CMA CGM Breaks Tampa Port Vessel Record

Florida's largest port,  Port Tampa Bay has marking a major milestone and partnership with CMA CGM as Port customers, local officials, and business leaders gather to celebrate the inaugural call of the CMA CGM DALILA at The Ports America Terminal.CMA CGM Group, a world leader in shipping and logistics, begin their weekly direct ocean carrier service between Asia and Port Tampa Bay today. CMA CGM's excellent transit times will significantly improve the competitiveness of the region's importers and exporters, transforming Tampa Bay's economic landscape.With a capacity of 8,500 to 9,500 TEUs (container units) per vessel, these are also the largest container ships ever to call at the Port.

Port Tampa Welcomes CMA CGM

Florida's largest port Port Tampa Bay welcome the announcement by the CMA CGM Group, that it will begin serving Port Tampa Bay in late May 2019 on its Pacific Express 3, or PEX3 service.With a presence in 160 countries and a fleet of 506 vessels, CMA CGM serves over 420 ports across the globe and is a member of the Ocean Alliance. Crowley Shipping Fuel to Hurricane Stricken Locales

Eighteen Jones Act petroleum vessels owned and/or operated by Crowley Maritime Corp. have been loaded to discharge gasoline and diesel into Florida ports in the coming few days. The mobilization responds to fuel shortages caused by the unprecedented evacuation of millions of Floridians ahead of Hurricane Irma. The vessels include Crowley’s MT Ohio and Florida, which were among the first tankers to bring fuel into the Port of Tampa on Tuesday along with MT West Virginia in Port Everglades. Fuel is being discharged to all of the major terminals in Florida – Jacksonville, Port Canaveral and Ft.

AAPA, USDOT to Commemorate NM Day Jointly

A little-known annual American commemoration is coming up again on May 22 - National Maritime Day. It was declared by Congress in 1933 to call attention to America’s proud maritime heritage and to honor the men and women who serve and have served as U.S. merchant mariners. It’s also a day to recognize and reflect on the rewards that America’s ports bring the country in terms of jobs, economic development, goods movement and international competitiveness. For the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA)—the unified and recognized voice of seaports in the Americas—National Maritime Day offers the nation’s ports a great opportunity to showcase the value of their facilities, operations and personnel to their respective communities.

Italian Shipper Fined $2.75m for Environmental Crimes

U.S. Carbofin S.p.A., an Italian domiciled company that owned and operated the M/T Marigola was sentenced to pay an overall criminal penalty of $2.75 million for knowingly falsifying the vessel’s oil record book in violation of the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS), announced the Department of Justice Environment and Natural Resources Division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida. During 2013 and 2014, on numerous international voyages, senior members of the crew of the M/T Marigola directed the installation and use of a so-called “magic hose” to dispose of sludge, waste oil and oil-contaminated bilge water directly into the sea bypassing required pollution prevention equipment.

Italian Shipbuilder Pleads Guilty to Environmental Crimes

Hendry Builds New Drydock at Port of Tampa

Hendry Corporation, a shipbuilding and repair facility located at the Port of Tampa has just completed building a new 2,500-ton drydock at its facility located on Port Hendry. The drydock, named the Capt. F.M. Hendry, is capable of lifting ocean going tugs, barges and vessels completely out of the water for inspection and repair. “With the addition of this new drydock we will be able to significantly increase our capabilities and position ourselves strategically for the future,” said Joe Cimino, Vice President of Hendry Corporation.

Port of Oswego Appoints New Executive Director

The Port of Oswego Authority has announced the appointment of Zelko N. Kirincich to the position of Executive Director. He assumed his new responsibilities on January 6, 2014. Mr. Kirincich comes from the Port Authority of Tampa, Florida, where he worked from 1996-2013. He most recently served there as Deputy Port Director and Chief Operating Officer. Prior to his 17 years at the Port of Tampa, Mr. Kirincich worked for 14 years at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, where he specialized in engineering, project management and facilities management. Mr. Kirincich received a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Manhattan College, and a master’s degree in business administration from Manhattan College/Fordham University.

Governor Commits $35 Million for Florida Port Projects

Governor Rick Scott announced at the American Association of Port Authority’s (AAPA) Annual Convention in Orlando a commitment of nearly $35 million for strategic port projects across Florida that will be recommended to the Legislature for the upcoming legislative session. •    Port Canaveral – $9.7 million for development of a container yard. •    Port Everglades – $14.7 million to support the Turning Notch project. •    Port of Tampa – $10.4 million to improve its container yard.

Crowley’s ATB Crew Rescues Man from Tampa Bay

The crew aboard Crowley Maritime Corporation’s articulated tug-barge (ATB) Achievement/650-8 recently performed a heroic rescue of an injured man who was struggling to stay afloat near the base of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay, Fla. The on-watch crew noticed a man bobbing in the water on the port side of the vessel around the same time that emergency radio calls from the St. Petersburg Coast Guard were issued. Crowley’s Allen Williams, AB, responded by immediately throwing the stranded man a life ring and Captain Gus Cramer sounded the man overboard alarm.

Newly Christened ATB Marks Milestone

Crowley Maritime Corporation recently welcomed a new addition to its American-made and operated  fleet of petroleum tank vessels, the 750-class articulated tug-barge (ATB) Legend/750-2. The milestone came exactly five years after Crowley first announced plans to build the 750-class, which is considered one of largest, fastest and safest in the industry. The latest vessel is the second of three in the class, and will transport petroleum products – including gasoline – along the U.S. West, Gulf and East Coasts.

Crowley Maritime Corporation christen the 16,000-horsepower tugboat 'Legend' and 330,000-barrel tank barge 750-2 in Tampa, Florida. Together the vessels comprise the company’s newest articulated-tug-barge  (ATB) and will be used to transport petroleum products between the U.S. Gulf and East Coasts, making regular port calls in Tampa where Crowley currently discharges nearly 163 million gallons of product each month. N. American World Maritime Day Observance features Piracy, Stewardship, Safety

Piracy will be the focus of this year’s North American World Maritime Day Observance being held in Tampa, FL on October 27th followed by a US Coast Guard Missions conference on October 28th which will feature panel discussions on the stewardship, safety and security missions of the Coast Guard. Both events will be held at the Marriott Waterside in Tampa and are free and open to the public. North American regional representatives from industry, government and NGO’s will dialog on these critically important regional issues. The events directly follow the USCG Flag Officer’s conference and Innovation Expo. For the past several years, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has promoted awareness about the maritime community through World Maritime Day.

Hendry Corporation Announces Receipt of $1 Million Marad Grant

Hendry Corporation is proud to announce that it received a $1 Million grant under the Maritime Administration Assistance to Small Shipyards Grant Program. Hendry Corporation appreciates the efforts of Congresswoman Castor, Congressman Nelson, Congressman Bilirakis, and Mayor Bob Buckhorn. The MARAD funds, along with Hendry’s capital contribution of $1.6 Million, will be used to construct a 1200-ton floating dry-dock. The construction will create 25 new high-paying shipyard jobs. Once completed, the new dry-dock will increase Hendry’s capacity and efficiency in servicing its customers, including the United States Coast Guard. The construction and eventual operation of the dry-dock will result in a significant economic impact for the Port of Tampa and our local economy.

ACP and TPA Renew Memorandum of Understanding

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) and the Tampa Port Authority (TPA) have signed a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to increase cooperation, such as joint marketing, between the Panama Canal and the Port of Tampa. It will also seek to bolster trade along the “All-Water Route,” the route from Asia to the U.S. Gulf Coast via the Panama Canal. The two entities first signed an MOU in 2005, which was renewed in 2008. The latest agreement is renewable for an additional five years. ·         Technological Interchange of advanced technology capabilities and programs to spur cutting-edge initiatives in the shipping and maritime community.

Ship Operator Fined $725K in Port of Tampa

Aksat Denizcilik Ve Ticaret A.S., a Turkish corporation that operated the commercial ship M/T Kerim, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Tampa, Fla., to two felony counts for knowingly failing to fully and accurately maintain an oil record book, which tracks pollutant discharge, the Justice Department announced. During the hearing, U.S. District Court Judge Richard A. Lazzara sentenced the company to pay a $725,000 fine and to serve three years of probation. Horizon lines Add Tampa Port Call

Horizon Lines, Inc., (NYSE:HRZ), announced that it will add regularly scheduled vessel container service between Tampa, Florida and Puerto Rico. A vessel call at the Port of Tampa will be added to the carrier's Gulf Express Service (GAX), currently operating a fixed-day, bi-weekly schedule between Houston, Texas and San Juan. The Tampa service is scheduled to commence with the arrival of the Horizon Discovery on October 4. The Tampa call is expected to begin contributing to the company's earnings within the first few months of service. The expanded biweekly Gulf Express port rotation will be Houston, Tampa, San Juan. The Gulf Express complements the carrier's direct U.S. east coast Puerto Rico services offered from Jacksonville (twice weekly) and Elizabeth, N.J. (once weekly).

Guilty Plea to Marine Pollution Related Charges

STX Pan Ocean Co. Ltd. (STX), headquartered in Seoul, Korea, and the owner of the commercial cargo ship, M/V Ocean Jade, pleaded guilty today to conspiracy as well as falsifying and failing to properly maintain records meant to ensure compliance with maritime pollution laws, the Justice Department announced. The chief engineer of the M/V Ocean Jade, Hong Hak Kang, a Korean citizen, also pleaded guilty today to failing to maintain environmental records and making false statements. STX, which faces five years probation for each of the four counts against it, has agreed to pay a $2m fine, as well as make a $200,000 community service payment to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

TWIC Deadline –Florida Ports

The U.S. Coast Guard urges maritime workers who have not yet applied for a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) to apply as soon as possible before unescorted access to regulated waterfront terminals in West Florida, including the ports of St. Petersburg, Tampa and Manatee, Fla., is prohibited. Beginning Jan. 13, maritime workers including terminal employees, longshoremen, truck drivers, agents and contractors must have a TWIC to gain unescorted access to secure areas of any waterfront terminal regulated by the Coast Guard under the Maritime Transportation Security Act. It can take four-to-six weeks from the time of enrollment to the time that an applicant receives their TWIC, so maritime workers need to enroll as soon as possible to meet the Jan. 13 enforcement date.
