The Navy's first littoral combat ship (LCS), USS Freedom (LCS 1), has successfully completed another major milestone in preparation for her upcoming maiden deployment. Freedom conducted independent ship deployment training and certification at sea from Nov. 13-21, operating with ships from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) Carrier Strike Group during their Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) off the southeastern coast of the United States. Freedom conducted effective complex training as part of the Maritime Security Surge certification for the ship's Gold Crew…

Senator Warner: Tech from Dahlgren Impacts Tomorrow’s Navy

By John J. After a wide-ranging tour of Naval District Washington (NDW) West in Dahlgren, Va., Senator John W. Warner, R-Va., told reporters at a news conference last week that the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) is transforming itself to face the present and future on many fronts by producing advanced technological products that have a crucial impact in the support and protection of deployed warfighters fighting the Global War on Terrorism. “I have seen some absolutely fascinating technology in the minds of the core of civilians and military that operate here…

Submarine Force Moves Forward in IP Connectivity for Fleet

The Submarine Force achieved a major step toward FORCEnet capability July 1, with the completion of the first of three steps toward full Internet Protocol, or IP-based, communications, achieving forcewide IP connectivity. This is an important step for the Submarine Force and the fleet. “The submarine architecture is a baseline to begin this process,” said Vice Adm. James D. McArthur Jr., commander, Naval Network Warfare Command. A key concept and enabler of FORCEnet is the ability to share and exchange information quickly and easily across diverse platforms and distances. Legacy systems have enabled part of this vision but limit the type of information (usually text) and are point-to-point exchange events.

Trident Warrior ’07 Brings New Technology to the Fleet

Naval Network Warfare Command (NETWARCOM) is hosting Trident Warrior 2007, the annual FORCEnet sea trial event, from March 16 through March 30, to improve communication and speed vital information to warfighters. During the exercise, U.S. naval forces are teaming with DoD and civilian agencies to test new technologies that will improve communication and situational awareness across a multinational experiment. Military units from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and France are also taking part in Trident Warrior. Some participants are actually attending the exercise here while others are linked virtually, using the various technologies being tested in a network-centric environment.

Thoughts on Global 1,000-Ship Navy

The success of a global “1,000-ship navy” will hinge on a broader partnership with U.S. allies and trading partners and a commitment to building the Navy’s future fleet to support maritime security missions, lofty goals that may fall short in funding, several military experts said during a defense conference here, according to the Navy Times. As envisioned, the global maritime force would patrol the high seas and secure ports and waterways. The concept, developed in 2005 by Vice Adm. John G. Morgan Jr. and Rear Adm. Charles Martoglio, is getting serious review by the top brass. But its fate faces threats from tight defense budgets and ongoing debates over the Navy’s shipbuilding plans.

Trident Warrior ’05 Strengthens Navy’s Communication Capabilities

The Navy began a two-week exercise Nov. 28 with navies from Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain to improve the way it communicates between its ships, shore facilities and its coalition partners. “Trident Warrior is the Navy’s major FORCEnet experimentation venue,” stated Trident Warrior ’05 Director Cmdr. Tony Parrillo. According to Capt. Sinclair Harris, commander, Amphibious Squadron 4, FORCEnet is what ties all of the military components together. “FORCEnet is the network with which all the submarines, planes, Marines on the ground, ships at sea and coalition partners are able to transmit and receive information via e-mail or chat or links of different natures,” he stated. The Trident Warrior process takes approximately 12 months, according to Naval Network Warfare Command.
