New Wave Data Underpins Ship Structural Integrity
The loss of the Stellar Daisy in 2017 was a tragic reminder of the importance of wave data to ship design and operation. The vessel sank in the South Atlantic Ocean, with 22 of 24 crewmembers lost. The structural failure of the vessel was attributed to several factors including material fatigue and the forces imposed on the hull as a result of the weather conditions.Survey requirements for some vessel types have since been tightened, but even before this tragedy, work was underway to evaluate the wave data used to determine ship structural integrity requirements.
Four TEREX Mobile Cranes for Asia Pacific
Terex Port Solutions (TPS) continues to systematically strengthen its position in the Asia Pacific region with four new mobile harbour cranes. Two additional Terex Gottwald Model 6 mobile harbour cranes from the large crane family, ordered earlier this year, have been in use in the Port of Napier on New Zealand’s North Island since November. On 4 December, Northport Ltd. (Northport) not only officially launched its container hardstand area, but also a Terex Gottwald Model 4 mobile harbour crane from the medium-sized crane family at Marsden Point, also situated on the North Island. NZ Report: Human Error to Blame for Rena Grounding
New Zealand's Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) published its final report into the grounding of containership Rena in October 2011. The TAIC’s investigation found that the grounding was a result of improper crew practices, and that equipment/machinery malfunction played no part in the incident. According to the report, the Liberian-registered containership Rena had left the New Zealand port of Napier at 10:20 a.m. on October 4, 2011 bound for the New Zealand port of Tauranga. The master had given an estimated time of arrival at the Tauranga pilot station of 3 a.m.
Strategic Marine Wins Tug Deal
Western Australian shipbuilder Strategic Marine has broken new ground by winning a contract to build a 23.9m new generation compact tug – the first tugboat signing in the company’s history. The vessel, which has a 60 ton bollard pull, has been ordered by the Port of Napier – another breakthrough since the Port becomes Strategic Marine’s first New Zealand client. The steel vessel, which will have a deadweight of 105 tons and a free-running speed of 12 knots, will be powered by a Voith Water Tractor.
