Rolls-Royce has recently delivered 2 launch & recovery systems for unmanned surface vehicles (USV) & manned Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIBs) to an international navy. These systems have been retrofitted aboard frigates and utilize a custom articulating davit with a telescopic boom. New High-power Waterjet Propulsors for Navy LCS

The Navy's fifth littoral combat ship (LCS), 'Milwaukee', the first to benefit from high-power density waterjets. The product of an Office of Naval Research (ONR) Future Naval Capabilities (FNC) program, the waterjets arrived last month at the Marinette Marine shipyard in Wisconsin, where Milwaukee (LCS 5) is under construction. Rolls Royce to Lead Canadian Naval Research Project

An award of $3 million from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) funds the project. The development of Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) and Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) is a rapidly expanding part of naval marine technology, and Rolls-Royce has extensive capability in the handling systems that enable these advanced craft to be launched, refuelled and recovered from the sea. Rolls-Royce will develop automated systems to support the missions carried out by unmanned naval vehicles, including mine-countermeasures, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, coastal security patrols and environmental data collection. Eckart Joins HS Marine Propulsion

John Eckart has joined HS Marine Propulsion, LLC as the Principal Engineer. Eckart has worked in the marine industry for 25 years in the areas of hydrodynamics and ship propulsion. He spent the past 15 years as a principal engineer with Rolls-Royce Naval Marine, Inc., where he was responsible for propeller and waterjet design and analysis. In that time John designed propellers for hundreds of commercial and military applications. He is a graduate of Kings Point and The University of Michigan with a degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.

Rolls-Royce Wins Navy Contract

Rolls Royce Naval Marine, Inc., , is being awarded a $7.9m firm-fixed-price contract for a DDG-1000 Baseline Tactical Auxiliary Turbine Generator (ATG) set engineering services and support. This ATG set will be delivered to the Navy land based test site in  This ATG set will meet the same specification established by the DDG-1000 shipyard for the lead ship installation. Work will be performed in , , (80 percent) and , (20 percent) and is expected to be completed by Feb. 2010. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract wasnot competitively procured. The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington Navy Yard, D.C., is the contracting activity.

RR to Study Propulsion System Corrosion

Rolls-Royce Naval Marine Inc., Walpole, Mass., is being awarded a $7,030,097 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for research and development of Nickel Boron (NiB) Coatings for Naval Propulsion Systems to minimize corrosion. Work will be performed in Pascagoula, Miss., (75 percent) and Stuart, Fla. (25 percent), and work is expected to be completed by Jan. 2013. Contract funds in the amount of $3,563,860 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was competitively procured and advertised on the Internet as a Broad Agency Announcement; 67 white papers were received, 19 proposals were requested, and 17 awards have been made. Lockheed Selects Rolls-Royce to Power LCS

Rolls-Royce has been selected by Lockheed Martin to provide MT30 gas turbine engines and waterjets for up to two ships of the Littoral Combat Ship program (LCS), the next generation of US Navy warship. LCS is being designed and built to improve the US Navy's operational capability in the littorals, or coastal waters. Rolls-Royce's selection as the engine and waterjet provider for the Lockheed Martin ships leaves it well positioned for the program. The Lockheed Martin ship design incorporates two Rolls-Royce MT30 marine gas turbines driving four Rolls-Royce high-speed waterjets. The first vessel is due to be launched in December 2006 by Lockheed Martin. General Dynamics will also construct up to two ships for the same class.

High Capacity At-Sea Transfer System Under Development

A team led by Rolls-Royce has been selected to develop and deliver an integrated high-capacity ship-to-ship cargo transfer system concept for the US Navy's Office of Naval Research (ONR). materials, personnel and equipment in heavy seas. Ingram Lines Completes Standardization

Ingram Barge Lines operates one of the largest towboat fleets on the U.S. inland waters, with 70 towboats ranging from 600 to 9,200 hp and over 1,800 barges. The company operates on the Mississippi, Ohio, Cumberland, Tennessee, Kanawha, Illinois and the Monongahela Rivers as well as the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. Under the direction of David O'Neill, Assistant Vice-President of operations based in Paducah Kentucky, the firm is undertaking a repower and engine standardization program in the 16 vessels of their Ingram Support Services division. These boats, in the 600 to 1,800 hp range, are employed primarily in demanding short haul and fleeting operations. Currently powered with four different makes of engines, the company is working to standardize to Cummins marine engines.

Joint Agreement Signed by AP&M Field Services, Rolls-Royce

AP&M Field Service and Rolls-Royce Naval Marine Inc have entered into a Teaming Agreement to focus efforts on supporting Ship Transfer programs for the U.S. Navy. The program will combine the expertise of Rolls-Royce Naval Marine in servicing of shipboard Allison 501 generator sets and propeller propulsion systems with AP&M Field Services LM2500 shipboard service capabilities. A contract to support the four-ship, KIDD Class transfer program for the Republic of China (Taiwan) Navy was awarded to Rolls-Royce in May. Rolls-Royce will maintain overall program management, while AP&M Field Services provides on-site project management and LM2500 technical service.

The early 1980s witnessed the birth of the first generation Autohydro by Coastdesign Inc. (now called Autoship Systems Corporation (ASC)). Autohydro was one of a very few PC-based first principles stability and longitudinal strength programs available on the market of the day. Running in DOS, Autohydro quickly became world-renowned as a robust, dependable design and analysis tool for the creation of trim and stability books. Rolls-Royce Invests in Future of Engineering

Rolls-Royce has donated a 501-K5A industrial gas turbine to The George Washington University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS). GW Engineering students will use the gas turbine to develop a finite element computer model and conduct analysis in jet engine failure preventions as well as a range of other topics. They will also use digitized data from the 501-K5 to help create a generic engine model. The engine will be housed at the University’s National Crash Analysis Center (NCAC) in Ashburn, VA. ONR to Christen Advanced Electric Ship Demonstrator

The Advanced Electric Ship Demonstrator (AESD), Sea Jet, funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), is a 133-ft. vessel located at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division, Acoustic Research Detachment in Bayview, Idaho. Sea Jet will operate on Lake Pend Oreille, where it will be used for test and demonstration of various technologies. Among the first technologies tested will be an underwater discharge waterjet from Rolls-Royce Naval Marine, Inc., called AWJ-21, a propulsion concept with the goals of providing increased propulsive effiency, reduced acoustic signature, and improved maneuverability over previous Destroyer Class combatants.
