Crowley has named offshore wind veteran Christy Guthman as vice president of business development for its Wind Services business as the company grows in the clean, sustainable energy sector.Guthman most recently served as executive general manager of sales and commercial operations for GE Offshore Wind. During her tenure there, she built the company’s North American sales, marketing and supply chain strategy. Guthman also worked as General Electric’s senior sales director for the western U.S.

A company that planned to build a coal export terminal in the Pacific Northwest to ship western U.S. coal to Asian markets sued the state of Washington on Wednesday for blocking construction last year. Lighthouse Resources Inc filed a lawsuit in federal court against Washington Governor Jay Inslee and two state regulators for allegedly violating the U.S. Constitution's commerce clause by denying permits to allow the company to ship coal mined in Wyoming, Montana and other western states through its proposed Millennium Bulk Terminal to clients in Japan and South Korea.

The West Gulf Maritime Association (WGMA) is urging its members with ships arriving at any port in the western US Gulf to participate in the Menhaden survey. The annual Menhaden spawn (typically April through October) has created challenges for ships transiting local waterways, namely a potentially dangerous loss of propulsion caused by engine overheating resulting from sea chest strainers being clogged by hundreds of these small fish. Drought pressures will increase in California and western areas of the United States this spring even as the dry season begins, the government's Climate Prediction Center said on Thursday. "Periods of record warmth in the West and not enough precipitation during the rainy season cut short drought relief in California this winter and prospects for above-average temperatures this spring may make the situation worse," Jon Gottschalck, chief of the Operational Prediction Branch at the Climate Prediction Center, said in issuing its spring outlook. The center, a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, also said rivers in western New York and eastern New England have the greatest risk of spring flooding in part because of heavy snowpack coupled with possible spring rain.

Providing auxiliary hydrogen power to docked or anchored ships may soon be added to the list of ways in which hydrogen fuel cells can provide efficient, emissions-free energy. Hydrogen fuel cells are already powering mobile lighting systems, forklifts, emergency backup systems and light-duty trucks, among other applications. Now, researchers at Sandia National Laboratories have found that hydrogen fuel cells may be both technically feasible and commercially attractive as a clean, quiet and efficient power source for ships at berth, replacing on-board diesel generators.

Iron ore exports start up at Long Beach: Western U.S. mines supply the raw material for shipment to Asia. Officials gathered dockside to celebrate the exporting of iron ore from the Port of Long Beach – a promising new line of business developed by SA Recycling, a longtime exporter of scrap metal. SA Recycling is working with CML Metals Corp. to send iron ore from mines in Utah, California, Arizona and Nevada to meet the growing demand for raw materials in Asia’s booming steel industry. The iron ore exports, which started up this spring, are the first in 40 years from the Port.

BP Marine and Houston Marine Services (HMS) are joining forces to begin a new chapter in ship bunkering in the western U.S. Gulf. Effective, April 2, HMS became BP's dedicated logistics provider in an area from Brownsville, Texas to Lake Charles, La. BP Marine will serve as the marketing arm for bunker sales on behalf of the joint venture and will supply bunker fuel across a broad geographic area of the Gulf.

General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics, delivered a fourth and final double-hulled oil tanker, the Alaskan Legend, to BP Shipping Ltd. The Alaskan Legend will depart San Diego on August 21, to join its NASSCO-built sister ships already in service: the Alaskan Frontier, Alaskan Explorer and Alaskan Navigator. The ship is capable of carrying up to 1.3 million barrels of crude oil and will operate between Alaska and western U.S. ports. The ship is double-hulled, diesel-electric powered, equipped with 20 separate cargo tanks, and has all of its cargo transfer piping inside the hull rather than on its decks to reduce the chance of accidental spills. NASSCO began constructing the ship in October 2004.

General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics, held a ceremony to name the fourth and final double-hulled oil tanker it is building for BP Shipping Ltd., the Alaskan Legend. The ceremony took place at the NASSCO shipyard. Shirley Anne Massey, the wife of Morehouse College president and BP board member Dr. Walter Massey, was the honoree at the ceremony and is the ship’s sponsor. As ship’s sponsor, Mrs. Massey named the ship and broke the traditional bottle of champagne against it. Construction of the Alaskan Legend began in October 2004.
