Nord Stream Breaches a Stark Reminder of Undersea Infrastructure Vulnerabilities

On the night of September 26, near the end of the calm season on the Baltic, a broiling kilometer-wide circle disturbed the face of the sea and a huge mass of methane erupted into the air. The gas formed a cloud that crossed Europe, in what’s considered the greatest single release of this potent greenhouse gas ever recorded.It was caused by four breaches of Russia’s Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines, located in or near the territorial seas of Denmark and Sweden. Seismologists detected explosions at a depth of 70-90 meters on the seabed.

Wärtsilä's Engines and Electrical Solutions for Australian RoRo Newbuild

Finland-based marine engine maker Wärtsilä said Tuesday it would deliver main and auxiliary engines, fuel storage tanks, gas handling equipment and electrical systems for a new RoRo being built for Australian operator SeaRoad Shipping.The 210 meter-long vessel is being built at the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) shipyard in Germany. The RoRo vessel will operate primarily on LNG fuel.The vessel will be powered by two Wärtsilä 46DF dual-fuel main engines and three Wärtsilä 20DF dual-fuel auxiliary engines.

Alcatel Submarine Networks Bags Contract from Equinor

Cambodia, China Deal For Submarine Cable

The Cambodian government signed a $70 million investment agreement with a Chinese-owned telecommunication infrastructure provider on Wednesday to connect Cambodia to a 25,000-km underwater fiber-optic network spanning three continents. The Ministry of Post and Telecommunication (MPT) signed a 25-year concession agreement with Cambodia Fiber Optic Cable Network (CFOCN), on 2 March to build a landing station in Sihanoukville and lay an underwater fibre-optic cable that patches into the existing AAE-1 cable, one of the main high-speed data conduits linking Asian, African and European countries. The project will enable Cambodia for the first time an independent international bandwidth exports, so it is high hopes.

KT to Manage Massive Submarine Cable Network

Korean Telecommunications provider KT has been named the key operator of the world's largest submarine network cable, New Cross Pacific (NCP). Korea's dominant fixed-line operator said it will run a network center to control the submarine cable which helps connect network systems in Asia-Pacific countries to the North American region. The company said it will start operation of the 14,000-kilometer-long NCP cable in December 2017. The purpose of the NCP Project is to form a submarine cable network with a data processing capacity of about 80 Tbps across the Pacific Ocean. "KT will play a central role as a global traffic hub with a network operation center (NOC) in Busan," Korea Times quoted Oh Seong-mok, executive vice president of KT's network division, as saying.

Imtech to Supply Electronics Package on Helgoland Ferry

Fassmer shipyard, located in Berne in Lower Saxony, and AG Ems, which is the Emden-based parent company of Cassen Eils shipping line, have signed the construction contract for the new Helgoland ferry. Imtech Marine received the order for the whole range of electrical systems and electronics. Apart from the engineering, the order contains the technical coordination and the project management. Imtech will provide the ship automation, the switchgears, the motor starters, distribution panels and lighting as well as the complete cable network.

MAN B&W Hits New Milestone in Emission Control

MAN B&W Diesel A/S, Holeby, Denmark, has recently tested and supplied a package consisting of two 8L21/31 and two 6L21/31 GenSets. These GenSets will power an advanced Diesel-Electric research vessel for the State Ministry of Education & Science of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. The vessel, Maria S. Merian, is now under construction at the Lürssen-Krögerwerft, Rendsburg, Germany, and is scheduled for delivery towards the end of the year. ‘Blue Angel’ is a German standard for environmentally friendly technology, which covers a wide range of subjects. In the marine world, ‘Blue Angel’ has a comprehensive set of rules, including exhaust emission from diesel engines. ‘Blue Angel’ only allows a NOx emission of 80% of the IMO limits.

Other equipment commissioned includes a winch measurement system as well as an automated Geamar 120 ISL system for centralized ship management and control using a series of operator workstations which collectively provide up to 2,500 measuring points in addition to automated alarm functions.
