Ørsted Breaks Ground on FlagshipONE E-Methanol Project

Ørsted broke ground on Europe’s largest e-methanol project, FlagshipONE, on May 24.FlagshipONE will start production in 2025 and will produce 50,000 tonnes of e-methanol annually. The maritime sector is a key target for the methanol. DNV: Hexicon's TwinWay Floating Wind Concept Feasible for Further Development

Energy expert and assurance provider DNV has provided Swedish floating wind tech firm Hexicon with a Statement of Feasibility for its TwinWay demonstrator which will be installed and operated at Metacenter, off the coast of Norway. Salt Ship Design Acquires Albatross

Norwegian-headquartered Salt Ship Design said it has completed its acquisition of Serbian naval architecture firm Albatross Ship Design.Albatross was founded in 2001 as a member of Norway's Vik Sandvik Group, working under name Vik Sandvik Albatross until it was acquired by Finnish technology company Wärtsilä and renamed Wärtsilä Ship Design Serbia in 2009. It became a private independent company with the new name Albatross Ship Design in 2016.Salt Ship Design, which specializes in the design of offshore and fishing vessels, said it has previously worked with Albatross Ship Design on various aspects of many vessel projects.Salt now adds 20 employees through the integration of Albatross.

DNV GL Approves IBM’s Maximo Software for Maritime and Offshore Sectors

Quality assurance and certification firm DNV GL granted type approval for IBM’s Maximo Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) software, a tool that helps ship owners maintain their vessels in accordance with international regulations.The certification process for Maximo version 7.x was overseen by Manchester-based maritime and offshore specialist IT firm SRO Solutions, part of the Cohesive Companies."Shipowners are legally required to implement a Planned Maintenance System (PMS) to ensure their vessels are operated and maintained in accordance with class and manufacturer requirements.

Sævik Named Managing Director of New Havyard Ship Technology

Karsten Sævik has been named managing director of the New Havyard Ship Technology AS (NHST) shipyard in Leirvik, Norway, replacing outgoing managing director, Erlend Hatleberg, who has chosen to seek new opportunities outside the Havyard Group, the company announced Tuesday.Sævik brings to the role high-level experience in vessel construction and operations, having previously held roles as VP of projects and newbuilding at Odfjell ASA, CEO at Remøy Shipping and CEO at Ulstein Verft.The new managing director joins NHTS at a time of transition following last year's bankruptcy.

"World First": Remote In-water Ship Surveys via ROV

As COVID-19 continues to challenge many business plans and practices, the advent of remote inspection techniques is growing in popularity. What is reported to be the world’s first in-water remote ship surveys using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) have been completed by DNV GL.In-water bottom surveys using ROVs have now been carried out on three separate Wilson ASA-managed vessels with the first having been completed on the Wilson Fedje in December 2019 by a surveyor from Høvik. The survey was performed earlier in July on another ASA Wilson-managed vessel in Bergen, Norway.

DSME, DNV GL Pact for Joint Projects

South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and DNV GL have signed a framework agreement which will see them cooperate on joint development projects (JDPs) for future technologies in the shipbuilding and offshore plant industries.The Norway-headquartered classification society said in a release that the agreement was signed by DSME President & CEO Sung-Geun Lee and DNV GL Group President & CEO Remi Eriksen at the DNV GL headquarters in Høvik.“Through the JDPs with DNV GL, we aim to develop new technologies to meet the needs of our clients and further provide the direction in the shipbuilding and offshore industries,” said Sung-Geun Lee.

Ponant Adds Newest Cruise Ship

French cruise company Ponant has received its new cruise ship, Le Bougainville, bringing its fleet to eight vessels.The ship, which is the third in the Ponant Explorers series, left Søvik in Norway on the morning of 8 April and she is currently sailing to Spain to start her maiden cruise on 15 April from Malaga.Le Bougainville will be officially inaugurated on 4 June.“A dream, firm beliefs, energy and boldness were what created Ponant. Cruise Ship Reaches Port after Casualty, Rescues

A luxury cruise ship that had set sail with almost 1,400 passengers and crew aboard arrived at a port in Norway on Sunday after narrowly escaping disaster when its engines failed during a storm.The Viking Sky sent out a mayday signal on Saturday as it drifted in rough waters in the Norwegian Sea to within 100 metres of land.Rescue services airlifted 479 people, hoisting them one-by- one on to helicopters, before the weather subsided on Sunday and a tow could begin. Many of them were senior citizens.A total of 1,373 people had started the voyage and about 900 people were still on board as the ship arrived at the port of Molde on Norway's west coast."It was very nearly a disaster.

DNV GL Rolls Out Remote Surveys

Classification society DNV GL has announced that all DNV GL classed vessels are now able to utilize the possibility of remote surveys for some inspections through the Veracity data platform. This means that for a range of surveys, a DNV GL surveyor will not be required to travel to the vessel. Instead, by using an online connection or video streaming link, a dedicated team of remote surveyors can provide support to vessels anywhere in the world with documentation, images, video (streaming or recordings), and input provided by the customer and crew.

Lundin Norway Awards EPCI Contract to WorleyParsons

Klas Bendrik will join DNV GL September 1 as Chief Digital Transformation Officer to support DNV GL’s digitalization and IT strategy. USCG's Polar Icebreaker Program Prepares for EIS

Østensjø Rederi’s three new escort towing vessels were officially named on August 26 in Hammerfest. Sponsors of the trio were Unni M. S. Fjær, Inger Vik Framnes and Siv Halvorsen officially naming the vessels Dux, Pax and Audax. In attendance on behalf of designers Robert Allan Ltd. was Rob Allan, Executive Chairman of the Board, on behalf of Østensjø were Chairman of the Board Johannes Østensjø, Chief Executive Officer Kenneth Walland, and Project manager Carl-Johan Amundsen.
