Port Community System Unveiled at Dubai Seminar

An electronic port community system to make all trading transactions paperless in Algerian ports based on the Dubai Trade portal has been unveiled at a major seminar in Dubai on investment opportunities in the country. New York, London Juxtaposed by New Maritime Event

On November 13, the newly formed New York Maritime Consortium, a coalition of leaders from New York Maritime Inc. (NYMAR), the Society of Maritime Arbitrators (SMA), the Maritime Law Association (MLA) and the Association of Shipbrokers and Agents (ASBA), will host an event entitled “New York and London: Perception and Reality”. According to the event’s organizers, key industry figures from the areas of finance, arbitration and law from both sides of the Atlantic have been invited to illustrate the strengths of each jurisdiction, and how the two relate to each other. Chief Judge Loretta Preska of the Southern District of New York Federal Court will moderate the event. The forum will be held from 2:30-6 p.m. at The Harvard Club.

International Maritime Prize for Mexican Legal Expert

The Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) informs it decided at its recent meeting to award the International Maritime Prize for 2013 to Dr. José Eusebio Salgado y Salgado, Mexican academic and author of the Manual de Derecho Internacional Marítimo (Manual of International Maritime Law), for his significant contribution to the work and objectives of IMO. In nominating his candidature, the Government of Mexico drew attention to Dr. Salgado y Salgado’s distinguished career as an academic in international maritime law, during his 40-year tenure as a professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Technology Trap

Technology is changing all our lives, sometimes for the better. Informed people are using it more and more to get their message to the biggest target audience they can reach. In this respect it is good to see that the London Maritime Arbitrators Association, for example, is considering distributing its newsletter by email, and putting it on the LMAA website. There is a downside to technology, however. The UK P&I Club, for example, says there is increasing evidence in the US that the plaintiff bar is trolling information from the websites of club members to help target litigation against them. Websites may outline corporate aims, target audiences and areas of operation. Some specify safety committees, policy programmes, specific responsibilities and contact details.

BIMCO Approves Five New Charter Parties

BIMCO Promotes Use of Mediation with Dispute Resolution Clause

In a move designed to increase the shipping community’s awareness and use of mediation techniques in resolving disputes, BIMCO has developed a Standard Dispute Resolution Clause by incorporating a comprehensive Mediation Clause in to its widely used Standard Law and Arbitration Clause. A specialist BIMCO Working Group consisting of experts with particular expertise in maritime arbitration and mediation were responsible for the drafting work. The London Maritime Arbitrators Association (LMAA) and the Society of Maritime Arbitrators, Inc, of New York (SMA) provided valuable input and comment throughout the process. In shipping industry terms Mediation remains a relatively new dispute resolution technique, although it has gained widespread approval in other sectors.
