SGMF, LNG MFI to Pomote LNG as Fuel

The Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) signed a memorandum of understanding with Australia’s LNG MFI to jointly promote the use of liquefied natural gas as fuel. SGMF is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) established since 2013 to promote safety and industry best practice in the use of gas as a marine fuel. Governed by a representative Board and driven by two principal Committees, SGMF has several working groups at any one time solving issues and producing outputs such as Guidelines and checklists for the industry. The Society has produced four ISBN publications in the past two years alone and now has over 120 international members ranging from oil majors, port authorities, fuel suppliers through to equipment manufacturers and classification societies.

Having been an independent marine surveyor and consultant for many years, author and educator Mike Wall has based his new book Marine Surveying and Consultancy – An Introduction on experience. Primarily aimed at those wishing to become independent marine surveyors and consultants, the book covers many aspects of their work with some covered in depth. Marine surveys are of two types, proactive and reactive. In the former the surveyor inspects a vessel before a voyage or activity to ensure that it meets relevant requirements, standards and/or international conventions.

New Book 'Rough Waters' Mingles Fact & Fiction

Throughout his 81 years of life, Doctor Jac has survived cancer, a stroke, open-heart surgery and the death of his son, all while remaining active and successful in business. Widely touted as one of the top human resource consultants in the country, Doctor Jac has had an incredible career and is topping it off this year with the publication of his 400th article and 13th book on human capital return on investment. Doctor Jac doesn’t let his age hold him back from anything and makes a concerted effort to not waste an ounce of his many talents. “Although largely fiction, the book is based on my personal experiences growing up and serving in the Navy,” Doctor Jac said. After publishing “Rough Waters,” Doctor Jac realized he still had more story left to tell.

NI Launch New Maritime Security Handbook

The Nautical Institute has launched Maritime Security handbook: coping with piracy, which focuses on the people who have to cope with piracy – seafarers, shore-based staff and those working in the maritime security industry. IMO Issues SOLAS Update(s)

International Code for the Application of Fire Test Procedures (2010 FTP Code) mandatory from 1 July 2012. Amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) to make mandatory the International Code for the Application of Fire Test Procedures (2010 FTP Code) came into force on 1 July 2012, thereby enhancing the fire safety provisions onboard all ships. The 2010 FTP Code provides the international requirements for laboratory testing,  type-approval and fire test procedures for products referenced under SOLAS chapter II-2 (which includes regulations on fire protection, fire detection and fire extinction).

McGraw-Hill Education Selects SBS Worldwide for Freight Deal

Academic publisher, McGraw-Hill Education, has appointed SBS Worldwide as its freight forwarder and supply chain partner of choice for all inbound air and sea consignments. SBS will manage the logistics of cargo being delivered to the McGraw-Hill Education EMEA headquarters in Maidenhead, Berkshire, which will include inbound shipments from a diverse range of locations, such as USA, Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore. The company will also facilitate a drop shipment service for direct delivery to customer publishers and their respective freight shippers.As part of the agreement, McGraw-Hill Education will use SBS’s award-winning Electronic Distribution Centre (eDC) tool, which will give the company access to real time data on its global consignments – right down to ISBN number.

St. Lawrence Seaway's 50th Anniversary, New Book

The culmination of a century-long dream to link the Great Lakes interior industrial hubs to the Atlantic Ocean, the St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Project stands as one of the largest public works initiatives of the 20th century. Between 1954-1959, the billion-dollar St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Project was the largest waterway and hydro dam project ever jointly built by two nations. It comprised seven locks, the widening of various canals, the taming of rapids, and the erection of the 3,216-foot long, 195.5-foot high Robert Moses-Robert H. Saunders Power Dam. Through the decades the Seaway has seen the transport of 2.5 billion tons of cargo (equivalent to 87 million truckloads) valued in excess of $375 billion. It also produces hydroelectric power for both countries.

IAMSAR Volumes Available

New editions of the three volumes of the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue (IAMSAR) Manual have just been published jointly by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in English, French and Spanish. They include all amendments that were adopted between 2001 and 2007 by IMO's Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) and ICAO. Volume I Organization and Management discusses the global search and rescue (SAR) system concept, establishment and improvement of national and regional SAR systems, and co-operation with neighbouring States to provide effective and economical SAR services. Volume II Mission Co-ordination assists personnel who plan and coordinate SAR operations and exercises.

SKANTI Iridium SSAS DNV Approved

Denmark-based SKANTI has obtained DNV approval for the add-on SSAS-box for the well-proven Iridium terminal using the network of 66 reliable satellites. DNV approves that the SKANTI Iridium SSAS complies to SOLAS, chapter XI, Annex 6 (Dec. 2002). Deadlines for implementation is stipulated in ISPS CODE, 2003 Edition, International Maritime Organization, ISBN 92-801-5149-5. Shipowners around the world have particularly shown interest in the fact that SKANTI’s Iridium SSAS fulfils two features at the same time: While an SSAS-Box is dedicated to the alert system, the SKANTIÒ Scansat-7701 Iridium Terminal can still be used for standard Iridium features such as cost- effective Voice and Data Communications.

P&I Club Publishes ISM Guide

The 'A' rated 54 million GT North of England P&I club has published a second edition of its popular guide for the shipping industry on the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. The first edition of A Seafarer's Guide to ISM, which was published to coincide with the code's phase II implementation in July 2002, has proved an essential shipboard reference and several thousand copies are now in use worldwide. North of England's risk-management manager Tony Baker says: 'Though many companies and seafarers have embraced the ISM as it was intended, we are aware there are others who still have misconceptions about the fundamental ideas behind the code and the way in which a safety management system should be structured and operated.
