Globalstar Joins SIA

The Satellite Industry Association (SIA) announced that Globalstar is the latest company to join SIA. Globalstar operates a low-earth-orbit (LEO) constellation of satellites and provides mobile satellite voice and data products and service packages to government, industry and consumer customers around the world. The Company’s products include mobile and fixed satellite telephones, the Sat-Fi satellite hotspot, Simplex and Duplex satellite data modems, tracking devices plus its subsidiary SPOT LLC family of consumer satellite products. In September, Globalstar announced the appointments of Dave Kagan to the position of CEO and Jay Monroe to Executive Chairman of the Company’s Board of Directors and earlier this year the Company introduced two new products…

EU-UNODC Cooperation on Maritime Security and Surveillance

The European Union and the Global Maritime Crime Programme of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC GMCP) have a long and effective relation in building capacities to tackle maritime crimes.The EU and the Global Maritime Crime Programme of UNODC started partnering in 2010 to support Eastern African states (Kenya, Seychelles, Mauritius and Tanzania) prosecuting piracy incidents off the coast of Somalia.Currently, the EU and UNODC GMCP are jointly working on  capacity building support in Somalia, including training and mentoring of the Mogadishu Maritime Police Unit.The Global Maritime Crime Programme is currently preparing…

Key Issues of Concern to Maritime Industry

KVH Industries, Inc., hosted maritime industry leaders for a frank discussion about cyber security prior to the start of the CMA Shipping 2016 conference in Stamford, Connecticut. During the roundtable, a range of concerns about the current level of vulnerability emerged. Among the key issues identified were complacency by ship operators, lack of training for crew, non-existent contingency plans for dealing with a cyber attack, and the need for a set of best practices for minimizing risks. “We need to bring the same best practices that we expect on shore and in our corporate networks to ships,” said Rick Driscoll, KVH vice president of satellite products and services.

SpeedCast Partners to Expand Satellite Mobility Portfolio

SpeedCast International Limited has established a distributor agreement with Thuraya Telecommunications Company, a Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) operator. The new agreement brings new options for satellite mobility solutions for SpeedCast’s global customer base and expands SpeedCast’s mobility product portfolio. Under the agreement, SpeedCast will now have access to Thuraya’s portfolio of innovative mobile satellite products and services, including Thuraya SatSleeve, XT satellite phones, land and maritime broadband terminals.

Pirate-proof Communication System Launched by Beam

Beam’s new PotsDOCK Extreme Covert Piracy Solution utilizes the Iridium Extreme satellite handset and the Beam Covert Antenna system to provide a dedicated system for a safe room or citadel on board a vessel. The system ensures that essential communications on board the vessel, such as the ability to alert authorities in the event of a piracy attack, can be maintained even if all power or communication equipment has been cut off or destroyed by pirates. The system couples the Iridium Extreme handset and the Beam Extreme PotsDOCK to provide the captain and crew with access to voice communications, tracking and alert functionality from the system. In the event of an attack, an alert can be raised and the vessel can be tracked immediately.

Telenor Introduces My Source

Telenor Satellite Services, a subsidiary of Telenor of Norway launched My Source, a new online account management tool giving Telenor users more control of their satellite communications budget. The new tool offers customers of Telenor Service Providers using Telenor's satellite products and services a full range of service management capabilities. My Source enables users to manage the use of satellite terminals and phones, select prepaid plans, automatically reload prepaid cards, and accurately view current call data. My Source also features Web Dial, which allows users to set up calls to anywhere in the world via the Internet. Web Dial permits users to manage a list or group of numbers that are accessed via an Internet browser to establish individual or conference calls.

When Iridium, the $5 billion satellite company, fell into bankruptcy on March 18, 2000, it went down as one of the costliest corporate fiascoes of all time. More than one year later, Iridium is back in business, though under completely new ownership. Iridium raised a few eyebrows and a fair share of skeptics with its decision to launch its global satellite communications services. How could the new company prosper when the previous one — using the same technology had failed? Enter Gino Picasso, the company's CEO. Up front and honest, Picasso says that the new Iridium is no pipe dream.
