USS Gerald R. Ford Returns to Newport News
The U.S. Navy’s newest aircraft carrier has returned to Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News Shipbuilding division for 12 months of modifications, upgrades, system improvements and repairs.On Sunday USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) was moved to the shipyard’s Pier 3, where it will undergo a maintenance period typical of newly delivered warships.The $13 billion USS Gerald R. Ford, commissioned July 22, 2017, is the first ship in the nation’s newest class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.
Newport News Begins Nuclear Sub Overhaul
Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Newport News Shipbuilding division has begun scheduled overhaul work on the nuclear-powered submarine USS Boise (SSN 764).The Los Angeles-class submarine arrived at Newport News on Monday and will undergo planned maintenance and repair activities pierside before it will be moved to a dry dock in January 2019. Newport News Promotes Two
Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced two promotions to the company’s leadership team at its Newport News Shipbuilding division: Dave Bolcar has been promoted to vice president of submarine construction, and Bill Smith has been promoted to vice president, fleet support programs. Having most recently served as director of the Columbia-class program, Bolcar is now vice president of submarine construction, which currently encompasses both the Virginia- and Columbia-class submarine programs.
Silversea’s President Steps Down
Silversea Cruises announced that Bill Smith will step down from his position as president of the company, effective December 15th to pursue personal interests. Smith stated that given the company's success, and with his personal objectives having been accomplished, it is a good time to move on. Smith joined Silversea in March 1995 as senior vice president, sales and marketing, and was named president in November 1995. During his tenure as President, Silversea established its worldwide reputation for excellence. The line expanded from a two-ship to a four-ship fleet. Silversea CEO Albert Peter expressed his appreciation for Smith's important contributions to the development of the company.
