The Italian shipyard Cantieri Navali Megaride has recently commissioned Siemens to equip a 65-m-long offshore supply vessel from the Italian coast guard with the Siship EcoProp hybrid propulsion system. EcoProp includes two main gear units, electric propulsion motors and the hybrid propulsion control system. Diesel engines are combined with electric drive components, each of which has an output of 180 kilowatts per shaft. Siemens has developed this propulsion solution specifically to meet the requirements of smaller ships by making it easily installable in tight spaces. The company will be responsible for the project management, engineering and commissioning of the complete diesel-electric propulsion system, which is scheduled for the beginning of 2012.
