DP World UAE Wins Sustainability Award

The global port operator DP World's UAE Region has been recognised for its efforts to create a more efficient and sustainable supply chain when it was awarded the Supply Chain Sustainability Award at this year’s Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) Supply Chain Conference.Mohammed Sulaiman, Business Development Manager of DP World, UAE Region, received the award on behalf of the company at a ceremony held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Dubai’s Festival City, said a press release.The Supply Chain Sustainability Award recognises organisations that initiate best practices in supply chain management through programmes or projects that have a noticeable impact on the economy…

San Diego Expecting Larger Cruise Season

The Port of San Diego is preparing to welcome 83 cruise calls during the 2017-2018 cruise season, with a wide variety of itineraries visiting this inspiring destination. This season Holland America Line remains a strong presence on San Diego Bay along with continued growth from Disney Cruise Line. On Thursday, October 5, the Disney Wonder will be in port, along with Holland America Line’s Nieuw Amsterdam. Approximately 242,000 passengers are expected this year, up from last year’s 224,000. The number of cruise calls remains about the same. Passengers this season will be able to experience a relaxing California Coast cruise, an adventurous voyage around the globe, South Pacific cruises and much more.

Development Agreement Reached for Mobile Powership

Polaris Shipping Co., Ltd., Korea Midland Power Co., Ltd., Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., and Siemens Energy Solutions Ltd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding at COEX Intercontinental Hotel in Seoul on December 10, 2013 to develop Mobile Powership, an integration of shipbuilding and power generating technology in which a highly efficient power generating facility will be installed onto a FSRU (Floating Storage Regasification Unit) for the very first time in the world. It is expected that Mobile Powership will commence its operation in December 2017 with total investment of $940 Million.

‘Parallel Track’ at Upcoming IMUA Meeting

The Inland Marine Underwriters Association (IMUA) annual meeting will be held in Atlanta, May 19-22, 2013 and will feature Parallel Track. The Parallel Track addition is specifically focused on newer, less experienced inland marine underwriting and claims personnel. Continuing education credits will be offered to assist producers and other interested parties in meeting their state insurance licensing requirements. The Parallel Track, which was first introduced two years ago at the association’s Chicago Annual Meeting, will consist of a series of seminars and workshops patterned after the IMUA’s Intro to Inland Marine Course and will run parallel to the more in-depth educational sessions being presented.

Economist Dan North to Address U.S. and Global Financial Forecast

This year’s IMUA Annual Meeting’s keynote address will feature a presentation by Dan North, Chief Economist for Euler Hermes North America. Addressing attendees of the 83rd Annual Meeting, he plans to discuss what lies ahead for both the US and global economies and how it is impacted by monetary and fiscal policies. The 83rd IMUA Annual Meeting will be held May 19-22, 2013 at the Intercontinental Hotel in the Atlanta, GA suburb of Buckhead. Mr. North has been with Euler Hermes North America (EHNA) since 1996, using macroeconomic and quantitative analyses to help manage EHNA’s risk portfolio of more than $150 billion in annual U.S. trade transactions.

Somerville Named MMA Person of the Year

Mr. Robert D. Somerville, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ABS has been named as the Massachusetts Maritime Academy 2009 Maritime Person of the Year. Each year Massachusetts Maritime Academy selects a civilian or military leader who has distinguished him or herself through a career of excellence, innovation, and service to the maritime industries. The honoree is presented with the Captain Emery Rice Medal, named for an 1895 Academy graduate and hero of the First World War. The award will be presented to Mr. Somerville on November 6, 2009 at the 15th Annual Admiral’s Ball, being held at the InterContinental Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts. The Admiral’s Ball is the Academy’s largest annual fundraiser.

Intellian Antenna Systems Win Award

Intellian Technologies, marine satellite entertainment and communications provider, received a World Class Products award from the South Korean Government. Headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, the company’s marine satellite tracking antenna systems were selected by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE) during the recent certificate granting ceremony at the COEX InterContinental Hotel. MKE World Class Products represent over 10 percent of South Korea’s international market share, rank among the world’s Top-5 goods and have an international market scale of over $50m annually. “World class products and producers are anticipated to spearhead attaining this year’s export aim of $450m,” said Minister Yoon-ho.

Updates on the Shipdex™ Protocol

On October 7th 2008, Digital Ship held its 2nd conference for Shipdex™, a new protocol to provide ship technical information electronically, rather than on paper. Shipdex™ was founded in 2007 by two senior managers of shipping companies, Grimaldi Naples and Intership Navigation, who thought that the industry should move beyond supplying all technical paperwork (including maintenance and repair manuals, lists of spare parts and drawings) as paper documents, which then have to be typed into company maintenance and purchasing systems.

Subsea Houston 2002 To be Held Sept. 24

Subsea Houston 2002 will be held Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002 at the Houston Intercontinental Hotel. This, the 3rd annual conference, is expected to be attended by well in excess of 300 delegates. Last year's event, held at the Westchase Hilton and Towers was attended by hundreds of operators, subsea manufacturers, financial analysts and leading offshore service and supply companies. The focus of this year's event is development beyond 10,000 FSW. WCI Reflects on Inland Waterways Industry in 2006

As the inland waterways industry looks back on 2006 and forward to 2007, Waterways Council, Inc. • President Bush’s FY 2007 proposed budget requested a record level of federal funding for 11 Inland Waterways Trust Fund (IWTF)-financed projects. The budget request proposed FY ’07 spending of $394 million for Inland Waterways Trust Fund financed projects, of which $197 million would come from the dedicated Inland Waterways Trust Fund. The remainder would come from general treasury funds, as required under current law. The President’s FY ‘07 budget request is the highest funding recommendation for IWTF funded projects since cost-sharing legislation was enacted into law in 1986.
