Offshore Expansion: With Growth Comes Wage Pressure

Higher salaries paid in the expanding offshore sector are putting wage pressure on other industry segments like classification societies and port state administrations, employment consultant Spinnaker Consulting says. “With demand for personnel continuing to grow in the offshore sector, the wage gap has widened with other parts of the industry, who may in some cases only be able to offer salaries that are fixed by government employers,” says Spinnaker Chairman Phil Parry. Having said that, Parry warns that in Europe offshore expertise may itself be in short supply if more is not done in the future to provide a level playing field for offshore industry workers.

Spinnaker Cautions Shipping Employers Over Foreign Workers' Rights

Maritime recruitment specialist, Spinnaker Consulting has warned shipping firms that they could face legal action if they do not apply UK standards to foreign workers. Overseas workers who spend some working time in the UK qualify for the same employment protection rights as resident UK workers. Writing in the latest issue of Changing Course, Spinnaker's monthly e-mail newsletter, managing director Phil Parry says, "A London employment tribunal ruled last month that foreign workers can claim rights under English employment law if they have spent some of their time working in the UK. The decision arises out of legal changes made in 1999 implementing an EU directive on the posting of workers.

Spinnaker: London faces Seafarer Shortage

Maritime recruitment specialist, Spinnaker Consulting, says maritime employers in London face a shortage of ex-seafarers willing to join them. High housing costs and static salaries are making it harder for seafarers to accept jobs in London. Spinnaker Reveals Radical Pay Changes

Maritime recruitment specialist, Spinnaker Consulting, has warned that radical pay structure changes for UK shipbrokers are resulting in brokers wanting to move out of competitive broking. for competitive shipbrokers. The arranging for transport by sea or the buying and selling of things needed for ships that sail from port to port are among the world's oldest professions. Many ship owners, operators or managers still conduct business the old-fashioned way, building and maintaining close and longstanding relationships with suppliers or customers. While the dot-com craze of a few years ago has passed, E-business is revolutionizing several important business processes in the maritime industry. Computers can aid in the design and construction of vessels, and the Internet can be used to transmit design information and changes instantaneously.

Maritime recruitment specialist Spinnaker Consulting has reported that despite general reports of a slowdown in the world economy, recruitment in the shipping, offshore and transport markets remains buoyant.
