Norwegian ship designed and builder Vard has secured a contract from I.T. International Telecom Marine (IT) to convert its platform supply vessel (PSV) IT Infinity into a cable laying vessel (CLV).The PSV was built at Vard Brattvaag and delivered to Volstad Maritime in 2008 under the name Volstad Princess.SD Standard Drilling acquired the vessel in 2017 before it was sold to IT in 2021 and was renamed IT Infinity.The work will be carried out by Vard Brattvaag in Norway and the vessel will be delivered in the third quarter of 2024…

Wilhelm Wilhelmsen, the fourth-generation owner of the maritime industry group Wilhelmsen group, died on February 22 at the age of 82.Wilhelmsen, born June 8, 1937, was a very well-respected business leader and spokesperson for Norwegian shipping and the maritime industry at large. Wilhelmsen group was established by his great grandfather in Tønsberg, Norway in 1861.Wilhelm Wilhelmsen said it was instrumental in developing the Wilhelmsen group from a traditional liner company with trades all over the world to one of the largest maritime industry groups with almost 15 000 employees in more than 70 countries."His extensive network and business relationships in Norway and internationally have been essential in building the company the past almost 60 years…

MV Wilhelm Gustloff was launched in 1937 as a German passenger vessel. Initially used for cruises in the Baltic, it was briefly converted to a hospital ship at the start of World War II and then used as a barracks ship in German-occupied Gdynia. With the Russian assault in early 1945, the ship was designated to evacuate troops, auxiliaries, and civilians back to Germany. It departed Gdynia early on the morning of 30 January 1945 with an estimated 10,000 persons onboard, including 5,000 children. Fearing a collision with a supposed Germany naval convoy that night, the master activated the ship’s navigation lights. The lights were observed by a Russian submarine, which fired three torpedoes. All hit their mark and the ship sank quickly, with only a few hundred survivors.

Norwegian shipping company GC Rieber Shipping said that Christian Wilhelm Berg resigned the position as CEO with effect from 14 September 2018 in order to pursue other opportunities through his wholly owned company, Bech Offshore.Bech Offshore was set up in 2017 with the concept to initiate investment opportunities related to distressed assets within the Offshore Support Segment. Further, the company offered third party owners Commercial Management, Consultancy Services and in-depth market know-how.The activities of Bech Offshore was acquired by and integrated into GC Rieber Shipping when Christian Wilhelm Berg commenced as CEO, but will now be sold back to Bech Offshore.The Board of GC Rieber Shipping will initiate a process to recruit a new permanent CEO.

One hundred years ago tomorrow (January 4) the sinking of a hospital ship by an infamous German U-boat commander caused outrage across Britain. Wilhelm Werner broke international law when he fired on HMHS Rewa, killing four seafarers and causing the vessel to sink into the Bristol Channel, 19 miles off Hartland Point. The Rewa - which had served in the Gallipoli campaign - was transporting walking wounded from Malta to Wales when it was torpedoed. The ship took two hours to sink, which gave those on board time to get into lifeboats. The survivors arrived in Swansea, where they received support from international maritime charity the British and Foreign Sailors’ Society. Reverend R.G.

About 77 pct of Songa shareholders have so far accepted deal. Transocean, one of the world's biggest drilling rig operators, has agreed a deal to buy Norwegian competitor Songa Offshore for 9.1 billion Norwegian crowns ($1.1 bln), the two companies said on Tuesday. The deal, which would be mostly paid for in shares and convertible bonds, would strengthen Transocean's position in offshore drilling as Songa is Norwegian oil major Statoil's largest drilling service provider. The offer values Songa shares at 47.50 Norwegian crowns each, a 39.7 percent premium over Monday's closing price. Shares in Songa surged 31 percent on news of the deal, which needs the backing of at least 90 percent of Songa shareholders. So far about 77 percent of shareholders have agreed to the offer, the company said.

It is a tram or a train? Neither, it's a boat. Pleasure craft using Poland's Elblag Canal can appear to be seen as sailing through grassy plains as they follow tracks on land in an unusual solution for dealing with elevation on the waterway. The canal, approximately 240km (150 miles) north of Warsaw, uses a system of five inclined planes between its lakes, which are too steep to be navigated using locks. Rail tracks run carriages to transport the boats. The difference in elevation between the lowest and highest level is almost 100 metres (330 feet).

The newly built wind farm service vessel Windea Leibniz was delivered from Ulstein Verft to Bernhard Schulte Offshore and ICBC Leasing on February 28, and named March 2 at a ceremony in Ulsteinvik, Norway. Beginning in April, the vessel will work at the Sandbank wind farm in the German Bight for Siemens Wind Power Service to help ensure energy production from the site’s 72 wind turbines. An agreement between ZF Friedrichshafen AG and Rolls-Royce Power Systems will see the two companies collaborate even more closely on the development, marketing, sales and service of marine propulsion systems. The combination of MTU engines from Rolls-Royce Power Systems and marine transmissions from ZF have long been a match for many commercial ships and yachts. Now, the two companies plan to work together even more intensively to develop new technologies and products to help ensure clients are provided with fully optimized propulsion solutions.

The Wind Propulsion Innovation Awards were created by the International Windship Association (IWSA) to honor the pioneers of technological innovation in wind propulsion striving to support the shipping industry to decarbonizes whilst maintaining commercial and operational performance. The IWSA Awards sought to spotlight both individuals and companies making a significant difference in advancing wind propulsion in the maritime sector. In July some 40 nominations were received at IWSA headquarters. These were assessed and shortlisted by a panel of experts drawn from across the shipping sector.

DNV GL adds to its service offering  offers in the field of electrical measurement for renewable energy producers with a mobile test laboratory for carrying out “Over Voltage Ride Through” (OVRT) tests. The first measurements have now been successfully started for a major German wind turbine manufacturer at the North German wind turbine test facility Janneby. Further projects have already been commissioned by some well-known turbine manufacturers. The test unit is designed for use in the medium voltage grid, implementing the topology suggested in the relevant standards. In Germany the latest regulations specify that all local energy suppliers must comply with the Over Voltage Ride Through requirements.

Following the go-ahead from antitrust authorities, on December 1, 2015 ZF has officially taken over the industrial gears and wind turbine gearbox business from Bosch Rexroth AG. With this, some 1,200 employees altogether at the Witten, Beijing and Lake Zurich (USA) locations will thus join the technology company. The purchase price has not been disclosed. For ZF, the acquisition is an entry into the business with large industrial gears that are used in oil rigs, mine vehicles, tunnel drilling machines, or cableways, for instance.

Eleven container vessels owned by Bernhard Schulte GmbH & Co. KG, based in Germany, are to be retrofitted with Wärtsilä Aquarius Ballast Water Management Systems (BWMS). This is one of the largest single retrofit contracts thus far issued for BWMS solutions. The contract was signed in July. "This significant order is a clear indication that the major ship owners are actively securing procurement for quality BWMS in anticipation of ratification of the IMO's ballast water treaty. Wärtsilä has both experience and deep know-how in this field, and can offer reliability and long term support to ensure that customers have the optimal solution for their specific needs.

Sweden has given a long-awaited green light to the planned procurement of two new-generation A26 submarines from Saab Kockums. Sweden's official announcement ordering two new submarines to boost its armed forces, months after a futile hunt for a suspected Russian mini-sub in the Stockholm archipelago. A statement released by the defence minister's office on 19 March said that the A26 order will secure Sweden's submarine capability beyond 2030. The subs are also set to be delivered by 2022 at the latest. "The order... will ensure Sweden's underwater capacity beyond 2030," Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist said in a statement. "Underwater capacity is a central part of Sweden's defence in peace time, as well as during emergencies and war," the ministry added.

Eleven container vessels owned by Bernhard Schulte GmbH & Co. KG, based in Germany, are to be retrofitted with Wärtsilä Aquarius Ballast Water Management Systems (BWMS), Wärtsilä announced today. The 11 containerships to be retrofitted range in size from 2,600 to 5,600 TEU and are managed by affiliate Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement through offices in Greece, Hong Kong, India and Singapore. The 6th of February 2010 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Karl Maybach, founder, director, partner and for many years technical mastermind behind what is today MTU Friedrichshafen, the core company of the Tognum Group. He died on Feb. 6 1960 in Friedrichshafen. Karl Maybach was born on July 6 1879 in Cologne-Deutz. On March 23, 1909, he founded, along with his father Wilhelm and Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, Luftfahrzeug-Motorenbau GmbH, from which the company MTU Friedrichshafen originates. Maybach remained a partner throughout his life and was managing director until 1952.
