Robots to Optimize Shipyard Operations

Stennis Departs Dry Dock

The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) has today departed the dry dock at Puget Sound Naval Shipyards and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF) . The event marked the conclusion of the 9-month dry dock portion of Stennis’ Docking Planned Incremental Availability (DPIA) maintenance period. “This milestone is a big win, not just for the Stennis and PSNS & IMF team, but also for the Navy,” said Stennis’ commanding officer, Capt. Michael Wettlaufer. To date, Stennis and PSNS & IMF personnel completed more than 11,000 critical repair jobs including the restoration of Stennis’ multi-ton propellers, shafts and rudders, as well as refurbishing all four aircraft catapults.

Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division welcomes back the carrier for inactivation. Towed from Naval Station Norfolk to the shipyard, Enterprise had more than 100 shipbuilders on board who were involved with the construction and maintenance of this first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. "Enterprise set the stage for a long and distinguished career that transformed the U.S. Navy and put Newport News Shipbuilding on the map as the birthplace for America's nuclear aircraft carriers," said NNS President Matt Mulherin.

USS Pennsylvania Departs Drydock

Trident-class ballistic missile submarine USS Pennsylvania (SSBN 735) completed a major step in its 27-month, engineered refueling overhaul (ERO) when it departed Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PNS & IMF) Aug. 5. Pennsylvania, based at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, entered dry dock in December 2009 for its ERO, which will enable the submarine to provide another 20 years or more of service. Cmdr. Gustavo Gutierrez, Pennsylvania's commanding officer, applauded the efforts of his crew and shipyard personnel for ensuring a safe and successful undocking. "I cannot be more proud of the hard work done by my crew along with the shipyard to make this day possible," said Gutierrez.

USS San Francisco Departs Shipyard

USS San Francisco (SSN 711) departed Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF) April 7, after more than three years of maintenance work to her bow, forward ballast tanks and associated mechanical and weapon systems. The challenging maintenance involved PSNS and IMF cutting more than one million pounds from the now decommissioned USS Honolulu (SSN 718) forward ballast tanks and sonar sphere. The bow restoration also involved many piping systems, mechanical linkages, combat systems components used for torpedo systems and sonar sounding equipment that facilitates control and operation of the submarine. San Francisco arrived at PSNS in September 2005 following a 5,600-mile open ocean surface transit from Guam. On Jan.

PSNS & IMF Receives Commendation

Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF) was presented the Navy’s Meritorious Unit Commendation (MUC) on Friday, Nov. 7, by Vice Adm. Kevin McCoy, Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), on behalf of the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV), for superior performance providing shipboard damage recovery to USS George Washington (CVN 73). George Washington was damaged from a May 22 fire in an unmanned Auxiliary Boiler Exhaust and Supply space, resulting in extensive damage to the U.S. Navy’s first forward-deployed nuclear powered carrier. USS Michigan Completed Early

USS Michigan (SSGN 727) undocked in late October, five days early, at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF). Michigan was at PSNS & IMF for a planned five-month major maintenance period. While Michigan’s maintenance availability was scheduled in advance, the full extent of the necessary work isn’t always known until the ship is drydocked. The Trident maintenance plan objectives include all the maintenance to be performed to allow the ship to operate safely and unrestricted during prescribed operating cycles, operating intervals, and for its prescribed service life. Execution of the maintenance plan ensures that the ship operates safely and unrestricted while at sea and, maximizing their operational availability.

USS San Francisco Undocks with New Bow

USS San Francisco (SSN 711) returned to the water on Oct. 10, 2008, after successfully undocking at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF), a field activity of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). The dry docking resulted from the submarine’s Jan. 8, 2005, collision with an undersea mountain. The challenging, one of a kind project involved PSNS & IMF cutting over one million pounds of ex-USS Honolulu (SSN 718) forward Ballast Tanks/Sonar Sphere and attaching it to the USS San Francisco.

NAVSEA Teamwork Delivers USS George Washington On Time

Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) repair work will enable USS George Washington (CVN 73) to assume its role in Yokosuka, Japan, as our nation's only forward-deployed aircraft carrier in September. Working as "One Shipyard," skilled personnel from two NAVSEA field activities -- Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF) and Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) provided most of the craftsmen and skills required to complete the effort on Aug. 21, after only 91 days of repair work. Naval Base Kitsap Opens New Carrier Maintenance Facility

Naval Base (NB) Kitsap, Bremerton, held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the new CVN maintenance complex, Sept. 14. The old warehouse, where the complex now stands, was transformed and renovated to create the CVN maintenance building as a way to help the Navy efforts to improve the efficiency and quality of work of the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS) and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (IMF) personnel. During the ribbon cutting ceremony, Capt. Reid Tanaka, NB Kitsap commanding officer, welcomed and thanked guests for attending the special event. The CVN maintenance complex will support its staff by providing 61,462 square feet in a three story building with shop areas, project administrative areas and extra outdoor storage.

PMI Develops Z-Drive Tug Handling Program

The Pacific Maritime Institute, in partnership with Captain Jeff Slesinger, has developed and implemented a three-phase Z-drive Tug Handling Program. The program is oriented towards Captains and Mates that are experienced Tug Operators, but have little or no experience driving Z-drive tugs. Utilizing the Pacific Maritime Institute’s state-of-the-art Tug Simulator, the Program guides operators through a series of “at sea” situations that are specifically designed to focus on and hone the specific skill sets required to operate a Z-drive tug. At the end of the nine day course of instruction, operators come away with a fundamental understanding of, and an ability to perform, the unique boat handling skills required to maneuver Z-drive tugs in light tug, barge, and ship assist work.

Lincoln Ahead Of Schedule

USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) left the dry dock on Dec. 18, ahead of schedule and under budget becuase Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF) cut the time of ship tank maintenance by more than half. Partnering with Ship’s Force and the Lincoln Project Team, the Tank Value Stream Team accomplished the goal. Navy Ship Completes Sea Trials

The Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) recently returned to homeport in Bremerton, Wash., after completing the first weeklong phase of sea trials, according to a Navy Newsstand report. Puget Sound Shipyard Receives Navy's Top Safety Honor

Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Donald C. Winter announced April 18 that the Northwest Regional Maintenance Center (NWRMC), Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF) won the Fiscal Year 2005 SECNAV Award for Achievement in Safety Ashore in the large industrial activity category. The annual award is presented to Navy and Marine Corps shore activities based on the overall quality of their Occupational Safety and Health Programs. “The significance of senior leadership’s role in promoting operational excellence through adherence to effective risk management and hazard reduction principles is made evident by the achievements of this year’s winners,” said Winter.
