Atlantic Marine Executive To Head SCA

Herschel T. Vinyard, Jr., Vice President of Atlantic Marine Holding Company, was elected Chairman of the Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA). Mr. Shipbuilding & Repair Co., Inc. Cherrie Felder, Channel Shipyards, New Orleans was elected Vice Chairwoman. SCA is the largest and most broadly-based national trade association representing the U.S. shipyard industry. SCA members build, repair and service America's fleet of commercial and small and mid-sized government vessels. The Council represents 52 companies that own and operate over 120 shipyards in 23 states, with facilities on all three U.S. coasts, the Great Lakes and the inland waterways system. SCA also represents 28 affiliate members that provide goods and services to the shipyard industry.

The teaming of Austal Ships and Bender Shipbuilding to construct, from the ground up, a world-class aluminum vessel construction facility in Mobile, Ala., highlights the level of investment mid-tier U.S. yards have made in the past five years. Austal, which is well regarded for its fast craft design and construction prowess, will have at its disposal arguably one of the finest plate production facilities in the country, as well as access to a market for its signature craft, which is seemingly poised to boom. The two companies, however found that through a melding of similar ideas — both on a philosophical and financial level — that they could assimilate their cultural and business practices to form what aspires to become the largest aluminum shipbuilding company in the U.S. — Austal USA.

Austal USA Becomes Part of Mobile Skyline

Walpert Appointed SCA Director Emeritus

The Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) selected Harvey B. Walpert to be the first ever Director Emeritus of SCA in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the maritime industry. Bruce Croushore, Vice President of Bender Shipbuilding & Repair Co., Inc. of Mobile, AL and past Chairman of SCA, presented the award during the SCA Fall Meeting in Amelia Island, FL on September 29, 2005. Mr. Walpert’s shipbuilding experience includes 22 years at Electric Boat Corporation, a division of General Dynamics, and 22 years at Halter Marine Group (currently VT Halter Marine, Inc.). He has served in his current position as a Senior Defense Advisor for Bender for more than 5 years.
