Adapted ME-GI Gas Engine Runs on Hydrogen

MAN Energy Solutions’ licensee, MITSUI E&S Co. Ltd., has announced that it has successfully tested a 50-bore MAN B&W two-stroke engine up to 100% load at its Tamano facility while running on hydrogen, a world-first for the maritime industry.In collaboration with MAN Energy Solutions, MITSUI converted one of the four cylinders of an MAN B&W ME-GI (-Gas Injection) engine to hydrogen operation. MAN Completes First Ammonia Engine Test

MAN Energy Solutions has announced the successful first running of a test engine on ammonia at its Research Centre Copenhagen (RCC). Advent Technologies Partners with Alfa Laval to Explore Fuel Cell Uses

U.S. based fuel cell and hydrogen technology company Advent Technologies Holdings, Inc. announced it will collaborate with Alfa Laval, a global provider of heat transfer, separation, and fluid handling products, on a project to explore applications of Advent’s methanol-powered high-temperature proton exchange membrane (HT-PEM) fuel cells in the marine industry.Funded by the Danish Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP), the project is a joint effort between Advent, Alfa Laval and a group of Danish shipowners.

Svanehøj Bags Fuel Pump Order for 15 LNG Dual-fuel Containerships

Danish marine pump specialist Svanehøj announced it secured a new order from Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding to deliver fuel pump systems for a series of 15 newbuild 7,000 TEU dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG) container vessels.The total of 30 deepwell fuel pumps will be delivered from August 2022 to January 2024, Svanehøj said, noting the order ranks among its largest relating to LNG fuel to date.The deal marks the second time within the last year that this customer has chosen Svanehøj as the supplier of LNG fuel pump systems.

Scandlines Orders Zero-emissions Ferry from Cemre

Denmark-headquartered Scandlines said it has entered into a contract with Turkey's Cemre Shipyard to build an emissions-free freight ferry for the Puttgarden-Rødby route. The ferry will enter service in 2024.With a crossing time of one hour, the ferry is emissions free. It can also be operated as a hybrid ferry like the current passenger ferries on the Scandlines routes between Germany and Denmark. As a hybrid ferry, the crossing time is 45 minutes.Initially, the ferry will exclusively charge in Rødby.

Desmi Opens New Office in Japan

Desmi opened its own office in Tokyo, Japan. The new office, which is a legal entity of DESMI Ocean Guard A/S, will be headed by Noribumi Suganuma as of August 1, 2021. Noribumi Suganuma has 18 years’ experience in the shipping and marine industries in Japan, as well as several years’ experience from the automotive industry. The main focus of the new endeavor will be the sale of DESMI’s Marine & Offshore products with special attention to ballast water management systems. “Japan represents a significant potential market for DESMI. Measured by GDP Japan is the third largest economy in the world, and seen from a shipowner perspective, it is the second largest in the world.

Eastern Pacific Shipping to Operate Methanol- and Ammonia-powered Vessels

Singapore-headquartered shipping company Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) said on Friday that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with OCI N.V. (OCI) and MAN Energy Solutions (MAN) to develop methanol and ammonia as marine fuels to aide in industry-wide decarbonization and environmental preservation efforts.The partnership involves using select conventional vessels from EPS’ existing tanker fleet that use MAN engines to be retrofitted, allowing them to be powered by methanol and ammonia which will be supplied by OCI. Also, EPS will construct newbuild vessels with MAN engines powered by the same two alternative marine fuels. OCI intends to charter the first retrofitted vessel from EPS.The announcement is in line with EPS’ agnostic approach to its alternative marine fuel program.

Danish Consortium Developing Ammonia-fueled Engine

Innovation Fund Denmark, the Danish investment entity, has announced the establishment of a consortium to develop a two-stroke, ammonia-fueled engine for maritime shipping. It aims to specify and demonstrate an entire, marine-propulsion system that will pave the way for the first commercial order for an ammonia-fueled vessel.MAN Energy Solutions will lead the consortium that also numbers: Eltronic FuelTech, the Danish fuel-system supplier; the Technical University of Denmark (DTU); and DNV GL, the leading classification society.

Ineos Adds New Gas Barges for Rhine Shipping

UK-based chemicals company Ineos said Wednesday it has accepted delivery of three of four new gas barges that will be used to transport butane gas from the ARA region (Antwerp, Rotterdam, Amsterdam) to the Ineos ethylene cracker facility at Koln, Germany. DMA Sells an Inspection Ship

Singapore Company Fined for Illegal Scrapping Attempt

Ørsted Completes Divestment in Hornsea 1 Offshore Wind Farm

Danish offshore wind farm developer Orsted A/S has completed the divestment of 50% of the Hornsea 1 Offshore Wind Farm to Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP).Three months ago, Ørsted signed an agreement to sell 50% of the 1,218MW offshore wind farm Hornsea 1 to Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP). Hornsea 1 is under construction and will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm when commissioned in 2020.As part of the agreement, Ørsted will construct the wind farm under a full-scope EPC contract.
