World's First: Japanese Firms to Looking to Build Sustainable Bulk Carriers for Copper Transport from Chile

Japan's NYK Line said Thursday its NYK Bulk & Project Carriers Ltd. (NBP), Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (OSHIMA), and Sumitomo Corporation (SUMITOMO) had signed a memorandum of understanding to study, design, and construct the world’s first Handymax bulk carrier (ammonia dual fuel type) dedicated to the transport of copper products, that will reduce CO2 emissions to zero.The MoU signing comes just a year after Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile (CODELCO), a Chilean state-owned company and one of the world's leading copper producers, and NYK Bulk & Project Carriers Ltd.

Robbers Pull Off Multimillion-dollar Copper Heist in Chilean Port

Chilean authorities said on Wednesday they were investigating a violent heist in Chile's main seaport where thieves stole several shipping containers filled with copper belonging to state-owned giant Codelco.Juan Carlos Catalan, the local prosecutor, said in a statement that ten armed men entered the San Antonio port early on Tuesday morning, attacked workers and stole 13 containers, 12 of which had copper."There was one guard and four workers that (the assailants)tied up and beat and left locked up…

Chile Exporters Fret as Customs Strike Continues

A customs strike in Chile that began last week has started to affect exports and imports, although miners in the top copper producer said this week they have not yet been significantly impacted. The strike by customs officials, who say they want the government to approximately double their workforce, began on May 20, and the union says it will continue indefinitely until an agreement is reached. It rejected a government proposal for a smaller increase in the workforce at the weekend. "We have had dialogue but it has been tense ... what we want is a signal that this will be resolved in the short term but that hasn't arrived," Jorge Thibaut, secretary general of the national association of customs workers (ANFACH) said to journalists on Wednesday.

Hamburg Sud's First Chilean Christening

Hamburg Sud conducted its first Chilean Christening in its 137-year history. Hamburg Sud has christened a container ship in Chile, the ceremony took place in Valparaiso on 9 January 2009. The Cap Graham is one of a series of three identical 4,294 TEU charter vessels of Norddeutsche Reederei H. Schuldt. Together with her two sister ships, the Cap Gilbert and Cap Gregory, as well as Hamburg Sud's Bahia class vessels, the Cap Graham is sailing in Sling 1 of the Hamburg Sud liner service between Asia and South America West Coast. Sponsor of the Cap Graham was Elizabeth McPherson Cisternas, Corporate Executive Vice President Logistics and Marketing Services for Codelco Chile, the largest producer and exporter of copper worldwide.

Suez to Build LNG Terminal in Chile

Utility Suez (NYSE:SZEZY) said its energy division, in conjunction with copper producer Codelco, is to construct a liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification terminal in Mejillones, in the region of Antofagasta, Northern Chile. The group said investment in the project, to be owned by newly created company GNL Mejillones SA -- 50 per cent owned by each of Suez and Codelco -- will amount to $500m. In a first phase between 2009-2012, the project will see the construction of a jetty and an on-shore LNG regasification terminal with a send-out capacity of 5.5 mln cubic metres of gas, sufficient to produce 1,100 megawatts (MW) of electricity. An LNG vessel, with a storage capacity of approximately 135,000 cubic metres, will be permanently moored and serve as a floating storage.
