Two Bodies Recovered after S.Korea Ship Goes Missing in Taiwan Strait

Taiwan has recovered two bodies after a ship carrying six South Koreans went missing in the Taiwan Strait, and search and rescue operations are underway, the Taiwanese and South Korean governments said on Friday.Taiwan authorities have said they received distress signals from the Kyoto 1 at around 9:50 a.m. (0050 GMT) on Thursday from a location about 18 miles (29 km) west of the island, the foreign ministry in Seoul said, adding that all six people aboard were South Korean nationals.The Sierra Leone-flagged, 322-ton ship was on its way to Indonesia's Batam port from the South Korean city of Busan while towing the Kyoto 2 tender vessel…

Taiwan Resumes Ocean Cruise Amid Pandemic

Taiwan resumed an island-hopping ocean cruise on Sunday, joining a handful of places in the world to restart voyages after the coronavirus pandemic brought the industry to a virtual standstill.Some 900 holiday makers are adapting to new safety measures when boarding Genting Hong Kong’s Explorer Dream embarking from Taiwan’s northern Keelung port. The company now offers trips of up to five days from Taiwan to its scenic outlying islands of Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu.The cruise resumption is part of a government effort to boost a tourism industry badly hit by the pandemic.

Three in Four Cruise Passengers in the World Will Soon be Chinese

Almost three-quarters of all cruise passengers in the future could be Chinese, according to research by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB). The study reveals a potential 83 million cruise passengers in seven source markets within Greater China. This figure is four times the current number of cruise passengers world-wide. Hong Kong, with its connectivity to the Pearl River Delta, Central China and Taiwan by air, high speed rail and land transportation via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, is looking at a cruise potential of 54 million passengers. The study also reveals that the make-up of these passengers is younger and more family-oriented than cruise passengers in traditional source markets such as North America and Europe, where they tend to be older, retired achievers.

Taiwan's Lighthouses Major Tourist Attractions

The government of Taiwan is planning to open another two lighthouses to the public since such structures have become major tourism attractions in the country, the Maritime and Port Bureau informed. By 2015-end Chimei Yu Lighthouse on Penghu and Fukwei Chiao Lighthouse in New Taipei City will be added to the country's list of lighthouse tourist attractions. Taiwan has 35 lighthouses, 10 of which are currently open to visitors. The most recent additions to the list of lighthouse tourist sites were Paisha Chia, Lu Tao, Fong Yuan, and Kaomei lighthouses, which were opened to the public over the past two years. Prior to 2013, visitors were allowed into only six of the country's lighthouses -- Eluan Pi, Santiao Chiao, Kaohsiung, Yuweng Tao, Tungchu Tao and Tungyin Tao.

Wrecked LPG Freighter Removed from Taiwan Strait

Following four months  of challenging operations and weather delays, RESOLVE Salvage & Fire, (ASIA) Pte Ltd. has announced completion of the wreck removal of  the freighter LPG OBERON  from the Taiwan Strait. The Oberon, loaded with volatile Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) 1- Butene,  had grounded and sustained extensive hull damage early this year, seven miles from the Penghu archipelago and 30 miles northwest of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Following weeks of preparation and more than seven days of intensive, round-the-clock operations, RESOLVE Salvage & Fire, (ASIA) Pte Ltd. announced that more than 1000 MT of volatile LPG 1- Butene have been removed from the stranded and  wrecked freighter LPG OBERON  in the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan to Open Penghu for Cross-Strait Shipping

Premier Frank Hsieh said August 1 that if all goes well, the outlying island county of Penghu may be opened for direct point-to-point shipping services across the Taiwan Strait on an experimental basis, starting in September at the earliest, Asian Pulse reported. Hsieh made the remarks after attending the inaugural ceremony for Penghu National University - the county's first university. Since the government opened the two frontline islands of Kinmen and Matsu for direct point-to-point shipping service with the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian, some Penghu political figures have been urging the government to open Penghu for similar direct services with a selected Chinese port.

Taiwan Searches For Chinese Sailors

Taiwan on Tuesday searched on for 10 Chinese crew members of a Belize-registered vessel that went missing off the island's southern coast during a killer typhoon, though hopes of finding survivors were fading, officials said. "After 72 hours, chances of finding any survivors are low," said Younger Wu of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications. "The emergency task force had been called off, but we will continue the search until all bodies are accounted for," Wu, who heads the ministry's Navigation & Aviation Department, told a news conference. Typhoon Chebi lashed Taiwan and China over the weekend, killing at least 87 people and injuring 116.
