Subsea Industries develops durable, non-toxic hard hull coating systems. Ecospeed was the first coating and was launched in 2002, but since then a line of other products has been added.EcoshieldEcoshield is an enhanced version of Ecospeed. Small but significant variations of the Ecospeed formula have been tested on rudders since 2002 with extraordinary results. After years of testing (initially under the name Ecospeed Strong) the product was launched in 2013.Ecoshield is designed to protect rudders and other underwater running gear against the cavitation phenomenon: against pitting…

Ecofix Filler Coat Cuts Rudder Repairs Cost

With an increasing trend for thruster and rudder manufacturers finishing their products with self-cleaning protective hard coatings, Antwerp headquartered Subsea Industries has introduced a filler coating for use with its award-winning Ecoshield hard coat system. Ecofix, specifically formulated to provide shiprepairers and Original Equipment Manufacturers with a cost-effective solution for the repair of corroded or pitted steel surfaces, returns the thruster or rudder to its original state prior to touching up the repaired area with Ecoshield. Boud Van Rompay, Executive Director of Subsea Industries, said: “We are seeing an increasing…

NSF Certification for PPG's Products, Coating Systems

PPG Industries’ protective and marine coatings (PMC) business announced that four individual coatings and primers and two combined coating-and-primer systems have been certified by NSF International for water-tank applications. AMERCOAT 133/844 pit-filler is a hand-applied coating designed to fill deep holes in pitted steel surfaces with a single pass. It features a 100-percent solids formulation and emits almost zero volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and it trowels easily to a smooth finish. SIGMAWELD 199 primer is a weldable preconstruction primer that provides up to 12 months of corrosion protection during construction and offers extended recoatability thereafter.

A team of divers from the A7 Project have measured the metal thickness of the sunken HMS A7 submarine using a Cygnus DIVE underwater ultrasonic thickness gauge, allowing them to determine the current condition of the submarine and to monitor its deterioration over time. The A7 Project is part of The SHIPS Project (Shipwrecks and History in Plymouth Sound), which is being run by a local group of divers and shipwreck enthusiasts. The project aims to record the long maritime history…

Ecofix Corrosion Repair with Ecoshield Application

Subsea Industries announced a new product for filling and building up a corroded and pitted steel surface to its original form prior to recoating with Ecoshield. According to the manufacturer, Ecofix is as tough as the steel itself, machinable and can be used to repair most pitting or corrosion damage on rudders, stabilizer fins, thrusters and other underwater gear. Ecofix is used in combination with Ecoshield, the ultimate rudder protection coating. When a rudder or other piece of underwater ship gear has not been properly protected, the surface will become corroded.

Coatings: Metal Fusion Helps Stop Corrosion

New advances in metal fusion technology produce a metalized coating with no porosity, which can be applied at rates similar to those achieved by airless painting practices. The substrate temperature does not affect the process, and there is no curing time. The competitive process results in extremely long term near permanent corrosion protection, which is designed to be competitive in price with conventional corrosion systems. High speed metalizing of a variety of substrates can be accomplished rapidly under harsh field conditions. As there is no cure time required for the process, which can be used to apply up to 35 mils with only one coat, the application time is often much reduced from a conventional corrosion prevention system.
