Software Solutions Debuts & Upgrades

ABS Nautical Systems will release in 2013 a new mobility platform for its NS5 Enterprise.

ABS Nautical Systems continually enhances its NS5 Enterprise software suite of products to meet ever-changing industry demands. Currently in development for release in 2013 are a mobility platform, a new warehouse and inventory management module, as well as a new Hull Inspection 3D module. The mobility platform supports portable devices including scanners, tablet PCs and smartphones. Features will include alert view notifications and mobile calendaring. Any customer with mobility support within the organization’s infrastructure can take advantage of this upcoming technology.

Solstad Offshore Invests iwith SIS

Star Information Systems (SIS) has completed the installation of its Star Information & Planning System (Star IPS) across Solstad Offshore’s fleet of 50 high-specification vessels. Solstad, which operates platform supply vessels (PSV), anchor handling vessels (AHTS) and construction service vessels (CSV) to service the offshore petroleum industry, looked to SIS for an integrated, centralized fleet management system. The company will now use key elements of Star IPS functionality to cover planned maintenance, guarantee claims, asset management, projects and document management.

SIS Sets up Home in Brazil

SIS sent Hans-Kristian Fjaerem to set up its permanent office in Brazil.

Star Information Systems (SIS) has established a new base in Rio de Janeiro to serve Brazil’s thriving offshore sector. To support the manuever, SIS sent Hans-Kristian Fjaerem, one of the firm’s most experienced consultants, to lead the operation, recruit a local team, and service SIS’ growing portfolio of customers in the region. The pace of economic change in Brazil – now the sixth largest global economy – has been accelerated by the discovery of huge oil and gas reserves in the country’s pre-salt basin, opening up an array of opportunities for national and international offshore operators.

BASS Sells Out of Star Information Systems

BASS Software Ltd., global provider of software for fleet and rig management, will use the financial resources it freed up after selling itself out of Star Information Systems (SIS) to continue to invest in its own business by pursuing new markets and developing new products. In 1999, BASS bought a 34 percent stake in SIS, a supplier of maritime software, as an opportunity to complement its product assortment and geographical reach. Since then, however, a strained liquidity situation and very low profit margins have prevented SIS from paying out dividends and investing adequately in product and technology upgrades. Because of SIS’ poor performance and its need for major funding over a long period of time to upgrade its products and technology platform…

Kornet Signs Additional Contract with MirTac

Rederij Kornet has signed a contract for four new vessels with MirTac and Star Information Systems. Kornet has already successfully implemented Star IPS on nine vessels and its office, including maintenance, spares, purchasing, document management and safety management. Proof of increased efficiency, transparency between office and vessels, considerable cost reduction were decisive factors to continue the partnership with MirTac for their new vessels.

Eimskip Chooses Star Information Systems

Eimskip, Iceland’s oldest shipping company, has chosen Star Information Systems for their fleet management. Under the terms of the agreement, Star Information Systems (SIS) will provide a fully integrated software package, including systems to manage maintenance, purchasing, work planning, guarantee claims, messaging, insurance policies and claims, budget and cost control, project, event, crew and document management. The system will be installed on Eimskip’s fleet of 10 vessels and in the office in Iceland.

SIS to Provide Dubai Shipping with Total Fleet Management

According to Star Information Systems (SIS) the company has won a contract to provide DSC (Dubai Shipping Company) with a comprehensive fleet management system. The system will be installed on DSC’s nine vessels and at its head office in Dubai. According to Martin Karlstad, Sales Manager, SIS, the fleet management system will provide DSC with a comprehensive range of software and services, including maintenance, spare parts/purchasing, budget, crew/payroll, ISM/quality assurance elements, ship performance management and a seamless interface to link purchasing with DSC’s existing ERP, Oracle Financials.

Karlstad Named Director of Sales at SIS

Star Information Systems (SIS), a world provider of integrated fleet management software, has appointed Martin Karlstad as the new Director of Sales of SIS Oslo, effective immediately. In this role, Martin will be responsible for the company’s marketing and sales strategy. Martin will also play a leadership role in SIS’s strategic direction and sales practices. Martin brings over a decade of experience in specialized software for shipping and internet technology with companies such as KPNQWEST, ShipNet, and SpecTec (now Xantic). At the beginning of his career, Martin gained solid experience within international sales and market analysis while working as a broker for Sea Service International and market analyst with the US shipowner, Lexmar, Norway.

Star Information Systems (SIS), a provider of integrated fleet management software applications, has appointed Les Smyrl as UK technical agent with overall responsibility for support and implementation of existing and new SIS clients in this region. The announcement was made by Per Anders Koien, SIS's managing director and chief executive officer.

BASS Acquired by Management from Wilh.Wilhelmsen

BASS has secured ownership of BASS (Hong Kong) Ltd. from former parent-company, Wilhelmsen Maritime Services (WMS). The BASS management team used additional financing to complete the agreement, which includes the company's controlling interest (34 percent) in Star Information Systems, a maritime software provider based in Norway. In addition, BASS will continue to provide Barber Ship Management, a unit of WMS, with fleet management software, which accounts for 20 per cent of BASS' annual turnover. The two companies have recently agreed on a four year contract for software and services to support Barber Ship Management in the highly competitive ship-management market.

Nor-Shipping Roundup: Stepping Out in Oslo

The Nor-Shipping Exhibition concluded June 6, 2003. Following were some of the major announcements during the week in Oslo. Kongsberg won a contract for the control systems for four LNG tankers scheduled to be built in Japan. The ships will carry LNG from the Snohvit field to the U.S., Spain and France. Two of the ships are being built for Hoegh shipping lines at Mitsubishi Shipyards, while the other two are being built at the Mitsui and Kawasaki shipyards. Kelvin Hughes was awarded type approval for its ECDIS-based Track Control System. This is the first Approval of its type to be granted by LR and covers the integration of the company's ECDIS and Autopilot products into a system meeting the new IEC 62065 track control performance standard.

SIS and MTS to Provide B2B Solution

Star Information Systems (SIS) and Marine Transaction Services (MTS) of Oslo, Norway, announce the development of a global business-to-business (B2B) software and e-commerce solution for the shipping industry. “MTS and SIS offer true B2B integration. MTS’s expertise in e-commerce for primary marine vendors was a major determining factor for SIS entering into this collaboration. The two companies have worked professionally together for the past two years” said Leif Tusvik, head of department SISCommerce. Under the new cooperation agreement, MTS will integrate marine vendors existing ERP/back office systems with ship owners and operators currently utilising SISCommerce software.

Norwegian Ferry Company Upgrades

Star Information Systems (SIS) has been awarded a 14-vessel, planned maintenance system software upgrade with one of Norway’s coastal ferry operators, Helgelandske AS. Founded in 1867, Helgelandske AS operates a fleet of 16 vessels - 4 fast ferries and 12 passenger ferries. The company is keen on maintaining its high quality operation and confirms that vessels using old RAST systems will now be retrofitted with modern fleet software. “SIS suites of software have been developed in close cooperation with quality conscious shipowners and are designed for ease of integration with most standard IT systems. SIS Secures Contract With Destination Gotland

Star Information Systems (SIS), a provider of integrated fleet management software, has secured a further contract with Destination Gotland for the supply of software systems onboard the company's two Ropax newbuildings. The contract comes shortly after the Swedish shipping company upgraded four of its five vessels with fleet management software from SIS.

Nor-Shipping Product Round-Up

Tribon.com recently released its newest version, 6.0, for easier attainment of information. The new layout presents the relevant product information in a clear and user-friendly overview on the screen making it easy for ship designers to search and find suppliers' product information. Some of the new features are: a new presentation of search results based on product types, a more intuitive product presentation page, easily accessible search tips and help for the Browse Search and Free Search functions, modified system menu to provide a better overview and quicker access to pages and functions and general layout is improved to give a better overview.
