Navy Awards Contract for Columbia Class Submarine Development

The Navy awarded a $5.1 billion contract to General Dynamics Electric Boat for Integrated Product and Process Development (IPPD) of the Columbia Class submarine Sept. 21. The IPPD contract award is for the design, completion, component and technology development and prototyping efforts for the Columbia Class Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarines (SSBNs). This work will also include United Kingdom unique efforts related to the common missile compartment. "The Columbia class submarine is the most important acquisition program the Navy has today," said Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer. The contract award follows a successful Milestone B (MS B) approval Jan. 4 2017. MS B formally initiated the Columbia Program entry into the Engineering and Manufacturing Development Phase.

NUWC Newport Dedicates New Research Facility

The Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport dedicated a new $24.9 million Virginia Payload Tube Facility (VPTF) with a ribbon cutting today, Wednesday, October 15. The ceremony was followed by an opportunity for businesses with an interest in the technology to tour the facility and learn about its capabilities. Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee, U.S. Senator Jack Reed and U.S. Congressman James Langevin attended the ceremony. “Since forming the Torpedo Station on Goat Island, [NUWC] has been the center of cutting-edge research of undersea technologies,” Reed said.

PEO Submarines Architecture Award

Program Executive Office (PEO) Submarines received the 2009 Defense Enterprise Architecture Achievement Award(DEAA) June 4 during the Department of Defense's (DoD) Enterprise Architecture Conference in St. Louis, Mo. PEO Submarines was recognized for its submarine warfare federated tactical systems (SWFTS) efforts. First awarded in 2008, the DEAA is given annually by the DoD in conjunction with the Association for Enterprise Information (AFEI) to one government and one industry individual and organization for excellence and innovation in developing and deploying enterprise architecture. The award also recognizes achievements which have profound effects on the improvement of operational performance and advancing information sharing capabilities in significant ways.

NNS Wins Sub Development Deal

Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. was awarded on Mar. 31, 2004, a $17,212,146 cost-plus-fixed-fee modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-01-C-2104) to exercise an option for development and design studies, design agent, engineering and technical support, test and evaluation efforts on current and future submarine platforms in support of the program executive office for submarines. Work will be performed in Newport News, Va., and is expected to be completed by March 2006. Contract funds in the amount of $30,000 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, D.C., is the contracting activity.

Tamburrino is New NAVSEA Executive Director

Vice Adm. Philip M. Balisle, commander, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), announced the selection of Pat Tamburrino as the organization's new Executive Director - NAVSEA's senior civilian position. "Pat brings experience doing business with and among the Pentagon senior leaders - both Flag and SES," said Balisle. Tamburrino began his executive career at NAVSEA where he served as the Cost Engineering Leader. He later served as deputy for Program Executive Office for Submarines. He is currently the Asst. Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Resources, Requirements & Assessments). Tamburrino will replace Pete Brown who will retire in May. Brown joined NAVSEA in 1981 and has served as Executive Director since 1998.
