The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) has today departed the dry dock at Puget Sound Naval Shipyards and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF) . The event marked the conclusion of the 9-month dry dock portion of Stennis’ Docking Planned Incremental Availability (DPIA) maintenance period. “This milestone is a big win, not just for the Stennis and PSNS & IMF team, but also for the Navy,” said Stennis’ commanding officer, Capt. Michael Wettlaufer. To date, Stennis and PSNS & IMF personnel completed more than 11,000 critical repair jobs including the restoration of Stennis’ multi-ton propellers, shafts and rudders, as well as refurbishing all four aircraft catapults.

Trident-class ballistic missile submarine USS Pennsylvania (SSBN 735) completed a major step in its 27-month, engineered refueling overhaul (ERO) when it departed Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PNS & IMF) Aug. 5. Pennsylvania, based at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, entered dry dock in December 2009 for its ERO, which will enable the submarine to provide another 20 years or more of service. Cmdr. USS San Francisco (SSN 711) departed Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF) April 7, after more than three years of maintenance work to her bow, forward ballast tanks and associated mechanical and weapon systems. The challenging maintenance involved PSNS and IMF cutting more than one million pounds from the now decommissioned USS Honolulu (SSN 718) forward ballast tanks and sonar sphere. The bow restoration also involved many piping systems, mechanical linkages, combat systems components used for torpedo systems and sonar sounding equipment that facilitates control and operation of the submarine. USS Michigan (SSGN 727) undocked in late October, five days early, at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF). Michigan was at PSNS & IMF for a planned five-month major maintenance period. While Michigan’s maintenance availability was scheduled in advance, the full extent of the necessary work isn’t always known until the ship is drydocked. The Trident maintenance plan objectives include all the maintenance to be performed to allow the ship to operate safely and unrestricted during prescribed operating cycles, operating intervals, and for its prescribed service life. Execution of the maintenance plan ensures that the ship operates safely and unrestricted while at sea and, maximizing their operational availability.

Naval Base (NB) Kitsap, Bremerton, held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the new CVN maintenance complex, Sept. 14. The Pacific Maritime Institute, in partnership with Captain Jeff Slesinger, has developed and implemented a three-phase Z-drive Tug Handling Program. The program is oriented towards Captains and Mates that are experienced Tug Operators, but have little or no experience driving Z-drive tugs. Utilizing the Pacific Maritime Institute’s state-of-the-art Tug Simulator, the Program guides operators through a series of “at sea” situations that are specifically designed to focus on and hone the specific skill sets required to operate a Z-drive tug. At the end of the nine day course of instruction, operators come away with a fundamental understanding of, and an ability to perform, the unique boat handling skills required to maneuver Z-drive tugs in light tug, barge, and ship assist work.
