Russia Strikes Deal with DP World to Develop Arctic Sea Route

Concordia Explores Converting Tankers to Container Carriers

As the tanker market languishes and the containershipping sector drives full speed ahead, Concordia Maritime announced it has embarked on a technical design study on the feasibility of converting several of its tankers to container carriers.Concordia Maritime launched the study together with Stena Teknik and a German consulting company specializing in ship design. The aim is to investigate the feasibility of converting and adapting a P-MAX vessel for container transportation.

Ulstein Designing Non-fossil Fuel Containership

Naval architecture and marine engineering firm Ulstein Design & Solutions AS said it is designing a unique, energy efficient containership that will run 100% emissions free and without the use of fossil fuels. The concept is being developed for Oslo-based EDGE Navigation, a maritime start-up focused on developing commercial ships with non-fossil propulsion. Ulstein did not reveal details on the alternative propulsion system, but said the ship would feature its patented X-BOW hull lines.

Wärtsilä Developing Autonomous Container Shuttle Service

Finnish marine equipment and technology company Wärtsilä said on Thursday it is working to develop an autonomous, emissions-free intra-port, inter-terminal container shuttle that would help address the emerging capacity bottleneck for internal container transportation.The project is part of an international alliance headed by the Port of Rotterdam Authority, which has this month been awarded nearly €25 million in EU funding to implement projects aimed at sustainable and smart port logistics.

Hapag-Lloyd Expects Q1 Operating Profit to More Than Triple

Hapag-Lloyd, HHLA Form Ties

Hapag-Lloyd Trials Biofuel

German shipping major Hapag-Lloyd announced that one of its ships recently refueled in Rotterdam with an eco-friendly biofuel, as part of its plan to reduce CO2 emissions."For the first time, the “Montreal Express” is being powered by so-called “B20” fuel, which consists of 80 percent low-sulfur fuel oil and 20 percent bio-diesel based on cooking oils and fats that had previously been used in the food service/catering industry," said a press note from the container transportation company.The biodiesel generates up to 90 percent less CO2 emissions than conventional fuels, it said.With this test, Hapag-Lloyd is taking another step towards reaching its ambitious climate-protection goals.“By the end of this year…

Hapag-Lloyd Doubles EBIT for 9 Months

German international shipping and container transportation company Hapag-Lloyd said that its earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) in the first nine months of 2019 significantly increased to EUR 643 million (9M 2018: EUR 299 million).The group net result rose substantially to EUR 297 million (9M 2018: EUR 13 million). Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) surpassed EUR 1.5 billion (9M 2018: EUR 812 million). The EBITDA increase of EUR 699 million includes a positive effect of approximately EUR 341 million caused by the new reporting standards IFRS 16.After the first nine months of the year, revenues rose to approximately EUR 9.5 billion (9M 2018: EUR 8.5 billion).

CMA CGM Group Cut Emission by 17%

Since 2015, CO2 emissions per container transported per kilometer have been reduced by 17%, said CMA CGM Group, the shipping and logistics giant."The Group has achieved a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions per container transported per kilometer between 2005 and 2015.
