Torqeedo Breaks Ground on New HQ

Electric drives manufacturer  announced it has broken ground on its new headquarters and production facilities in the Munich metro area on Wednesday.Construction is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2022, and the site will consist of 3,720 square meters of office space, with a mix of co-working spaces and on-site offices, 4,800 square meters of warehouse, production, and research and development area.Dr. Ralf Plieninger, managing director of Torqeedo, said, "The new facilities will allow direct contact and exchange between various departments.

Kalmar Supplies Terminal Tractors in California

Kalmar, the provider of cargo handling solutions and services to ports, is to supply NFI Industries with 25 Kalmar Ottawa Electric T2E Terminal Tractors for use in their selected distribution centers in California.The order was booked in Cargotec's 2019 Q2 order intake with delivery scheduled to be completed during the first half of 2020, said a press release from the Cargotec's unit.NFI is a fully integrated third-party supply chain solutions provider with locations across North America. Kalmar Intros Electric Reachstacker

Kalmar, a part of Cargotec Corporation,  forges ahead on its electrification journey with maritime industry's first fully electric reachstacker for the global logistics provider Cabooter Group."Kalmar is another step closer to having an electric version of every product in its portfolio by 2021 with the announcement of an agreement with Cabooter Group, who will be the first customer to take a fully electric version of the Kalmar Reachstacker into use in 2021," said a press release from the provider of cargo-handling solutions and services to ports.Since its founding in 1995, the Cabooter Group has grown to become a global logistics provider and one of the leading logistics hub operators in Europe.

Kalmar to Help Bimbo's Ops at Mexico

Kalmar has concluded a deal to supply a total of three Kalmar Ottawa Electric Terminal Tractors T2E to the Mexican bakery product manufacturer Bimbo.Kalmar, part of Cargotec, said in a press release that the order was booked in Cargotec's 2019 Q1 order intake, with delivery of the machines scheduled to take place during Q3 of 2019.Bimbo is the largest baking company in the world, with 199 plants and more than 1,800 sales centres across 32 countries throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa.The company has one of the largest direct distribution networks in the world, distributing products including fresh and frozen sliced bread, buns and cookies. The Kalmar Ottawa electric terminal tractors will be operated at Grupo Bimbo's new distribution centre in Azcapotzalco, Mexico City.

Kalmar Supports Port of Long Beach Electrification

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has signed a contract to supply a fully electric Kalmar Ottawa T2e electric terminal tractor to Long Beach Container Terminal (LBCT) for a six-month demonstration period. The order was booked in Cargotec's 2018 third-quarter order intake with delivery scheduled for Q1 of 2019. A press release from the cargo handling solutions and services provider the Port of Long Beach, California, is the second-busiest container seaport in the U.S. and handles trade worth in excess of USD 180 billion from 175 shipping lines annually.More than 7.5 million container units passed through the port in 2017. LBCT already relies on a wide variety of Kalmar equipment to handle container traffic, including Kalmar rubber-tired gantry cranes and Kalmar Ottawa terminal tractors.U.S.

New Plan Pledges Ferry Safety Lead

Interferry has unveiled a strategic plan promising to put safety issues at the heart of its work as the voice of the worldwide ferry industry. The pledge came at the global trade association’s 41st annual conference in Manila – a venue chosen to spotlight the challenges of domestic ferry safety in developing nations. According to Interferry, the plan signals its overriding ambition to help lift ferry safety in all parts of the world to the very high standard already in place in North America and Europe, where casualties in recent decades have been extremely rare.

ABB, Samsung SDI JV to Develop Microgrids Globally

ABB and Samsung SDI have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote microgrid solutions globally. The two companies will establish a global commercial alliance to develop and market modular and scalable microgrid solutions, utilizing lithium-ion batteries for energy storage. The combination of ABB’s global market presence, its leadership in grid technology and its global service footprint with Samsung SDI’s leading lithium-ion battery technology will enable accelerated growth of the market. Southwest Electronic Energy announced the launch of POW-R Tote, a rugged, lightweight, 12V/117Ah portable power system which provides compact-convenient energy for wherever standard power sources are unavailable. Gaussin Wins 100-unit Deal for Electric Terminal Vehicles

Gaussin Manugistique SA, designer and manufacturer of industrial and port transport vehicles, sealed a record deal for its container-handling Automotive Terminal Trailer (ATT) from Turkish port and logistics operator AKAN-SEL. Under the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on June 26 at the TOC Container Supply Chain Europe show in Rotterdam, AKAN-SEL has placed a confirmed order for 40 ATT units, with an option for 60 more. The new units will be fitted with Gaussin’s new Full Elec Power Pack, which was also officially launched at TOC CSC Europe. Hybrid Ferries Will Use Voith Schneider Propellers

In summer, 2013, the world's first two ferries with a hybrid propulsion system will be put into service. Owned by CMAL, they are being built by Ferguson Shipbuilders in Glasgow. Each of the hybrid vessels will be equipped with two Voith Schneider Propellers (VSP) with an input power of 375 kW per propeller. With its hybrid concept, the shipyard aims to reduce the ferry's CO2 emissions by up to 20 percent. The vessels will be the first of their kind to combine a diesel-electric propulsion system with lithium ion battery technology. The ferries will operate on various routes in the Scottish waters, which are characterized by strong currents and heavy winds.

Corvus Energy, harnessing the power of large format lithium-ion battery systems for marine propulsion, will spotlight its proprietary technology at the International Tug & Salvage (ITS 2010) Conference May 17-21 at the Westin Bayshore Hotel in Vancouver, B.C. The conference marks the world debut of the BRAtt class training tugs, the first of which will feature Richmond, B.C.-based Corvus Energy’s battery and management system utilized as the house power bank. This direct diesel-powered version, will be available for demonstration to ITS registrants.

Solar Powered Wavepiercer Cat

On March 31, 2010 the roof at the HDW Shipyard in Kiel, Germany slid open to reveal to the daylight the what is claimed to be the world’s largest solar powered vessel, a wavepiercer catamaran named Planet Solar. Appearing small against the back drop of the giant crane hoisting her to the water and the enormous ship building halls she was assembled in, the 101.7 ft long, 52.5 ft wide carbon fiber craft was launched a few hours later into the Kiel fjord, floating to her lines and looking more like a misplaced space ship than an ocean going yacht.

Northrop Grumman To Develop Lithium-Ion Battery For Advanced Seal Delivery System

Northrop Grumman Corporation has been awarded a $4 million contract by the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) for the development and integration of lithium-ion battery technology for the U.S. Special Operations Force's new Advanced SEAL Delivery System (ASDS). Work on the ASDS battery system is being developed in conjunction with Alliant Techsystems, Inc. of Horsham, Pa. The ASDS, which is a mini-submarine intended to clandestinely carry Navy SEAL teams and their combat gear to and from hostile shores, is designed and built by Northrop Grumman's Oceanic & Naval Systems business unit.
