WNY Shooting Tragedy: SECNAV Orders Security Review

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus has directed a rapid review of Navy and Marine Corps' security procedures at military bases in the United States. "Our Sailors, Marines, and civilians are familiar with the dangers of service, but our security is something we can never take for granted," said Mabus. Adm. William E. Gortney, commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, will lead the review for the Navy. Lt. Gen. Rick Tryon, commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command, will lead the review for the Marine Corps. The review is to be submitted to Mabus by Oct.

Navy League Honors Prominent Leaders

America's Navy League to honor prominent industry, navy, city and financial leaders at their 111th New York City annual dinner. The following individuals are to be honored by the Navy League  formed 111 years ago in New York City with the encouragement of President Theodore Roosevelt). Daniel F. Admiral William E. Gortney , U.S. Navy, Commander, U.S. Honorable Raymond W. Joan E. "We are extremely pleased to recognize these individuals," stated Rear Admiral J. Robert Lunney , NYNM (Ret.) president of the New York Council. "They represent the finest qualities of leadership, and have significantly contributed to the nation and the nation's sea services," he added. The black-tie dinner is on Thursday, April 18th, 2013, at the Waldorf Astoria New York.

Navy to Commission LPD 24 'Arlington'

The Navy set to commission the newest San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship, 'Arlington'. The ship is named for the county of Arlington and honors the first responders and the 184 victims who died when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon Sept. 11, 2001. "This ship and her proud name symbolize what is exceptional about the United States," said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus. Surface Warriors to Meet at Annual Symposium

The Surface Navy Association (SNA) National Symposium will be held January 15-17, 2013, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Crystal City, VA. The association was incorporated in 1985 to promote greater coordination and communication among those in the military, business and academic communities who share a common interest in Naval Surface Warfare and to support the activities of Surface Naval Forces. SNA provides for its members support, programs and activities which enable professional growth, personal satisfaction and camaraderie.

Maersk Alabama Crew Repels Suspected Pirate Attack

MANAMA, Bahrain, Nov. 18, 2009 - The U.S.-flagged Maersk Alabama's security team repelled an attack from suspected pirates this morning 560 nautical miles off the northeastern coast of Somalia, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command officials reported. Four suspected pirates in a skiff came within 300 yards of the Maersk Alabama and used small-arms weapons in an attempt to board the ship.The ship's security team responded with evasive maneuvers, long-range acoustic devices and small-arms fire, causing the suspected pirates to break off their attack. Ship Seizures Broaden Piracy Challenge

Two ship seizures in the Indian Ocean in recent days appear to indicate that pirates have broadened their focus beyond the heavily patrolled Gulf of Aden. Pirates hijacked two chemical tankers: the Bahamian-flagged, Norwegian-owned vessel Bowasir March 25 and the Panamanian-flagged, Greek-owned Nipayia March 26, a Navy spokesman confirmed. Bowasir and its 23-member crew were operating more than 380 nautical miles southeast of Kismayo, Somalia. Nipayia and its 19 merchant mariners were pirated 490 nautical miles east of Mogadishu, the official said.

Regional Cooperation Highlighted During NAVCENT Change of Command

During his change of command ceremony, the outgoing Commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, Vice Adm. Kevin Cosgriff, emphasized the need for fostering relationships with coalition partners. "The more Coalition and partner nations collaborate to provide security for the region the more they are able to achieve," he said. During the ceremony, Vice Adm.
