Ampelmann, MMA Offshore Team Up for FPSO Support in Ivory Coast

Dutch offshore gangway specialist Ampelmann said Thursday it had secured a contract to support maintenance work on a floating production storage and offloading unit (FPSO) in Ivory Coast."An A-type motion compensated gangway has been fitted to MMA Offshore’s DP2 vessel, the MMA Privilege, and has arrived at location. In the coming years, an A-type gangway will ensure smooth and continuous crew change operations from the MMA Privilege to the FPSO," Ampelmann said, without sharing further info on the end client.

A new plan is being formulated to preserve and improve one of the world's most historic and well-known vessels.The record-setting superliner Queen Mary has been sitting permanently moored in Long beach, Calif. since its removal from transatlantic service in 1967. Fire-stricken Icebreaker Overhauled

SENER reports it has completed the engineering works relating to the re-outfit and overhaul of the Almirante Irizar icebreaker following a fire accident in an Antarctic season. In 2009, the Argentinean Navy and the Tandanor SACyF shipyard asked SENER Ingenieria y Sistemas – Argentina to deliver an engineering integral project for the repair and modernization of the Almirante Irizar icebreaker. After a series of meetings between the Tandanor design team and SENER, a final agreement was reached for the technical scope of work to be included both for the basic and the detail designs…

New Crew Planning Software in Development

Hamburg-based ship-owning and ship management company E.R. Schiffahrt developed a Crew Compliance Optimizer, CCO, together with its partners Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement and the scientists of the Fraunhofer Center for Maritime Logistics and Services (CML). "The maritime industry is in urgent need of an instrument capable of accurately planning the size and composition of the crew for a particular ship size and route and the work processes required during port stays," said Ole John, Senior Research Associate with Fraunhofer CML. The number of sailors needed on board essentially depends on how many are required to run the ship safely at all times and perform maintenance work in addition to that.

Costa Concordia Parbuckling to Get Green Light Soon

The salvage operation (known as the 'parbuckling project') to upright the wreck of the partially sunken 'Costa Concordia' has been given provisional approval by the Italian government's Civil Protection Department and is expected ot take place at a convenient date in September. The meeting convened in Rome was at the headquarters of the Civil Protection Department and was attended by the Emergency Commissioner Franco Gabrielli, as well as representatives from the Advisory Committee, the Observatory, the Micoperi-Titan Consortium and the cruise line Costa Crociere.

It simplifies and reduces administrative tasks for shipping companies and provides budget security.

Dong Energy to Build Westermost Rough OWF

DONG Energy to build this offshore wind farm (OWF) located in the North Sea off the British east coast. The construction will represent a total investment of approximately EUR 1 billion including the construction of the transmission assets. When the wind farm goes into operation, the transmission assets will be sold to an offshore transmission operator, as required by UK regulation. Westermost Rough will consist of 35 turbines from Siemens Wind Power, each of 6.0 megawatt, with a total capacity of 210 megawatt. It will be able to supply CO2-free power corresponding to the annual power consumption of almost 210,000 British households.

Northern Offshore Receives Major Industry Health and Safety Accolade

Northern Offshore, Ltd (“Northern Offshore”), operator of production and drilling vessels for the global offshore oil and gas industry, will be presented with a major safety accolade at the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards, later this year. The company’s Energy Enhancer – a jack up rig designed specifically for harsh environments like those found in the North Sea – has been recognised with a Gold award as a result of Northern Offshore’s commitment to striving for continuous improvement in HSE standards.

The Forgotten Merchant Mariners of WWII

Don Horton of North Carolina started his career on barges during World War II at the age of 10. His father, mother, sister and brothers all worked on U.S. merchant marine coastwise tugs and barges during the war. In 1942 his eldest brother, William Lee Horton, Jr., was killed when a German U-boat attacked his tug, nine miles of the coast of Virginia. The Merchant Mariners Act of 1988 granted veterans status to merchant mariners who served during WWII. However, the small group of merchant mariners who served on tugs and barges…

MDD and MSCL Partner with Du Pont

Malta Drydocks (MDD) and Malta Shipbuilding (MSCL) have joined forces with the Swiss-based Safety Company, Du Pont Safety Resources, to implement a major safety improvement program involving all levels of employees throughout each business. The extensive and in depth program will last three years and has the objective of substantially reducing the number of unsafe acts that ultimately lead to accidents. Continuous work is ongoing to improve safety performance at both MDD and MSCL. Improvements in recent years have taken place with MDD being awarded the British Safety Council 4 Star rating in 2001. This new initiative will enable more progress to be made and takes the safety agenda to the forefront in both companies.

In a move that will change Senesco Marine’s focus and provide continuous work for the next three years, officials at the shipyard announced they have signed a contract with New Jersey based U.S. Shipping, LLC (USSHIPLLC), the largest American Flagged petroleum/chemical carrier in the United States, to build a 140,0000-barrel double-hulled chemical AT/B with tug that can double as a 150,000-barrel double-hulled petroleum AT/B. U.S. Shipping has options for three more 150,000-barrel double-hulled petroleum AT/B’s with Senesco Marine.
