In the more than two years since its founding, Mississippi-based TY Offshore, the former Trinity Offshore, has invested in a new yard in Gulfport and repaired its storm-damaged New Orleans holdings. The company has doubled its capacity and racked up new orders, president and CEO John Dane III said. TY Offshore designs and builds offshore barges, tugs, oilfield-support vessels and spill-response and patrol vessels. The company's new name, adopted in late June, should make business simpler. “We decided to rebrand for two reasons,” Dane said.

According to a September 12 report from the Associated Press, Coast Guard official said the 300-ton device that failed to stop the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill after a rig exploded has arrived at a NASA facility in Louisiana for analysis. Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) delivered two ships to the U.S. Navy this week at its Gulf Coast shipyards in Pascagoula, Miss. and Avondale, La. Company and Navy officials signed documents officially transferring custody of the Aegis guided missile destroyer Dewey (DDG 105) in Pascagoula on Monday, Aug. 17 and the amphibious transport dock ship New York (LPD 21) at the New Orleans facility on Friday, Aug. 21. Trinity Yachts, L.L.C., through its wholly owned subsidiary, Trinity Offshore, L.L.C., has delivered the first of two aluminum 82 ft. patrol craft it is building in New Orleans under a sub-contract to United States Marine, Inc., (U.S.M.I.) of Gulfport. The craft design is similar to those built for United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM) in the late 1990’s by the Trinity Marine Group. These vessels are still in service today. The first hull was recently delivered to U.S.M.I. for outfitting and the second hull is scheduled for delivery to U.S.M.I. in late March 2009.

The amphibious transport dock ship New Orleans (LPD 18) sailed away from Northrop Grumman Corporation's New Orleans facility early Monday morning for her builder's sea trial. The 684-ft. ship sailed down the Mississippi River past the New Orleans skyline en route to the Gulf of Mexico where she will undergo testing of all the ship's systems while at sea. Following sea trial, shipbuilders will continue to work final details in preparation for the U.S. Navy's Board of Inspection and Survey's acceptance sea trial scheduled later this year. The ship is scheduled to be delivered in early 2007.

According to the AP, with the next hurricane season two weeks away, Northrop Grumman Ship Systems has made changes in its plans to protect its coastal shipbuilding facilities and recover from a storm as powerful as Hurricane Katrina, a company official said Tuesday. Northrop Grumman, which bills itself as the world's largest military shipbuilder, will evacuate workers and start securing its facilities in Pascagoula, Gulfport and New Orleans at least 24 to 36 hours earlier than it typically did for past hurricanes, officials said. Vehicles and equipment will be moved to higher ground. Water, food, generators and gasoline will be stockpiled in greater quantities. Fewer workers will stay behind to ride out the storm.

United States Marine, Inc., began the new year with a ribbon cutting ceremony at its new facility in Gulfport, Miss. As a result of the damage inflicted by hurricane Katrina to the New Orleans division, USMI relocated their facilities to Gulfport. The new facility has enabled USMI to resume normal production and service operations. The new facility is located at 10011 Lorraine Road in Gulfport. USMI plans to also return to the New Orleans facility as an added production facility once the infrastructure returns to eastern New Orleans. The actual ribbon cutting was performed by Tom Dreyfus, the Chairman and founder of USMI.
