'World's First Hybrid Superyacht'

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

January 30, 2015

Developed by Dutch shipbuilders Feadship, the 83.5m Savannah is touted as the world's first hybrid super yacht. Vessel is 30% more fuel efficient than similar sized counterparts, claims the company.

The eco-friendly super yacht uses a blend of a single diesel engine, three gensets, batteries, propeller and an azimuth thruster.

The model comes as a result of the 2010 Feadship Future Concept Breathe, demonstrating a cleaner and more cost-effective mode of propulsion.

With a dynamic and streamlined hull shape, Savannah uses one efficient medium-speed Wartsila main engine instead of two higher-rev diesel motors, a single central propeller shaft installation on the centreline and three gensets. The integration of these electro-mechanical components should result in fuel savings of 30 per cent in comparison to other similarly sized yachts.

Speaking about the development, the yacht owner’s project manager Ted McCumber said: “It is not the individual technologies used on Savannah that are new in the yachting world – it is the way they have been combined.”

Due to privacy agreements the interior remains a mystery; however Feadship has shared a few words on this equally amazing artifice. "Savannah has an ‘underwater lounge’ where guests can watch the fish outside or turn around and observe the fun and games in the nine-metre swimming pool. The room, which also converts into a cinema, is another first for a superyacht and features especially thick glass due to its position in the hull."
