Fugro's New USV to Chart Waters Off South Australia

Fugro will use its new uncrewed surface vessel (USV) to chart the waters of South Australia’s Gulf St Vincent and Investigator Strait as part of the Australian Government’s HydroScheme Industry Partnership Program (HIPP).The Dutch-based offshore survey services company will carry out  the 998 km2 survey will be conducted on behalf of the Australian Hydrographic Office (AHO), which will use the data to update nautical charts for safer navigation. Containership Navos Unite Drops Boxes off Australia

At lest three shipping containers were lost overboard from the containership Navios Unite last week off the coast of Australia, the country's maritime safety agency said.The ship reported losing the containers overboard in rough weather about 33 kilometers southwest of Cape Leeuwin in Western Australia at 8 p.m. AWST, Thursday.The Liberian-flagged vessel, which had been traveling from Fremantle to Adelaide in South Australia at the time of the incident, is currently at berth in Port Adelaide, AIS ship tracking data shows.The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) tasked its Challenger jet from Perth to search an area of about 1…

Damen Shipyards Group has delivered a Cutter Suction Dredger (CSD) 500 and a Multi Cat 1506 to Maritime Constructions of Port Adelaide, Australia. The two vessels have been put to use on a port extension project in Onslow, Western Australia.Maritime Constructions has been awarded the contract to carry out capital dredging works for the Onslow Marine Support Base Channel Dredging project, which will see the modification and expansion of the Beadon Creek Harbor Approach Channel, Swing Basin and Berth Pocket.

Boskalis Wins $45M Channel Widening Deal

Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. (Boskalis) won a contract for the widening of the Port Adelaide Outer Harbor shipping channel in Australia. The project was awarded by port owner and operator Flinders Ports, and the contract is worth approximately $45m.Boskalis will widen the shipping channel by 40 meters to 170 meters and extend the turning basin to accommodate the larger and more efficient Post Panamax container ships which are increasingly dominating global containerized cargo transport. The expanded channel will also accommodate larger cruise ships.An estimated amount of 1.5 million cubic meters of mainly sand and clay material will be removed with a trailing suction hopper dredger and a large backhoe dredger. The project will be executed in the second half of 2019.

Australia Opens Up Opportunities for UK Shipping

A major investment in new frigates and submarines by the Australian government has created long-term opportunities for UK and European businesses with relevant intellectual property and expertise, said Moore Stephens. This summer the Australian government awarded UK firm BAE Systems a contract to build nine next-generation frigates – known as the ‘Future Frigates’ project – worth A$35 billion, said a research report written by Moore Stephens' Michael Simms & Grant Miles.The programme, which will run for over 20 years, will create around 4,000 direct Australian jobs and give a particular boost to South Australia and the shipyards of Port Adelaide. Construction of the frigates is scheduled to begin in Adelaide from 2020, with the first vessels delivered in 2027 and the last by 2042.

Plans for Another South Australia LNG Import Plant in the Works

A private firm is looking to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) to South Australia starting in 2020, around the same time as two other proposed import projects, looking to fill a supply gap as domestic gas gets sucked into LNG exports.Venice Energy, set up by former BHP Billiton executives, plans to submit a development application to the South Australian government within the next month to park a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in Port Adelaide, Managing Director Kym Winter-Dewhirst said.If regulatory approvals come through by March, construction could begin by June 2019, he told Reuters in an interview. Kingston Council Takes Delivery of Damen CSD 350

Kingston District Council, in partnership with the Cape Jaffa Development Group, has recently taken delivery of a Cutter Suction Dredger (CSD) from Damen Shipyards Group. The CSD350 will be used to dredge along the breakwater at Cape Jaffa, the Cape Jaffa marina and within Maria Creek Boat Launch Facility in Kingston. This is the only dredger owned by a South Australian council, and has been the most significant purchase Kingston District Council has undertaken in terms of the logistics involved in an overseas purchase, transportation and assembly.

Saab Supplies First Common Operating Picture to Flinders Ports

Defence and security company Saab has deployed its first Common Operating Picture (COP): an extension of Saab’s KleinPort port management information system (PMIS) that makes ports more efficient and competitive. As of November 1st 2016, Flinders Ports in Australia began live utilization of the KleinPort COP. KleinPort COP gives all authorized port stakeholders an easily accessible, map-based overview of their port. The information is layered to allow users to select only the data relevant to their area of responsibility.

More than 100 Shipbuilders Lose Jobs at ASC

South Australian defence shipbuilding company ASC has axed 101 blue collar jobs from its facility at Osborne near Port Adelaide. The submarine and shipbuilder ASC has let go 101 contractors from its facility in Adelaide in a move it says will increase productivity on its air warfare destroyer program. "This contractor management activity is normal practice for projects of this nature and has, and will, occur several times over the life of the project," it said in a statement. “On the basis of continuous improvement, ASC is making enhancements to the way it undertakes production activities, including changing the sequencing of work. Flinders Adelaide Orders Liebherr Container Cranes

Liebherr Container Cranes has recently signed a contract for the supply of two ship to shore container cranes to Flinders Adelaide Container Terminal in South Australia. The container cranes were purchased as part of a 30-year strategic plan to boost service levels at the Port Adelaide Terminal. The cranes have an operational outreach of 50m and a safe working load of 65 metric tons under twin lift spreader and 80 metric tons under hook beam. The lift height over rail is 38 m, the span is 25.3 m and the back reach is 20 m.

The recently developed Damen ASD Tug 2411 is a real push-pull ASD Tug, designed primarily for working over the bow. This tug is a powerful 4,200 kW vessel that develops a bollard pull of around 70,000 kg; full ahead to full astern in a ship's length, turning around in 10 seconds. With the introduction of the Damen ASD Tug 2411, Damen Shipyards has put a new type of port tug on the market: very compact, with an enormous bollard pull. The prototype of this boat (yard number 512201) was built at Damen Shipyards Changde in China for stock and as a demonstration model, but before delivery the boat was sold to an Australian shipping company and named Barunga.

South Australian Ports Sale Faces Political Storm

The South Australian government expects strong bidder interest in its planned $120 million sale of the state's main ports, but the privatization is facing a political storm. The planned trade sale of the South Australian Ports Corporation has agitated a range of groups, from influential grain growers to the militant dockers union and farmers and tourism operators on the Kangaroo Island resort. The government has seen strong level of interest in the ports at Port Adelaide, Port Lincoln, Port Giles, Thevanard, Klein Point, Wallaroo, and Port Pirie. Hutchison Whampoa, Infrastructure investment group Infratil Australia Ltd., graingrower group South Australian Cooperative Bulk Handling (SACBH), P&O Ports, transport group Toll Holdings Ltd., and Mersey Docks & Harbor Co.

Australian Port Bid Pending

The lead sale consultant for the sell-off of South Australia state's main ports was on Tuesday confident of a good outcome as two final bids were evaluated, but said a final decision was still weeks, if not months away. James Hatherley, a director with Arthur Andersen, confirmed that two final bids had been lodged this month for the group of six ports but said the evaluation process was complex as the new owner was required to build a dedicated deep sea grain wharf at the 18-berth capital city facility at Port Adelaide. "We got offers in on (July 9), we've been evaluating them and the government will be assessing that evaluation pretty shortly," Hatherley said. "There's not going to be an announcement until we've signed the contract.
