Crowley Breaks Ground in San Diego for All-electric Tugboat Charging Station

Crowley and the Port of San Diego broke ground for the shoreside charging station designed to provide clean energy for the company’s forth-coming zero-emissions tugboat, eWolf.The charging station is a microgrid charging facility that will allow vessels to recharge quickly while reducing peak loads on the community energy grid. It is equipped with two containerized energy storage systems provided by Corvus Energy. The station is designed to operate on off-peak hours from the community’s energy grid, and it includes a solar power array to support renewable energy use.

UK to Turn Migrant Boats Back to France

Britain has approved plans to turn away boats illegally carrying migrants to its shores, deepening a rift with France over how to deal with a surge of people risking their lives by trying to cross the Channel in small dinghies.Hundreds of small boats have attempted the journey from France to England this year, across one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.Border officials will be trained to force boats away from British waters but will deploy the new tactic only when they deem it safe…

Kelvin Hughes first launched its dedicated drone detection system earlier this year incorporating SharpEye SxV 360 degree radar and electro optic cameras with the Single Mast Solution (SMS) security system. At DSEI 2017 Kelvin Hughes has announced it will be demonstrating the next evolution of its drone detection and tracking technology. The SMS-D (‘D’ meaning drone) is a dedicated drone detection and tracking system now featuring a thermal camera and video tracker that acquires the drone target using the initial radar detection information.

Partnership Offers Real-time Maritime Tracking

Satellite Automatic Identification System (AIS) data services provider exactEarth Ltd.and space, geospatial and remote sensing solutions company Harris Corporation have formed an alliance to provide a new level of AIS data service that will deliver real-time global coverage for maritime vessel tracking. The new service will leverage the persistent global coverage and real-time connectivity of the Iridium NEXT constellation through the implementation of 58 hosted payloads covering the Maritime VHF frequency band. Compatibility testing of the hosted payload with the Iridium satellites has been completed and the first launch is scheduled for early 2016 with the completed constellation expected in 2017.

Vic-Press Receives Five New Type Approvals

Victaulic, a manufacturer of mechanical pipe-joining systems, has received type approvals from American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Bureau Veritas (BV), Det Norske Veritas (DNV), Korean Register and Lloyd’s Register for Vic-Press, a flame-free press system for joining small-diameter stainless steel pipe. With these new approvals, more shipbuilders will be able to take advantage of Vic-Press as a means of joining stainless steel pipe in new-vessel construction, retrofit and repair operations. The system is approved for use in class III piping systems for marine and offshore applications.

GPS Signal Jammers Stymied by Exelis

Exelis' Signal Sentry 1000 device detected and located GPS interference sources in 3-D by using longitude, latitude and altitude, during recent field tests at the Vidsel Test Range in Sweden. Taking advantage of the range’s remote location, Exelis was able to conduct tests of its Signal Sentry 1000 product using controlled jamming. The test was conducted without disrupting the GPS signal relied upon by civilian and military operations outside of the test range location. The test employed eight sensors positioned in an array pattern and showed that Signal Sentry was able to successfully detect and locate the jamming source. Autronica Highlights Gas Detection for Dual Fuel LNG Vessels

With the number of vessels using dual fuel/LNG propulsion systems growing steadily, Autronica Fire and Security is focusing on the importance of gas detection in this sector during Nor-Shipping 2013. LNG as a fuel can provide lower bunkering costs and emissions, in addition to less wear on engines, however, LNG propulsion systems must be monitored by reliable gas detection technology to ensure safety of crew and vessel should a failure occur. New Offshore Oil & Gas Leak Detection Technology

Sonardyne Asia Pte Ltd. to launch ALDS (Automatic Leak Detection Sonar} at upcoming OSEA Singapore expo. ALDS has been designed to continuously and automatically detect and localise oil and gas leaks below 1 barrel per day in excess of 500 metres whilst eliminating transient acoustic targets that could trigger false alarms. Sonardyne’s ALDS is designed to continuously monitor one billion cubic feet of water for leaks around subsea oil and gas assets. Capable of 360° coverage, it can detect leaks at rates of less than one barrel per day at ranges in excess of 500 metres in deep water.

Andrew Altendorf is the CEO and majority owner of Acme Environmental Inc. Acme’s history spans almost 50 years and the firm is recognized as a pioneer in the manufacture of oil spill containment booms and other oil spill recovery items. A U.S. Coast Guard classified OSRO, Acme and Altendorf support numerous customers in Oklahoma and the Midwest with their emergency response. Z Backscatter Cargo Inspection for Saudi Arabia

American Science and Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASEI), received its first order for a Z Backscatter Van (ZBV) from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The ZBV system will be used to screen vehicles at high threat security locations for explosive threats and contraband. Lawrence Livermore, VeriTainer Agreement

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and VeriTainer Corporation have entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA). The CRADA will be used to refine and enhance VeriTainer’s patented crane mounted scanning (CMS) technology. The CRADA will be in place for three-and-a-half years and require approximately $4m in funding. LLNL will work in cooperation with VeriTainer’s scientists and engineers to enhance both gamma and neutron detection sensitivity, while maintaining the capabilities of VeriTainer’s CMS. The system has been operated for the past four years in field tests run at three ports and in five different terminals.

DHS Budget Request Up 6.8%

President Bush’s fiscal year 2009 budget request for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) represents $50.5 billion in funding, which is an increase of 6.8 percent over the 2008 fiscal year level – excluding funds provided in emergency supplemental funding. The request targets five areas, detailed in the following release of information from the DHS. The Department of Homeland Security’s main priority is to prevent terrorist attacks against the nation and to protect our nation from dangerous people. DHS will continue to prevent the entry of terrorists while facilitating the legitimate flow of people by strengthening border security efforts and continuing to gain effective control of America’s borders.

Real-World Test Of Backscatter Tech

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), in consultation with the U.S. Coast Guard, will begin testing advanced explosives detection technology today as part of the Secure Automobile Inspection Lanes (SAIL) test project. The program will conduct explosives screening on automobiles boarding the Cape May-Lewes Ferry in Cape May, N.J. The 30-day test uses a mobile screening van, fitted with an advanced non-invasive screening technology called Z Backscatter. Passengers will briefly exit their vehicle and then the screening van will slowly drive next to the car or truck and screen for explosives. The entire process takes less than a minute, and travelers will not be delayed or miss their ferry due to the program.

SFI Operational in U.K., Pakistan and Honduras

Southampton Container Terminals, United Kingdom, Port Qasim, Pakistan (both managed by DP World) and Puerto Cortez, Honduras will become the first seaports to implement the Secure Freight Initiative (SFI) beginning October 12 by scanning all maritime containers destined for the U.S. for nuclear or other radiological materials. These ports fulfill the requirements set out in the Security and Accountability For Every (SAFE) Port Act of 2006, which establishes a program that couples Non-Intrusive Inspection (NII) and radiation detection technology. Data from these systems is then provided to U.S. officials at U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s National Targeting Center for analysis.

Canada to Monitor NW Passage Traffic

Sea traffic in the famed Northwest Passage will soon be monitored by underwater listening devices to be installed by Canada to bolster its disputed claim over the Arctic. Canada's military will start keeping tabs on trespassers -- ships and submarines -- in the region as early as mid-2008, said public broadcaster CBC. The detection technology is to be installed at Gascoyne Inlet on Devon Island, near one of the main arteries of the passage that links the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, the CBC said, citing unnamed sources. Canada is at odds with Russia, Denmark, Norway and the United States over 460,000 square miles of Arctic seabed. Each nation is claiming overlapping sections of the sea floor, believed to hold 25 percent of the world's undiscovered oil and gas reserves.

New York to Conduct Explosives Detection Test

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), in partnership with the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT), will begin testing advanced explosives detection technology today as part of the agency's Security Enhancement and Capabilities Augmentation Program (SEACAP). During the three-week pilot program, TSA will conduct explosives screening on passengers boarding the Staten Island Ferry at the St. George Terminal in Staten Island using passive millimeter wave screening equipment. The purpose of the project is to test the performance of new technologies to detect explosives while maintaining efficient passenger operations for high volume commuter ferries.

Adesta Helps Secure Port of Baltimore

Adesta LLC, an Omaha, Neb.-based systems integrator, signed a $5.5 million contract with the Maryland Port Administration to design and install a sophisticated security system at the Port of Baltimore. The project will include the installation of a remote video surveillance system as well as enhancements to terminal perimeter security. The expected completion date for the project is fall 2006. The system will provide the Port with total perimeter security and includes a fully scalable communications and electronic security network. The perimeter security measures include closed circuit television, video analytics by VistaScape Security Systems, and force protection for all terminals located at the Port.
