Purpose-built oceanographic research and survey vessel New Horizon has been sold from the Scripps Institute of Oceanography to private interests, announced ship broker Marcon International, Inc. New Horizon will continue to work under her new ownership as a U.S. flag research and survey vessel. The 170' loa x 36' beam x 15' depth / 12.76' draft New Horizon was specially built as a dedicated oceanographic research ship for Scripps, whose research vessels and research platform make up one of the largest academic fleets in the world.

The U.S. Navy christened the newest oceanographic research vessel Kilo Moana (AGOR 26) during a 7:45 a.m. ceremony at Atlantic Marine, Inc., Jacksonville, Fla., on Nov. 17, 2001. The Honorable Daniel Inouye, U.S. Senator from Hawaii, was the ceremony’s principal speaker, and his wife, Margaret Inouye served as ship sponsor. In the time-honored Navy tradition, Mrs. Inouye broke a bottle of champagne across the bow and formally named Kilo Moano, which is Hawaiian for Oceanographer. Kilo Moana is designed to perform a broad spectrum of oceanographic research in coastal and deep ocean areas. Research ranges from physical, biological and chemical oceanography to environmental investigations, ocean surveys, engineering, marine acoustics, marine geology and geophysics.

Atlantic Marine, Inc. has acquired a heavy lift barge, and it is located at its new home on Pinto Island here at the Port of Mobile on the Gulf of Mexico. The barge, named the Mobile Heavy Lifter, will expand Atlantic Marine's capabilities allowing it to accommodate offshore rigs, jackups and semisubmersibles that due to size restrictions are currently unable to fit on Atlantic Marine's largest dry dock; the 50,000 ton drydock, Alabama. Alabama Shipyard has contracted with Manson Construction Co. to build a hopper dredge at its facility in Mobile, Alabama. The 12,000 cubic yard hopper dredge, designed by Hal Hockema & Associates of Seattle, Washington, has a length of 390-ft, breadth 76-ft and depth of 30-ft. Engineering and Planning for the hopper dredge has already begun at the facility on Pinto Island. Steel cutting will begin in November 2004 with delivery slated for October 2005. Ron J. Seahorse Shuttling and Technology LLC, a wholly owned entity of Conoco, has completed the functional design of a new tanker for shuttling crude oil from the deepwater Gulf of Mexico to shore. double-hulled "GoMAX 550(TM)" shuttle tanker will be capable of transporting 550,000 barrels of crude oil. With a 40-foot draft, the new shuttle tanker will be able to enter most ports in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. "A major challenge of producing new crude oil discoveries in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico has been developing efficient means of transportation to U.S. refineries," said Antonio Valdes, manager of Conoco Marine. The GoMAX 550(TM) design is the result of a shipbuilding alliance between Conoco, Alabama Shipyard of Mobile, Ala., and Samsung Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries of South Korea.

While it is difficult to find an industry where fierce competition and price wars are not the hallmarks, it seems at times that the ship repair industry has created and patented the formula. Ship repair and conversion yards have weathered years of cut-throat battling, as a slew of new, low-cost competitors regularly make an appearance. The trend is predicted to continue indefinitely. In general, ship repair operations are weathering many of the same financial, corporate and political storms as other major industrial companies. According to Dennis Stonebridge, a shipping consultant for Drewry Shipping Consultants, the forecast revenue for 1998-2003 is likely to fall in total by an estimated 1.5 percent.

The Office of Naval Research announced today the selection of two Shipbuilding Initiative projects to receive a combined total of $1 million of Navy funding. Atlantic Marine, Inc. has received a contract for a second state-of-the-art articulated tug and barge (ATB) vessel to be built at its Alabama Shipyard facility in Mobile, according to Dick Wells, President. This will be the second ATB to be supplied to Reinauer Transportation Companies headquartered in Staten Island, New York. "We were awarded this contract to build a second ATB for the Reinauer Transportation Companies for three reasons. First, the performance of the first ATB has been excellent, fully meeting the requirements of Reinauer's customers. Second, Alabama Shipyard has worked hard to support the first ATB to ensure that Reinauer is a fully satisfied customer.

American Classic Voyages Co., which is currently engaged in a high-profile effort to build cruise ships in the U.S., recently provided financial information on its expansion plans and its outlook for 2001. The 1,212-passenger ms Patriot, the first ship in American Classic Voyages' United States Lines fleet, just completed a $21 million refurbishment at Cascade General Shipyard in Portland, Oregon. The ship is in Los Angeles for the beginning of a series of inaugural activities that will introduce 6,000 travel agents to United States Lines. The ms Patriot will begin its permanent seven-night Hawaiian Island itinerary with its inaugural cruise on December 9.

Just five months after the shipyard launch of Delta Queen Coastal Voyages' first vessel, the second ship in the new fleet was christened at Atlantic Marine, Inc., in Jacksonville, Fla., Friday, November 17, 2000. The 226-passenger coastal vessel will inaugurate nine cruise itineraries featuring the Great Lakes, Canadian Maritime Provinces and U.S. eastern seaboard in 2001. The ship launched Friday, the CV Cape Cod Light, will debut Aug. 4, 2001; its sister ship, CV Cape May Light, will enter service on May 5, 2001.

Southeastern New England Shipbuilding Corporation (SENESCO) has appointed four new executives in a move prompted by the company’s growth over the past six months. The new executives include the company’s first chief financial officer and other senior level financial and operations staff. Gordon W. Fletcher, appointed as SENESCO’s first CFO, will direct the company’s financial affairs, including overseeing all contracts, developing financial statements, implementing new financial policies and procedures and supervising the accounting department. Fletcher is a CPA who received a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Natal in Durban, South Africa. While in South Africa, he worked as an audit supervisor for KPMG and as a finance manager for a construction general contractor.

Goodrich Corporation is a member of the Raytheon-led team recently selected by the U.S. Navy to finalize preliminary designs of a Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) -- the next- generation surface combatant. The team has seven-months to finalize designs. In addition to Raytheon as the prime contractor, the team consists of Goodrich's Jacksonville, Florida-based Engineered Polymer Products division along with John J. McMullen and Associates, Umoe Mandal, and Atlantic Marine, Inc. The contract for repairs to TGS-NOPEC's seismic vessel, Northern Access, has been awarded to Atlantic Marine, Inc. The vessel suffered damage during an engine room fire in February in the Gulf of Mexico. Repairs will include complete renewal of electrical systems in the auxiliary engine room; machinery inspections/repairs; insulation renewals; and cleaning and painting. Repairs are anticipated to take 42 days with re-delivery scheduled for early April.

Alabama Shipyard Inc will be building a casino boat for Hollywod Park, Inc. who will operate the cruising riverboat from Belterra Resort and Casino in Indiana about 35 miles south of Cincinnati Ohio. Shore side facilities will include a hotel and golf course, while the vessel will contain 1,800 gaming positions. The Hollywood Park casino vessel will be the 14th casino vessel built by Atlantic Marine companies and the second such vessel to be built at Alabama Shipyards. At 370 x 104 ft., it will be one of the largest casino vessels in operation. Propulsion will be provided by three 12-cylinder Cummins KTA38 M2 engines each producing 1,300 hp at 1,800 rpm for a total of 3,900 hp turning cardon shafts and driving three Shottel rudder propellers.

Construction of a new articulated tug and barge has begun for Reinauer Transportation Companies, Staten Island, N.Y. The 124-ft. oceangoing tug and mating 135,000 barrel capacity notched barge are scheduled to enter service along the U.S. eastern seaboard in early December 1999. Atlantic Marine Inc., Jacksonville, is building the tug, which was designed by Robert Hill of Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering, Bellingham, Mass. The vessel's mating 460 ft. double-hull barge was designed by and is being built at Alabama Shipyard, Mobile, Ala., a subsidiary of Atlantic Marine. Tug Nicole Leigh Reinauer will be powered by two Cat 3612s, each rated 4,211 bhp at 1,000 rpm. Two Lufkin 5:1 gears will drive 140-in. dia. Bird-Johnson Workhorse propellers, providing the vessel with approximately 172,000 lbs.
