Maersk, IBM Discontinue Shipping Blockchain Platform

Shipping company Maersk said on Tuesday it would discontinue a blockchain platform announced in 2018 in partnership with IBM with the aim of limiting the industry's costly paper trail.The platform called TradeLens will be phased out by the end of March next year, Maersk said."While we successfully developed a viable platform, the need for full global industry collaboration has not been achieved," the company said in a statement.(Reuters - Reporting by Jacob Gronholt-Pedersen; editing by David Evans)

Quality assurance and certification firm DNV GL granted type approval for IBM’s Maximo Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) software, a tool that helps ship owners maintain their vessels in accordance with international regulations.The certification process for Maximo version 7.x was overseen by Manchester-based maritime and offshore specialist IT firm SRO Solutions, part of the Cohesive Companies."Shipowners are legally required to implement a Planned Maintenance System (PMS) to ensure their vessels are operated and maintained in accordance with class and manufacturer requirements.

Partners Aim to Help Shipowners Meet Hazardous Materials Regulations

Maritime and offshore specialist IT firm SRO Solutions is launching a new partnership with international inspection agency SGS and maritime digitization specialist NautilusLog to help shipowners meet this year’s Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) deadline, and manage ongoing IHM maintenance.Owners of European-flagged vessels of 500 GT and over have until December 31, 2020 to create an IHM. In order to comply with the new EU-Ship Recycling Regulation, the presence of materials such as leaded paint and asbestos must be noted, along with its location on the ship and the volumes involved.

Modern-Day Mayflower Sets Sail Ahead of 400th Anniversary Voyage

IBM Joins Mayflower Autonomous Ship Project

International technology giant IBM has joined a global consortium of partners, led by marine research organisation ProMare, that are building an unmanned, fully-autonomous ship that will cross the Atlantic on the fourth centenary of the original Mayflower voyage in September 2020.A new Mayflower will set sail 400 years after the historic voyage, this time using AI and other advanced technologies, the American IT major said.The Mayflower Autonomous Ship (MAS) will use IBM’s AI, advanced servers, cloud and edge computing technologies to navigate autonomously and avoid ocean hazards as it makes its way from Plymouth, England to Plymouth, Massachusetts.
