by NAVSEA’s ENCON Team.
