Kalmar Upgrades Bristol Port's STS Crane

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has signed a contract with The Bristol Port Company to undertake a comprehensive upgrade of one of the terminal's ship-to-shore (STS) cranes.The order was booked in Cargotec's 2018 second quarter order intake and the upgrade project is scheduled to be completed during Q1 2019.The Port of Bristol is located at the mouth of the River Avon in south-west England and can handle vessels of up to 130,000 dwt.James Overthrow, Director of Engineering at The Bristol Port Company said: "We chose to partner with Kalmar because of their proven track record in crane construction and retrofit projects. Bulker Loses Power, Runs Aground

The U.S. Coast Guard is monitoring a vessel that lost propulsion and briefly grounded in the vicinity of Welch Island, Wednesday. The crew of the 738-foot bulk carrier Miyama is currently underway enroute to Kalama north berth, after having effected repairs to their propulsion system, with the tugs Deschutes and Sommer S escorting the vessel. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River received a report from Columbia River Pilots stating the vessel ran aground around 11:20 a.m. The watchstanders directed the launch of an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew, out of Coast Guard Air Station Astoria, to survey the vessel and surrounding area. No visible pollution, damage or injuries have been reported. An initial attempt to refloat the vessel was made during high tide at 1:30 p.m.

UK Detains 6 Foreign Flagged Ships in October

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) announced that six foreign flagged ships were under detention in UK ports during October 2014 after failing Port State Control (PSC) inspection. During October, there were three new detentions of foreign flagged vessels in a UK port. Three vessels remained under detention from previous months, and four vessels were released during October. A total of two vessels remain under detention at the end of October.

Ten Ships Detained in the UK in May

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) announced that ten foreign flagged ships were under detention in UK ports during May 2014 after failing Port State Control (PSC) inspection. During May, there were four new detentions of foreign flagged vessels in UK ports. Six vessels remained under detention from previous months. Five vessels were released during May. A total of five vessels remain under detention at the end of May. 1. In response to one of the recommendations of Lord Donaldson's Inquiry into the prevention of pollution from merchant shipping and in compliance with the EU Directive on Port State Control (2009/16/EC as amended), the Maritime and Coastguard agency (MCA) publishes details of the foreign flagged vessels detained in UK ports each month.

The U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) announced that nine foreign flagged ships were under detention in U.K. ports during February 2014 after failing Port State Control (PSC) inspection. During February, there were four new detentions of foreign flagged vessels in U.K. ports, while five vessels remained under detention from previous months. Three of the detained vessels were released during February, leaving six vessels under detention at the end of the month.

Port of Vancouver Welcomes Maiden Voyage Filipinos

Port of Vancouver inform of the welcome given to the 'M/V Alam Sinar' commanded by Capt. Arturo A. Lobigas of the Philippines on the bulk carrier's recent maiden voyage arrival in the United States. Lobigas and his 19-member Filipino crew were welcomed to Vancouver by representatives from Pacific Northwest Ship and Cargo, and Port of Vancouver USA. The Port says that the Class NKK bulk carrier M/V Alam Sinar was built in Japan in 2014. and is owned by Grace Ocean Private Limited and operated by Malaysian Bulk Carrier.

ASRY Signs Solas Agreement

ASRY, a ship and rig repair yard in the Arabian Gulf, is expanding its range of in-yard services by signing a Service Agreement with Solas Marine Services Group. The Agreement will allow Solas to build a 2,000-square-meter Service Center for Life Boats, Life Rafts and Fire Fighting & Life Saving Appliances in ASRY, which will not only expand ASRY’s services portfolio, but also bring new business opportunities to the Kingdom itself. This is the first development in a program of increasing ASRY’s technical resources, which will continue to roll out in 2014.

Latest monthly figures show that there were six new detentions of foreign flagged vessels in U.K. ports and three vessels remained under detention from previous months. Only six vessels remain under detention at the end of this month.

Tsavliris Salvages Collided Vessels in Aegean Sea

On July 4 Tsavliris Salvage dispatched its salvage tug Megas Alexandros from her Piraeus salvage station, to the assistance of bulk carrier Katherine (17,255 GT, 28,711 DWT), laden with 26,400 MT of hot briquetted iron, following collision with bulk carrier Baru Satu (9,978 GT, 16,190 DWT), in the Kafirea Strait, Aegean Sea. As a result of the accident, the M/V Katherine was rammed by the bulbous bow of the M/V Baru Satu penetrating her cargo hold no.5, (which flooded) locking the two vessels together.

Syncro Marine Panel NKK Approved

The marine variant of Kentec’s popular Syncro AS (Syncro ASM) single- or two-loop, networkable analogue addressable fire control panel has now received type approval from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (NKK). Nippon Kaiji Kyokai is a member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). This latest type approval for the Syncro ASM fire panel is in addition to type approvals already awarded by Det Norske Veritas, Germanischer Lloyd, Lloyds Register, Korean register, China Classification society and American Bureau of Shipping.

MCA Detains Five Vessels in June

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) announced today that five foreign flagged ships were under detention in U.K. ports during June 2013 after failing a Port State Control (PSC) inspection. Latest monthly figures show that there were two new detentions of foreign flagged vessels in U.K. ports during June 2013 and three vessels remained under detention from previous months. The overall rate of detentions compared with inspections carried out over the last twelve months was 3.18% this is a slight decrease from May’s twelve month rate. Three of the detained vessels were registered with a flag state listed on the Paris MOU white list, one was registered with a flag state on the grey list and one was unregistered.

Three Southeast Asian Tugs Sold to Latin America

Marcon International of Coupeville, Wash. announced the sale of three twin screw, ocean-going tugs from Malaysian based, International Bulk Trade Pte. Ltd., to a private Central American buyer. The Singapore-registered sister-tugs sold were the 2010 built Surya Ratna 18; the 2009 built Surya Ratna 15 and the 2009 built Surya Ratna 16. All three tugs were built by Hung Seng Shipbuilding Sdn. Bhd. in Sibu, Malaysia, and are powered by twin Cummins KTA50M2 main engines producing a total of 3,200BHP at 1,800RPM. These drive fixed pitch props in kort nozzles developing a bollard pull of between 40 and 45 tonnes and free running speed is 12kn. The tugs are classed with Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (NKK).

New Bridge Nav Watch Alarm System

Uni-Safe Electronics’ new Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System BW-800 complies with IMO MSC 128(75) and the new IEC 62616 performance standard from February 2010. The company said it expected to be the first company in the world to present a Type Approval of a Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System complying with the new IEC 62616 performance standard. CENTA authorized for In-House Testing

CENTA is the first company worldwide to which Germanischer Lloyd (GL) has conferred the responsibility for alternative product certification of type-approved couplings. In the future, CENTA will have the authority to carry out acceptance testing and final stamping of those couplings that have previously been classified as approved types. These tests must be performed in accordance with the “Alternative Product Certification,” a modular certification system developed by Germanischer Lloyd (GL). Containment Efforts, Bulker Grounding

The owners of the 26,800 dwt bulk carrier Full City, which ran aground whilst in ballast at Langesund off the southern coast of Norway in heavy weather on July 31, say the majority of the approximately 1,200 tons of bunker fuel on the vessel remains on board. Meanwhile, they are continuing to focus their priorities on containment and limitation of any potential environmental damage in the wake of the casualty. This is being done in full co-operation and co-ordination with the Norwegian authorities. Response efforts have so far focused on the containment and recovery of the oil which has escaped from the vessel’s bunker tanks into the sea.

NKK Partners with Dassault and IBM for Shipbuilding PLM

IBM and Dassault Systems announced that NKK Corporation has signed an agreement with IBM Product Lifecycle Management and Dassault Systems around PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) for shipbuilding. PLM solutions based on V5 architecture developed by Dassault Systems and marketed by IBM worldwide, is setting future industry standard which help shipbuilding companies to reduce the development period as well as further improve their products. NKK, Hitachi Zosen Consider Shipbuilding Merger

NKK Corp., a major Japanese steelmaker and shipbuilder, and Hitachi Zosen Corp., another major Japanese shipbuilder, will study the feasibility of cooperating in shipbuilding to strengthen competitiveness in a tough global market. The two companies will consider cooperating in sales, design, procurement and manufacturing, they said. In March, NKK said it was considering an alliance with Hitachi Zosen to try to revive its flagging shipbuilding operations.
