EPA: MTU Must Audit Emissions Testing

MTU America Inc., a subsidiary of Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG, will implement an auditing program to ensure proper emissions testing and compliance with federal emission standards for its heavy-duty diesel non-road engines as part of a settlement to resolve alleged Clean Air Act violations, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Justice and announced today. The complaint filed with the settlement alleges that MTU violated the Clean Air Act by selling 895 non-road, heavy-duty diesel engines, which are used in mining, marine and power generation vehicles and equipment, without valid certificates of conformity. EPA voided the certificates of conformity purporting to cover the engines based on improper emissions testing by MTU employees.

Rolls-Royce Acquires Power Systems Unit

Rolls-Royce today announced the completion of its acquisition of Rolls-Royce Power Systems (RRPS). The move follows an announcement made on March 7, 2014 that the Board of Management of Daimler AG had decided to exercise the put option relating to its 50% equity interest in RRPS and the announcement on April 16, 2014 that Rolls-Royce and Daimler had agreed on a fair market valuation for the shareholding of €2.43 billion. Tognum Now under Rolls-Royce Power Systems Name

Effective immediately, the former Tognum AG will now operate under the name of Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG.

Effective immediately, the former Tognum AG will now operate under the name of Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG. Since March 2013, the specialist for large engines, propulsion systems and distributed energy systems has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rolls-Royce plc and Daimler AG, each of which has a 50% shareholding in the company via a joint venture. The group of companies with MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH as the core company has been consolidated in the Rolls-Royce Group’s results since the beginning of 2013.

Tognum America changes name to MTU America Inc.

Name change aligns corporate name with primary product brands MTU and MTU Onsite Energy; German holding company Tognum AG renamed Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG. Effective immediately, Tognum America Inc. has changed its name to MTU America Inc. Based in Novi, Mich., the company is responsible for the manufacture, development, sales and service of MTU engines, propulsion and drive systems and MTU Onsite Energy distributed energy systems in North and Latin America. The company also maintains manufacturing facilities in Aiken, S.C. and Mankato, Minn.

Knudsen Named Pesident, Rolls-Royce Offshore

Rolls-Royce has appointed John Knudsen as President - Offshore, in its Marine business. Knudsen will transition into his new role through January 2014. Mr. Knudsen is currently President of Bergen Engines AS. He has had a key role in transforming Bergen Engines during the divestment from Rolls-Royce Marine and integrating it into the Tognum Group. Tognum AG is a joint venture of Rolls-Royce and Daimler. John Knudsen joined Rolls-Royce in 2007 and has previously held senior positions in the Norwegian telecom equipment supplier Nera ASA.

Tognum's new enlarged Asia-Pacific headquarters in Singapore will consolidate the areas of application engineering, sales and service support, distribution management, marketing and communications under one roof, bringing together all business functions and over 300 staff members into one new facility. In 1974, MTU, a Tognum brand, chose Singapore to be its home in Asia and since this time, the country has become an intrinsic part of Tognum’s regional corporate DNA. Boustead Projects Pte Ltd will be in charge of construction, and upon completion, will lease back the premises to Tognum Asia.

MTU Diesel Engines to Power Singapore’s New Naval Fleet

Tognum announced that its MTU Series 4000 diesel engines have been chosen by Singapore Technologies Marine Ltd. to power eight Littoral Mission Vessels for the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN). The Littoral Mission Vessels will be installed with state of the art, high efficiency MTU 20V 4000 M93L diesel engines, known for their low consumption and long service life, with each unit producing 4300kW (5766bhp), Tognum said. MTU Series 4000 diesel engines offer unrivalled power density in terms of volume-to power ratio and power-to-weight ratio.

MTU Showcases Commercial Vessel Propulsion at Europort

The MTU Series 4000 long-stroke Ironmen engine is available with 8, 12 and 16 cylinders and covers power outputs from 700-2,240kW (940-3,000bhp). It is used in workboats, tugs, inland waterway vessels, ferries, and governmental vessels. The engine is currently being developed for compliance with US emission-stage EPA Tier 3 regulations, with outputs from 560-2,000kW (750-2,680bhp). EPA Tier 3 requirements will be met without the need for exhaust aftertreatment.

Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen will be presenting its range of products for commercial marine applications at the Europort Maritime Exhibition in Rotterdam (Hall 1, Stand 1425) from November 5-8. In its role as a systems partner, MTU supplies complete propulsion packages incorporating MTU engines as well as partial systems such as couplings, gearboxes, on-board power gensets and integrated ship automation systems. The company´s portfolio is rounded off by a program of customer-specific service solutions.

Rolls-Royce Gas Turbine for Combat Ship

Rolls-Royce won a contract to design the gas turbine system for the U.K. Royal Navy’s future Type 26 Global Combat Ship, which will, subject to contract, feature the marine gas turbine Rolls-Royce MT30. Rolls-Royce will work with prime contractor BAE Systems and Tognum, Rolls-Royce’s collaboration with Daimler, to design the propulsion system. This system will combine the Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine with four of Tognum’s MTU high-speed diesel generator sets. The MT30 is derived from Rolls-Royce aero engine technology. It produces  36-40 MW.

The MTU Series 8000 was awarded Naval Vessel Rules (NVR) certification by ABS. The new certification, a requirement for the U.S. Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) and Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) programs, was awarded to Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH after 1,500 hours of testing of the 20V 8000 that included run times at 110% of the engine’s rated power in a variety of extreme environmental conditions. Korean Coast Guard Chooses MTU Propulsion

MTU has been chosen by the Korean Coast Guard (KCG) to provide propulsion and onboard power for a new class of patrol vessels in its ever expanding and modernizing fleet. The new 5,000-ton displacement patrol vessel will be powered by four MTU 20V1163M94 engines in a Combined Diesel and Diesel (CODAD) propulsion configuration, with onboard power provided by four 12V4000M23S gensets. Irmgard Schmid-Maybach celebrates her 90th birthday: she is the daughter and one of the heirs of Karl Maybach, Irmgard Schmid-Maybach and was a Supervisory Board member of Tognum’s core company, MTU Friedrichshafen, between 1984 and 2005. Later she was elected as an honorary lifetime member in acknowledgement of her commitment and contribution to the company. Irmgard Schmid-Maybach was born in 1923 in Friedrichshafen and was the fourth of five children of Käthe and Karl Maybach. Her father was the company founder, head and shareholder of Maybach-Motorenbau, the MTU predecessor company.

Grant from the MTU Environmental Foundation to promote the environmental protection of Lake Constance; Environmental protection a major corporate mission of the Tognum Group. For the fourth time, the MTU Environmental Foundation is inviting tenders for a grant of 20,000 euros for environmental protection projects on Lake Constance. MTU Diesel Gensets for Type 26 British Combat Ship

Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH and Rolls-Royce have jointly been awarded the contract to design the diesel generator sets for the Royal Navy´s future Type 26 Global Combat Ship. BAE Systems made the announcement at the International Defense and Security Equipment exhibition (DSEi) in London. The propulsion system will consist of a combination of four MTU diesel gensets powered by Type 20V 4000 M53B engines, and a Rolls-Royce Type MT30 gas turbine. Combined propulsion systems utilizing diesel engines and gas turbines are increasingly gaining in significance in the naval sector. The future Type 26 Global Combat Ship will employ a CODLOG (Combined Diesel Electric or Gas Turbine) configuration.

MTU Reman Builds on 175 Year Magdeburg Tradition

The name ‘MTU Reman Technologies’ might be new in the city of Magdeburg, Germany, but behind the Tognum subsidiary that remanufactures large diesel engines lies 175 years of industrial history. Dr. Ulrich Dohle New Head of Tognum

As announced in April, Dr Ulrich Dohle today takes up his new duties as Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Tognum AG. He succeeds Joachim Coers, who has left the company after nine years at his own request. In his new role, Dr Dohle will not only take on the typical duties of a CEO, such as corporate communication and strategy, but will also be responsible for R&D and quality management. In April, the Supervisory Board extended Dr Dohle's contract until December 31, 2015. He has been on the Executive Board of Tognum AG since 2009, previously holding the position of deputy CEO and CTO. One priority of the Executive Board's work will be to expand operations worldwide. At the same time, cooperation with Rolls-Royce and Daimler is to be intensified.

Tognum Honors Best Suppliers

Tognum, the propulsion and energy system specialist, has honored its best suppliers for the year 2012 with the Supplier Award in five categories. Jörg Schwitalla, member of the Board of Management responsible for personnel, integrity and operations, and Erik Manning, Head of Purchasing, handed over the awards. For the first time, Tognum presented the Supplier Award to two suppliers from the U.S. The prize in the category of "Most Improved for the Year" was awarded to the American supplier Honeywell International from Torrance in California. The Tognum Group buys turbochargers from them.

Tognum's Investment In the Future Kicks In

150 young people are embarking on training programs or courses of dual study at Tognum, and for the first time, these include trainees from the new Tognum location in Bergen, Norway. “Our new trainees represent an investment in the future of our company and the places we have on offer provide very attractive opportunities for those just starting out on their careers,” said Ingo Metzer, head of HR at Tognum. A total of 108 young people are starting courses at Tognum HQ in Friedrichshafen with 75 young men and 33 young women undertaking training in eleven vocational areas.
