Ørsted and Eversource to Charter Newbuild CTVs from WindServe and AOS

Offshore wind developers Ørsted and Eversource announced Thursday that they have chosen two regional vessel operators that will partner with Rhode Island shipyards to build crew transfer vessels (CTV) to service their wind farm projects in the U.S. Northeast. The joint venture partners revealed plans to charter five new Jones-Act-compliant CTVs, including three from New York-based WindServe Marine and two from Massachusetts-based American Offshore Services (AOS).The purpose-built aluminum catamarans are designed to handle the unique offshore conditions at the wind farms…

Ørsted Orders CTV Pair in the US

Orsted U.S. Offshore Wind has entered into an agreement with the offshore wind support services provider WindServe Marine LLC to construct a two purpose-built offshore crew transfer vessels (CTVs).The first CTV will be built by US Workboats in Hubert, North Carolina and used for Orsted’s Coastal Virginia offshore wind farm, followed by subsequent service on northeast projects.The second CTV will be built by WindServe’s affiliate shipyard, Senesco Marine, in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, specifically for Orsted’s and Eversource’s Revolution Wind project located off the southern New England coast.CTVs are the workboats that carry workers to and from offshore wind towers for construction…

US Naval Submarine Modules Shipped by Barge

This was the first for the program and part of the plan to increase shipment capacity in support of the U.S. Navy's two-submarines-per-year build rate. The module that comprises the torpedo room for North Dakota (SSN 784) was loaded onto the sea shuttle, which is used for the two-plus-day voyage to Electric Boat's main shipyard in Groton, Conn. Right behind it was the module containing the auxiliary machine room (AMR) for John Warner (SSN 785), which is headed to Electric Boat's fabrication plant in Quonset Point, R.I.

Powell Named President of JMS Naval Architects

JMS Naval Architects & Salvage Engineers (JMS) has named Blake Powell to the position of President. Mr. Powell previously served as Vice President. Rick Fernandes, who has been with the firm since its founding, has been named Vice President. Jack Ringelberg will remain onboard as Chief Executive Officer and Bruce Banks, who founded JMS in 1988, remains Chairman. Powell previously served as JMS Vice President and has over 20 years of experience providing naval architecture, marine engineering, marine surveying and marine casualty response services to a commercial and government client base representing all aspects of the maritime industry. Mr. Powell earned his degree in Naval Architecture from the University of California.

Rescue 21’s Disaster Recovery System

The Rescue 21 Disaster Recovery System (DRS), a self-sufficient mobile system designed to temporarily restore full Rescue 21 communications in the event regular communications are lost, can now be deployed throughout the continental United States with as little as 24 hours notice. This is an important capability as the U.S. Coast Guard prepares for the busiest months of the hurricane season, which are August and September. This marks the first hurricane season the DRS will be fully deployed by the Coast Guard. Previously a contractor was responsible for deploying the system, which meant the DRS could not be moved from its contractor-owned Huntsville, Ala., storage facility to an area close to an approaching hurricane without an approved contract and contingency funding.

Today, thanks to a recent overhaul at SENESCO Marine's (formerly SENESCO) repair facility in Quonset Point, Rhode Island, the vessel is back at its home base in Woods Hole, Mass., preparing to head back out to sea for another 5-7 years of ocean exploration. SENESCO Marine began its a overhaul on the Albatross IV at the company's Quonset Point headquarters in December 2002. Launched in 1962, the Albatross IV is the second oldest in a fleet of 15 research vessels used by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
