Intellian to Design and Supply User Terminals for Viasat Maritime

Thuraya Launches Broadband Satellite Terminal

Thuraya Telecommunications, a Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) operator, said it has further extended its maritime product portfolio with the launch of Atlas IP, a feature-rich broadband satellite terminal. Thuraya Atlas IP is the second maritime-specific product launched by Thuraya in 2014 and is designed to complement the Thuraya Orion IP broadband terminal by offering a fully-featured voice and data product with additional functionality built in. Designed and manufactured for Thuraya by Addvalue of Singapore, Thuraya Atlas IP is capable of standard IP data transfer at rates up to 444kbps and asymmetric streaming capability of 16kbps-384kbps. Thuraya Atlas IP is available with Thuraya’s range of pricing plans.

RigNet Launches iDirect Australia Network

RigNet, provider of remote communications solutions to the oil and gas industry, has installed an iDirect Series 15100 Universal Satellite Hub in Adelaide, Australia. The installation will allow RigNet to extend its services to Australia and the Asia Pacific region. The business expansion will enable RigNet to tap into growing market segments, including onshore natural gas and oil exploration, energy, mining and maritime. iDirect is a provider of satellite-based IP communications technology. Astrium Offers XChange Upgrade

Astrium Services released a new software version for its established XChange connectivity platform, which offers a range of new features to facilitate permanent remote access, allow smartphone usage on board and provide improved VoIP capabilities. Immarsat Contracts 'Global Express' Satellite Terminal Manufacturers

Inmarsat signs contracts with initial land satellite terminal manufacturing partners for its forthcoming Global Xpress® service. Cobham Satcom, Paradigm Comm and Skyware Global will manufacture 0.6 to 2.4 metre aperture terminals to deliver up to 50Mbps downlink speeds. The range will cover fixed, transportable, 'fly-away' and 'manpack' terminal types. The terminals have been specifically designed for operation in the Ka-band and will utilise a new core module developed by VT iDirect to provide state-of-the-art capabilities. Scheduled for service introduction in 2014, Global Xpress will offer unprecedented high data rate (HDR) bandwidth and global coverage.

Vizada, CLS Form Partnership for LRIT Tracking

Vizada, an independent satellite communications provider, and CLS, specializing in sustainable management of marine resources, environmental monitoring and maritime security, have signed a partnership to jointly provide long range identification and tracking (LRIT) to the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) and other Flag States including Vanuatu and Chile. Vizada Launches Mobile Satellite Service

Vizada, an independent satellite communications provider, has launched Inmarsat FleetBroadband 150, a new service for the maritime community developed to deliver voice, IP data and SMS at speeds of up to 150 kbps. Additionally, Addvalue Technologies Ltd. (“Addvalue”) has appointed Vizada as its first Tier 1 distributor partner for Addvalue’s Skipper 150 FleetBroadband terminal. With a mobile satellite terminal measuring 29 cm, the Inmarsat FleetBroadband 150 (FB150) service is designed for smaller vessels with relatively low data requirements, including fishing vessels, leisure boats and smaller merchant vessels such as tug boats.

Fupe Systems Supports SkyWave LRIT

Fupe Systems AS, a provider of satellite, radio, data, GSM and software engineering solutions, announced its agreement to support the SkyWave Mobile Communication Inc. Long Range Identification Tracking (LRIT) solution. Fupe was selected as one of test ASPs for Norway by the Norwegian Maritime Directorate. Fupe is also the test ASP for the Flag of Barbados and Sierra Leone. As a test ASP, Fupe is responsible for initial testing of ship terminals to verify their compliance with International Maritime Organization’s LRIT specifications. “By supporting the DMR-800LRIT satellite terminal, Fupe is giving ship owners greater choice in their selection of LRIT compliant equipment” said John-Harry Edvardsen, Data and Telecom Manager at Fupe. LRIT regulations came into force on January 1, 2008.

Blue Ocean, Ip.access Provide GSM Coverage

Ip.access, developer of picocell and femtocell solutions, announced that Blue Ocean Wireless, the world’s first global GSM provider for the deep sea merchant maritime sector, is using their nanoGSM system to provide mobile phone service to merchant seafarers. Blue Ocean Wireless’ global service enables seafarers to use their existing mobile phones while at sea in exactly the same way that they would in port or on land. Using the cellular signal generated by the ip.access nanoGSM picocell, crew members can use their own standard GSM phones to make and receive calls and SMS messages while on board. The nanoGSM picocell is typically installed in the accommodation areas.

SatPoint Expands Marine Offering

The Swedish based company SatPoint AB recently acquired NSABs (Nordic Satellite AB) multi service platform for data and telecommunications in the maritime business sector. SatPoint develops stabilized VSAT terminals and supplies associated services as well as offers the multi service platform DaMax (Demand Assigned Multiple Access) from the Swedish Space Corporations teleport in Stockholm. NSABs President & CEO comments: - In our recent agreement, SatPoint acquired our marine platform and has become service provider for NSABs customers in the shipping industry. Marlink Extends Crew Calling Programs

Marlink, a subsidiary of Telenor Satellite Services, announced that it is extending its "Super Quiet Time" and "Inmarsat A to Fleet" maritime communications programs offered via Telenor. Both programs, first offered in early 2003, are designed to make "at sea" satellite communications more affordable and easier for mariners. Marlink is extending its Super Quiet Time program through March 2005, offering customers substantially reduced prices for prepaid voice calls over Inmarsat-B, -M, Mini-M, GAN, Fleet and Swift services. Marlink has significantly increased the SQT calling hours in all ocean regions, including 24-hours-a-day SQT calling on Saturdays and Sundays.

Security: Ship Security Alert Systems (SSAS)

The new Ship Security and Alert Systems (SSAS) regulations were adopted by International Maritime Organization (IMO) to enhance maritime security in response to the increasing threat from terrorism and piracy. After July 1, 2004, most deep-sea passenger and cargo ships must be fitted with a device that can send an alert message containing the ship's ID and position whenever the ship is under threat or has been compromised. The distress message must be activated covertly from a switch on the navigation bridge or other shipboard location, and transmitted only to the designated authority without being received on other ships or raising an alarm on the ship under attack.

France Telecom Offers Improved SkyFile

France Telecom Mobile Satellite Communications designed new features for its free SkyFile software package, making e-mailing at sea even easier and more practical and providing seafarers with communications solutions as efficient and rapid as those used on land. SkyFile is France Telecom Mobile Satellite Communications’ proprietary software solution enabling the transfer of e-mails, faxes and SMS via Inmarsat and Iridium mobile satellite terminals. The new version compresses data sent by up to 90%, speeding up transfer times and reducing communications costs. The software also includes a SPAM filter and a black & white list option for better management of incoming e-mails.
