Naval Architect Mitchell Levi Joins The Shearer Group

The Shearer Group, Inc. (TSGI) announced Mitchell Levi has joined its naval architecture, marine engineering, and marine surveying firm as a naval architect. He holds a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Michigan. For his undergraduate research, Levi examined the highly coupled relationships between propulsion loads and cooling systems.While studying at the University of Michigan, Levi completed internships at TSGI, the American Bureau of Shipping and Fincantieri Marinette Marine.

NSB Invests in New Simulator

NSB GROUP will work with Wärtsilä on the technical upgrade of the simulator of its NSBacademy. Since 2007 NSB is training Nautical Officers in its own Maritime Training Center. The retrofit for the technical update began in June and is expected to last three months.The NSBacademy has two ship‐handling simulators with a field of view of 270° and 180° respectively. Norwegian Partners Developing Cloud-based Maritime Training

Kongsberg Digital (KDI) and the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) are partnering to develop cloud-based simulation exercises for the international maritime education market.As a developer of cloud-based simulation software, KDI is aiming to drive the evolution of cloud simulation technology as a sustainable and immersive supplementary tool for building competencies within the maritime industry, the company said, adding its partnership agreement with USN will seek to scale up the scope of maritime training.

Goodwood Ship Management Opens Training Center, Office in Mumbai

Goodwood Ship Management, the Singapore based management company, has expanded its seafarer training facilities in Mumbai.   A new training center and office has been equipped with the latest training simulation software and tools for Goodwood to further nurture its pool of seafarer talent.   “We are delighted that a MAN B&W ME Electronic Engine Simulator has been successfully installed in our new training center in Mumbai. Floating Wind Power: A Semisubmersible Floating Turbine Foundation

Floating foundations for wind turbines present some technical advantages, which is encouraging more and more industry players to develop new floaters. Firstly, they can be deployed in deep seas, independent of the soil conditions. Secondly, the installation and heavy maintenance can be done in sheltered areas, so that the whole OFWT can be towed directly to the wind farm’s location by conventional tugs. However, floating foundations also bring new constraints on the wind turbine due to their motions in waves and wind.

Siemens Acquires CD-adapco for $970m

Siemens and CD-adapco have entered into a stock purchase agreement for the acquisition of CD-adapco by Siemens. The purchase price is $970 million. CD-adapco is a global engineering simulation company with software solutions covering a wide range of engineering disciplines including Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Solid Mechanics (CSM), heat transfer, particle dynamics, reactant flow, electrochemistry, acoustics and rheology. Last fiscal year, CD-adapco had over 900 employees and revenue of close to $200 million with software-typical double digit margins.

Transas, XVR Simulation Form Partnership

Transas has announced its new strategic cooperation with XVR Simulation to expand their maritime training capabilities and to deploy common complex projects in the safety and security simulation market. Transas and XVR Simulation have just entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which was officially signed on the first day of the Transas Simulation User Conference 2016, in Singapore. R&D Project Targets Better Gangway Operability

Kongsberg Maritime is working with Norwegian shipping company Østensjo and the Norwegian Marine Technology Research Institute (Marintek) on a new research and development project for operations using motion compensated and telescopic gangways, typically found on accommodation vessels in the offshore sector. BCG Donates Simulation Software to Support US Naval Academy

Maritime training solutions provider Buffalo Computer Graphics Inc. (BCG) has donated its Enhanced Graphical User Interface (GUI2) simulation software to the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation in Annapolis, Md. for distribution to the academy’s seamanship and navigation department. BCG’s donation included four software licenses to support past donations from Northrup Grumman Corporation of the Navy’s Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) to train midshipmen on the charting system they will encounter once they graduate and move out to the fleet.

“FS3” Motion-based Simulator for Dutch Navy

A two-year project is underway which will lead to the development of a Fast Small Ship Simulator. Driving a small, fast navy boat in heavy seas can be a real challenge. Effects of broaching, surfing, capsizing risk, slamming and planing put severe demands on the crew and the boat handling. It requires a well developed  skill-set to safely navigate  under various operational  circumstances. With these challenges in mind, a two-year project has just started  to develop a dedicated  training tool, which is currently known as the Fast Small Ship Simulator (FSSS) or FS3.

BMT Reports Strong Performance for 2014

The River School ordered additional laptop computers preloaded with BCG’s simulation software to assist with training courses. Buffalo Computer Graphics (BCG) Inc. has delivered a series of simulation products to Maritime Training International (MTI), in Jacksonville, Fla. Mitsubishi Super Skiving System

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has completed development of the "Mitsubishi Super Skiving System" for machining internal gears with high speed and outstanding precision. The new system has overcome technical issues characteristic of conventional skiving by use of an MHI developed, innovative barrel-shaped multiple-cutting-edge rotary tool (patent pending), enabling mass production of difficult-to-machine internal gears. In addition, longer tool life, combined with shorter machining times, enables significant reductions in production costs. MHI is aiming to commence marketing of the new tool and dedicated skiving machine in April, 2015.
