China Aims to Build More than Half the World's Cleaner-fuel Ships by 2025

China has set itself the goal of producing more than half of the world's ships powered by cleaner fuels by 2025, in guidelines published by the industry ministry on Thursday.It did not give any estimates of the number of ships involved.

Hanwha Ocean to Recruit Vietnamese Workers

South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean is conducting a comprehensive cooperation project to train and recruit Vietnamese workers.Hanwha Ocean signed an MOU with the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam (MOIT) in Hanoi, Vietnam on July 22. The aim is to meet the recruitment needs of Hanwha Ocean in the future by supporting programs for strengthening the capabilities of vocational training institutions under the Vietnam Ministry of Industry and Trade. Through this, Hanwha Ocean expects to be able to establish a stable recruitment plan for skilled foreign technical personnel.

DMA Adds 2 New Deputy Director Generals

Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) announced that two new deputy director generals joined its the Executive Board.The new deputy director generals are Rikke Wetter Olufsen and Niels Wammen-Jensen. They both come from director positions within DMA.For the past four years, Rikke has been director of Blue Growth and Maritime Policy at the Danish Maritime Authority. Rikke joined the DMA from the Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs, where she covered a broad portfolio of business policy areas.Niels has been director and served as the DMA's "ambassador" in the Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs for the past two years.

Damen Joins Bangladesh Shipbuilding Initiative

Dutch shipbuilder Damen Shipyards Group and Australian-based Gentium Solutions have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Industry of Bangladesh, seeking to establish and develop shipbuilding and ship repair industry in Bangladesh."The aim is to build ships in Bangladesh, for Bangladesh, with a long-term view of serving export markets. The partners in the MoU will undertake a number of tasks in this direction," said a press release from the Netherlands-headquartered shipbuilding giant that operates 36 shipbuilding and repair yards.First amongst the tasks will be the establishment of a shipbuilding and repair facility built to globally recognized environmental and building standards.

Iran building oil pipeline to terminal outside Gulf

China Maintains Shipbuilding Leadership

China’s accomplished shipbuilding output in the first half of this year stood at 19.66 million deadweight tonnes, up 4.2 percent year on year.Xinhua news agency quoted the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology saying that China received 51.8 percent of global new orders in H1 and held 42.9 percent of the existing orders, cementing the country’s leading role in the sector.In 2018, China took 43.9 percent of global new orders and held 42.8 percent of the existing ones.Given a lackluster global economy, however, the shipbuilding industry still faces grim circumstances, Xinhua said.Intelligent ships and intelligent manufacturing are the drivers for the high-quality development of China's shipbuilding industry…

Denmark Identifies Maritime Cyber Threats

Denmark, India Sign Maritime Pact

The Danish Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs and the Indian Ministry of Shipping have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen the cooperation in the maritime sector between the two countries.With the conclusion of this agreement, the two countries’ mutual commitment and interest in cooperating to ensure good conditions for the maritime sector is underlined.Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs, Rasmus Jarlov said: “India is a major growth economy that plays a key role in the global maritime sector. Denmark Adopts New Strategy for Cyber Security

The Danish Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs has launched a new sectoral strategy for the shipping industry. The strategy is a part of the Danish government’s national strategy for cyber and information security.The strategy contains a number of initiatives aimed at strengthening IT security and preventing cyber threats in the maritime sector, according to a press release from Danish Maritime Authority (DMA).The objective of the strategy is to ensure that safety in Danish waters and on board Danish ships is not compromised by cyber attacks.The responsibility for cyber and information security in the maritime sector lies with the Danish Maritime Authority.

Indonesia Delays New Rules to Limit Coal, Palm Oil Shipments

Indonesia has postponed indefinitely the application of new rules that would limit shipments of coal and palm oil exports to only national shipping companies, a Coordinating Economic Ministry official said on Tuesday. The rule will only be applied once vessel requirements have been calculated and satisfied by the trade ministry, shipping industry and coal and palm oil exporters, Elen Setiadi, acting chief of trade and industry at the Coordinating Economic Ministry, told Reuters by phone.

China to Roll Out Smart Crude Oil Carrier

China's Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co (DSIC) is working on China's first smart crude oil carrier - a special project named "smart ship 1.0 R&D - which will incorporate technology to help the captain operate the ship. The Chinese state media quoted Guan Yinghua, deputy chief engineer of DSIC as saying that the project was assigned by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Guan said that the very large intelligent crude carrier will be the most important result of the project. She said the smart vessels represent the future. China Pledges Support for Domestic Shipbuilders

China aims to capture up to 40 percent of the global high-end marine equipment market over the years through 2020 while reforming and supporting its money-losing shipbuilding industry, the government said on Thursday. The pledges were laid out in a statement published by six ministries on the website of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The statement broadly outlined their plans for Chinese shipbuilding over 2016-2020. The global shipping industry is suffering from a severe downturn that has sapped demand for new vessels. Many shipyards in China, which build mainly mid-to-low-end vessels such as dry bulk carriers, have shut down as a result.

Danish Shipowners Partnership for Green Shipping

The Danish Shipowners' Association, the Ministry of Environment and Food of Denmark and the Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs have concluded a partnership. "The Danish Shipowners' Association, the Ministry of Environment and Food of Denmark and the Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs have concluded a partnership to strengthen cooperation and dialogue across Blue Denmark within the maritime environmental area," says a press statement from Danish Maritime Authority. The partnership is to represent Danish interests globally. At the October session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of United Nations' International Maritime Organization (IMO), the debate on international requirements for ships' environmental impact was speeded up.

Denmark Tightene Water Scooter Regulations

Danish Ministry of Industry will launch a set of new initiatives to enhance safety at sea when operating water scooters, jet skis, speed boats and the like. The new initiatives are to prevent accidents at sea by securing, inter alia, that those riding water scooters have the skills needed and are familiar with current regulations. At the same time, the new initiatives are to make it easier to identify water scooters and their owners and to hold somebody responsible and intervene when the rules are not observed and others' safety is jeopardised. Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs Brian Mikkelsen said: "It is important that everyone can feel safe in Danish waters and in our ports.

Denmark to Host European Maritime Day in 2024

In 2024, Denmark will be hosting European Maritime Day with more than 1,000 participants. With its maritime surroundings, the city of Svendborg will be the setting of the conference, said a press release from Danish Maritime Authority. European Maritime Day is one of Europe's largest maritime conferences. The Council of the European Union has awarded Denmark the honour of hosting the conference in 2024. Earlier this year, the Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs nominated Svendborg as the Danish candidate city. It will be the first time that the conference is held in Denmark, and the Municipality of Svendborg will be at the centre of it all.

Kim Heng Offshore Inks Pact with Iran Marine

The Singapore-based  offshore services provider Kim Heng Offshore & Marine has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Iran Marine Fund (IMF)to provide its technical expertise and financing to Iranian offshore marine and oil & gas projects. Based on the MOU, which was signed by Mehrdad Mozaffari, the IMF managing director, and Tan Keng Hoe Melvin, the general manager for supply chain management in Kim Heng, on Monday, the Singaporean company agreed to provide a €400 million finance to develop Iran's marine industries in several phases. China’s Largest Box Ships Powered by ABB Turbochargers

ABB turbochargers are powering the main engines and auxiliary engines of the largest containership ever built in China, a 20,000 TEU vessel named COSCO Shipping Taurus, launched in June 2017. This first ship was built by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd (SWS) for delivery to COSCO Shipping Lines Co. Ltd, the world’s fourth largest container shipping company. A further ten vessels also for COSCO Shipping Lines will be applied with the same ABB turbocharger configuration. They will add to the company’s fleet of 311 containerships with a total capacity of 1.64 million TEU.

Sino-Danish Focus on Energy Efficient Ships

A delegation from the Chinese Ministry of Industry is visiting Denmark as part of the cooperation between the two Administrations. A Danish-Chinese workshop on energy efficient ship design and marine equipment will be held during the three-day visit. The workshop will be attended by the Danish Maritime Authority, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and other Chinese authorities, as well as shipowners, marine equipment manufacturers, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and Danish Maritime. Sometimes being an industry supplier offers interesting insights – your business is touched by the ups and downs of the charter market, but you are never so involved in it that you lose sight of the big picture. Some of our clients have been hit hard by the market’s general downturn; one client I visited last month began 2008 with 41 maritime software licenses for their vessels – just seven remain today. “We just sold another ship yesterday,” he said, and then after a pause: “Please spare me the update costs for this one, it won’t receive any.” Of course, I nodded.

Royal IHC Bags Uruguay Order for TSHD

Royal IHC has signed a contract for the design, construction and delivery of a 4,200m3 trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) with Administración Nacional de Puertos (ANP) in Montevideo, Uruguay. The contract was signed by Mr Alberto Diaz Acosta, President of the Board of Directors of ANP, Mrs Gladis Liliana Peirano Rivero, Interim General Secretary of ANP and Mr Hans Hesen, IHC Area Sales Director, in the presence of Mr Victor Rossi, Minister of Transport and Public Works of Uruguay and Mr Andre Mechi, Senior Project Manager IHC Latin America. An important criterion for the award of this contract, as defined by the country’s Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining, was to comply with the local content regulations, ensuring close participation of the local marine industry.

Chinese Shipyard New Orders Slump

Drop in commodity prices has slashed global demand for bulk carriers, pushing shipyards out of business, says Chinese news agency Caixin. Huai Jinpeng, a vice minister from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, which oversees the sector said that the industry is plagued by excess capacity even after many large private ship makers have gone bankrupt or stopped production. China alone will build ships with a total carrying capacity of 80 million tons next year, equal to the forecasted increase in global demand, estimates from the ministry showed.
