Maritime museums, such as GulfQuest National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico, are here to introduce to some (and reinforce to others) the continued importance of maritime history and the cultural and economic impact the industry has on a global scale. By doing so, more and more millennials are discovering jobs outside of Silicon Valley, ones that do not require sitting behind a desk all day; jobs that enable you to travel the globe, experience other cultures and have a significant and visible impact on the global economy.

Harrison to Retire from International Shipholding

nternational Shipholding Corporation has announced the retirement of William H. Harrison, a veteran of 44 years with Waterman Steamship Corporation and its affiliates, effective June 30, 2008. Nicolas Walker will assume the duties of in his new capacity as director of compliance for LMS Shipmangement, Inc. During his tenure with the company, Harrison held positions as port engineer, construction representative, district superintendent in , marine superintendent, fleet manager, vice president and senior vice president.

"Tonnage Tax" Provision Included in Tax Bill

Today, Congressman William J. Jefferson announced that his proposed "tonnage tax" provision and three other provisions that will benefit Louisiana were included in the final version of a corporate tax bill that the House approved today. The U.S. House of Representatives approved the final conference report of the House and Senate bills designed to adjust corporate taxes. The "tonnage tax" provision is touted as benefitting United States-flag vessel owners such as Central Gulf Lines, Inc., Waterman Steamship Corporation, and other American maritime companies headquartered in New Orleans, Louisiana, engaging in international trade by preserving and enhancing maritime employment opportunities for United States seafarers from Louisiana and elsewhere around the country.
